Yeah, I finally decided to enter this comp with our Japanese cosmic hero Ultraman (

I originally wanted to do Ultraman Powered, but I could barely find any reference images for him, so I decided to go with the original Ultraman. Even got some nice references already:

Ultraman! Excellent choice. I remember seeing some episodes when I was a kid, I believe it was back-to-back with Shogun Warriors. I was really suprised to see that Ultraman was brought back to life and being shown here in the states. Maybe they'll bring back Shogun Warrior as well (yeah, right).

Wow, I haven't thought about Ultraman since I was a kid in the early 70's. I wish they would bring back reruns. Nice link.

Along with some images I also found the theme song - which totally owns...

Can't beat that hilarious feeling modeling him with that song in background. Just have to grin like an idiot...

About 1 hour work, still struggling with the shoulder (as if I wouldn't be doing this for the x-th time... arrgh! where's my practice gone?)

Last update for today:

btw - I'm aware that the model seems a bit fat in comparison to the posted reference doll, but sometimes he looks a bit differently in the show, so...

Still WIP anyway. There's always more tweaking possible.

1886 triangles. I could get away with less, but as you can see, with those details modeled out, I still have plenty left.

Looking at him, I think I'll make the eyes rounder, then start UVing.

I like it, but your proportions seem to be somewhat off. From what I can tell, the arms and legs should be alot longer, also the head should be 1/8 of the person's height. Well, naturally it'll be a tad more with the helmet and all, but I still think the head's a little too large...

As it is now, he looks sorta like a little kid. Keep up the good work though, can't wait to see this model finished and textured. :thumbsup:

I like it! its got a nice sylized look that a game would benefit from.. my comment is that i agree the head is just a wee bit too big. its supposed to be big i know (not 1/8 in my oppinion but 1/6..) youve got it at 1/5 which makes him look a little too dumpy. imo

fix the proportion with lattice. now the legs are too short, chest is too long.

Thanks :D But the texture will be simply Ultraman and could not rock more or less than the original design...

I try to find some time for him, but we still have a month to go, so I'm not to hasty with this...

Guess what. I'm still at it :D

After Metroid Prime and some major changes in my home office (now it deserves to be called one), I finally managed to continue working on him.

Here's the UV

Now comes the fun part - but using my tiny old Wacom ArtPad at home, it's actually not as much fun as I have usually at the office...

BTW, I'm reworking my Guan-Di Character (another reason why Ultraman wasn't updated till now). But after I re-did the rig, I realized that also the textures have to be improved...

Here's another WIP, the texture is about 50% done. He actually doesn't need that much texturing anyway - in addition to the trademark coloring pattern, that is...

Don't know if I'd make it in time. So if anyone feels like hyping, go ahead and pump me up :D

P.S. My old tiny wacom does suck.

man thats awesome! lots of strong entrys, I feel for the judges :)

and I think your worrying too much.. you could enter him as is and he would be a strong entry.

hows this coming.. I want to see the other 50% of the textures :p haha.. you best be submitting him tonight/early tomorrow though!! really strong piece that will surely be excellent competition.

I wasn't able to work on him over the weekend, but will be this evening. Hopefully I'll make it in time... (once again: my tiny old Wacom sucks)
