View Full Version : HARDCORE MODELING!: Ray Harryhausen Tribute: Diorama

01 January 2007, 07:52 AM
Ray Harryhausen Tribute

Entry Type: Diorama
Creature/s: The 7 skeleton warriors/children of the hydra from Jason and the Argonauts

Plans for this challenge: Obviously by choosing this creature its not as hard as some of the others but that's due to my time retsraints really. I'll be able to do up one skeleton and then make the neccessary modifications and alterations to create his six bretheren.

As for the diorama I will probably find a good still from the movie and recreate it from that perspective...I do have a few nifty idea's up my sleeve which I may throw out there if I get the time.

Overall I look forward to participating in another hardcore modeling challenge and hope I can live up to my 30 models in 30 days win....

and so it begins

Base Shield Model

Last night I started work on this challenge. The reason I started with the shield is because I haven't actually modeled anything in about a month or two and wanted to ease back into it. It all seemed to come back to me pretty quickly and in about half an hour I had this base shield.

I mainly used the three images below to help build my base model of the shield used by the skeletons. The third image is actually from The 7th Voyage of Sinbad but provided a good view for the back of a skeletons shield.

There were four distinct variations of the shield that I could see and they all shared the same basic shape barring the picture design on the front. So I decided I would just model a base one and then modify it for each individual shield with textures, bump maps etc etc.

Whats next?
Next thing I'm doing is the base sword for the skeletons, from what I could work out they're all pretty much the same and also look like the ones that the argonauts are using.

I hope some other people pick up this challenge, I'd hate to be the only

Base Sword Model

It was hard to get a decent angle of the sword to try and work out exactly what it looked like. I used the following images to roughly work out the shape I came up with below.

I'm not 100% happy with this at the moment but for now it will do as a rough approximation for what the sword looks like....once i get a skeleton hand done I'll see how it all fits together and probly will revise it then.

Whats next?
Well I'll probly be moving onto part of the skeleton itself....just which bit I don't know yet...

Nice choice. I think the key to these guys is the eye sockets, makes them look so frightening!

great "time saving" idea, hehe. Model one you've got them all

Took a look on your 30 days 30 models thread, looks like this should be easy for you.

Good luck on the skeletons, can't wait to see it.
