It's a bit misleading, but by 'polys', they're referring to the actual triangle count.

Yes, practically all game engines take the triangle count of objects. And yes, this is annoying for those who make a model and are all excited "YAY..it's only 3000 polys!....trangulate...AHHHH!!!!" hehe. But yes, all models have to be triagulated, it is how the computer draws them.
