Why are faces with 5 or more sides discouraged?

Do 5+ sided faces disturb the function of realtime applications? Or is it related to their display in render / realtime? Or, just a matter of good form when it comes to edge loops, reduce, and smooth?

I've been working with Maya for 6 months and avoiding the n-gons but without a founded reason for doing so -- I've just heard to avoid them.

well it totally depends on what your modeling, if your modeling a car or building, then of course it wont matter having n-gons, but if you modeling organic things, when you subdivide you will get horrible results, also if your object needs to be animated it wont be able to deform as well as an all quad mesh.

furthermore at least in Cinema 4d n-gons look worse than 4 sided polys in a hypernurbs
