View Full Version : HARDCORE MODELING: Ray Harryhausen Tribute: Cephalapod - Diorama

Hey there everyone, good to be on board. This is my first modeling challenge I have participated in so I think Im going to do the Cephalapod. I started a mesh in Maya last night but didn't get a chance to post it before I hit the hay. Ill be working on it tonight and post an update when later on. Hoping to sharpen up my ZBrush skills a bit and give myself a challenge, everyone's stuff looks great so far! This should be fun!

Ok here's my base mesh from maya, just got all the UV's laid out so its time to work a little zbrush magic!

Well i got it into zbrush tonight for a little while and here is what i ended up with, i still have a lot to add but wanted to post what i have to see if anyone has any comments or suggestions. Im still learning the ropes of zbrush so bear with me, but i think im picking it up fairly quickly, hope you all enjoy!

Looking good. Are you going to be rigging it to pose it when you're finished with your ZBrush pass?

Thanks man, yeah definitely be rigging it, im still not too sure what kind of pose i want him in so i figured i would get started anyways and just drop a quick rig in him later,

I can really feel the Harryhausen in your work allready :)
Not too familiar with this creature though but it looks really good.

Are you planning on texturing aswell?

ide love to texture it, im just hoping i can get it finished right now, my work just gave me a swift kick in the butt this past week so i havent been able to touch it, i have tomorrow off so hopefully i can post another update asap.
MatsM - Thanks for the compliment, Ive used zbrush before for about the past two years, but before this it was a total of probably three times and it was kind of messing with the basics. I have a buddy who lent me his digital tutors zbrush dvd, so i checked that out and it really cleared things up for me!

Ok finally an update! got some spare time tonight so i started a little bit of texturing, still havent finished the textures yet but i got a little ancy to kick off a render or two. I have a couple problems with some stretching and i think im going to up the res of my displacement and bump maps because i can see some nasty pixels, i should be posting another update on wednesday. The first is just standard 3 point lights, mental ray draft. The second is 3point lights with an ibl with a gray texture, and the third close up is the same light setup but with an hdri image, just messing around seeing what it looked like with the different lighting.

Hey really cool work nmcelmury, dont know how this one sneaked under my radar! Nice zbrush detailing and texture. Do you plan on dropping him into some kind of scene or jsut doing the model? You might be able to get some really nice SSS effects on ths creature, and a good excuse to have a play with it if you havent before.

Hey thanks Cameo, I'm planning on putting him into a scene, maybe coming out of some underwater cave or something, still not quite sure. I have worked with SSS before and I think Im definitely going to apply it to this guy, my computer doesnt seem to like to render it in a timely fashion, but regardless Im going to use it to see how real i can get this guy to look, it can only help! :thumbsup:

Looking really nice, looks like I need to invest in zBrush (when I get better). Can't wait to see it in a scene. FYI: I have added some photos of the real model in the reference thread.

great textures! cant wait to see it finished. Just curious, did u paint them in zbrush or photoshop?

Hey guys thanks a lot for the feedback
anim_ziggy - yeah i textured him in zbrush, minus his spec map which was a modified version of the original displacement i exported from zbrush, that also still needs a lot of work. i still have a lot of work left to do on him, his entire underside is still bare and i have some issues i want to clean up in photoshop where it got a little sloppy

Next onto his shell and the environment!!

Really nice job. Love the zbrush detailing and paint job.
