I guess... they modeled... textured... and rendered it... :p
Seriously, the subtle reflections on the car looks like a HDR map and the background... looks like compositing...

The guy posted that car on this forum too..

Check the Gallery here on CGtalk.
He explains how it was done (the BG is modeled and rendered aswell, if i understood the guy right...)

hmm... something tells me you were talking about my image... ;)
Yepp, everything in the scene was modelled.
It was lit with an HDRI map and one area light.
How it was done?
The same way as any other image. ;)
You just need a lot of patience. As it was a personal project I didn't have any time restraints so I could take my own time to work on it as much (or as little) as I liked.

it is definitely the most realistic car i've ever seen:drool:
how long did it take?
02 February 2003, 11:44 AM
thanks Will! :)
I think it took over a month to model the car and the environment... I actually modelled the interior bits as well, but you cannot see them from that rendered angle.
This did not include the render time which was very, very loooong...
02 February 2003, 11:58 AM
how long did it take to render then?
02 February 2003, 12:07 PM
It was rendered on my machine at own at print resolution (read: big image)... I had to make a background, foreground, reflection and car window pass.
Furthermore I split the scene into 144 tiles just in case the scene would crash during the render... which it did several times... ;)
I have no estimate of the total time, but each tile took between 4 to 50 hours or something to finish...
Seriously though, I cranked up most of the settings to maximum just for the h*ll of it. I could have cut down the rendertimes by 1000% but as I didn't have any deadline I thought I might as well see how far it can go... ;)
