Hey folks, first time doing one of these hard core model challenges but i couldn't resist. Ray Harryhausen has been one of my major inspirations growing up and i had to do this comp. so i put aside some time to do some good old fashion ZBrushing. anyways, still early WIP so any crits would be greatly appreciated. anyways, cya!

Great Start typhus22 :applause:
The structure of the face looks good ( under the skin stuff )
I would maybe think about putting a hole were the nose it it looks
like it has no way to breath maybe make the tonge seperate too
and allow the mouth to go dow the throat.

But that might just be cause youve just started :D

Keep it up want too see more!

Yea great choice of creature mate, with the added bonus of being able to reuse a master version of one serpent

Looking forward to seeing your progress

hey guys thanks for the crits and support! ive put on a test texture and added nostrils. i also made the throat deeper and a little space on the bottom jaw so i can rig the tongue so it can slide down. anyways, heres my update:

what u guys think? cya ^_^

Very nice start typhus. I presume you will be colouring the tongue and inside of the mouth as per the photograph? It's hard to tell without seeing the head with its mouth closed but the top front part of the mouth or 'beak' might need squaring off more to make it more like a right-angle like in the photos? What do you think?

man i just did a paint over and im gonna have to do some major changes so expect a new render sometime this weekend. and yes Cameo i agree with u 100%. thanks for the crit mate! and yeah ill be painting inside the mouth soon, just a test texture right now to get the feel right. i think i might have to add shades of green, not sure yet. ^_^

hey, just fixing the geometry amd mow its defintely more reptile. havent changed the texture yet. anyways, what yall think. cya!

ok heres a quick update. cc greatly appreciated. cya!:

Fantastic progress typhus, youre working really fast.

I would vary the actual heights of the heads as per the photograph, that will add a lot to it. Also perhaps add a little bit more blue into the purple skin areas and desaturate the colour a bit. I also think the belly would benefit from an orange tint in parts, again like the photo.

wow, nice detail and textures - I tried to get you a photo, but that model was just too dark and hard to get to.

Just wanted to say how nice yours is coming along. It's cool to see how you're balancing geting the "miniature" look with your 3D model.

It looks like it would make a great game model. I'm sure why you're using normal maps rather than displacements though, because I think it's losing a lot of the detail that's in the original.

02 February 2007, 12:15 AM
i think it was my render settings. i might boot out a displacement map and see how that goes. i had a friend help me out with some test renders since im still learning. anywaays, heres the update:

Man, that is lookin' fine. Although I think that Harryhausen's model only had five heads....

02 February 2007, 03:42 PM
oh nice, i like oddity's right about using disp maps not normals, but then with that many poly's it may not be possible, i know i always struggle with memory

=magillaIncorrect. The original Hydra in the film had seven heads, so this model is correct. I'm having a bronze model made of this fantasitc creature and you can count the heads quite easily in the shot of the waxes waiting to be cast :)

Heh sweet model Qexit, how did you go about getting that done?

This thread would not be the right place to answer your question. I only posted the images as I thought they might be useful to typhus22. However, full details can be found here:

Please PM me if you want to know more. BTW, I'm just down the road from you in Warrington :)
