in softimage|3d is there a really really fast way to translate quads into triangles?
I started using this wonderfull program very recently for work, and I'm still speed learning...

otherwise, when creating a primative, is there a way to stop it from making quads? (and triangles instead)

Its quite simple, In the model section take your mesh and then do a effects -> convert on it, it will be teselated into triangles.
