this is my latest painting that I started today:

It's still at the thumbnail scetch level, but I wanted to hear your opinion before continuing. Is the composition working? Any ideas how to improve this?

There are two references used:

Stock1 (http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/38537580/)
Stock2 (http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/14925392/)

The girl is a manipulated photo element atm, but I will paint her also when starting to do the larger resolution painting. Is the picture too much like the references used? I mean, is this original enough, or does this rely too much on the refences?

Maybe you could look at altering the composition so that she's not entirely in the centre of the piece?

Too much photo ref? Dunno, just make sure you are not bound by it.

Ok, adjusted the composition and merged a photo to the background. I know the level of detail of background is too much compared to the foreground, but I'm just testing the general composition here. Maybe I should get rid of the window and add a fountain there?

Yeah! the idea of the fountain sounds good, but you should focus the girl, and try to blur a little the front, and the background, it is my opinion, and the composition is pretty good. keep the hard work.

Added the fountain and a bit more atmospheric haze to the background.

This is a beautiful start! The composition is just spot on, in my opinion :)

As I was watching it progress, there's been one thing that's bothering me. And I wasn't too sure what it was, at first I thought it was the addition of the mountain, but i don't think that's it as I feel now it adds to that lovely desert feel you've got going on with the building. (GORGEOUS fountain, by the way!) I think it's the girl. The whole ballgown thing isn't doing it for me. (That's personal preference though, so if you like it, stick with it! ;) ) Don't get me wrong, I LOVE beautiful dresses, but I think, with the whole desert feel, maybe more of a beautiful Spanish type costume would be in order?

Of course that's just personal preference, but I think that would pull the piece together *beautifully*. Like, maybe make her a beautiful Spanish senorita?

Like something along those lines? Either way, it's a beautiful piece so far and I'm sure whatever you choose will look gorgeous! :D

Noctourne, you are absolutely right! Something was bothering me also, and you just identified what it was. I have to start browsing through my reference library once again :). Thanks for the help!

You're very welcome!! :D I am so glad I could help! I just couldn't help but put my two cents in, the piece has such potential to be *gooorgeeouss* and I feel a lovely Spanish senorita would pull that all together!! :D I cannot WAIT to see what you come up with! ;)

Decided to continue this after a long pause. Still some foliage and the foreground roots to do.
