Its nice to see that the mighty Lglass is again developed!

I have XSI and the shader in the site is only for maya, so I cant use it until someone writes the spdl file to make it work in XSI.

Could someone post here the email addy of the developer (as I couldnt find it on site and it must be in the maya shader UI somewhere?

OMG. It s revived again.. wow, I m so happy. I have problem when working with l_glass in MR 3.5 with Maya 8 (32 bit only) so I must give up and use the normal dielectric

Can you post the email of the developer please? It says in the doc that its in the 'output' window, but as I said I dont have access to Maya and I have to wait until someone writes an spdl to make it work with XSI.

The reason I want the email addy is to ask about dispersion.The L-glass beta v2 from Jeff Patton has it implemented but from what I see the new version doesn not.

Seems like it does not support 64bit yet. I tried a few days ago and couldn't get it to work.

There's just been a 64 bit version released - but according to the autor not yet running.
@mer: EMail is in the "ABOUT.txt" in the shader package.

But keep in mind that it is very much still in alpha! I've had some issues, and note that I have talked to the developer. He will either release the new version to be "technically" workable with maya 7 or you have to hack it yourself.

At this point its 8.0 and up.

Also, to get GI or Caustics to work with shader you need to go to the Output Connections of the shader and under the "mentalray" tab and put the name of the shader (eg l_glass1) under "Photon".

Yes... Alpha indeed! But who isn't happy its back?

I'm also interested in the Maya 64bit version myself. Definitely let us know if it ever gets released. Thanx!

L_glass is way more realistic than dielectric or mia_material.
i wonder what mental images are waiting for? why don't they incorporate sush shader?

it looks like Lobber stopped development, but I did get a hold of the latest 64-bit one before he removed it.

Also, since he didn't include any installation notes, I'll post the old v2 install notes:


Windows users need MSVCR71.DLL


l_glass.dll {Maya program dir}\mentalray\lib
l_glass.mi {Maya program dir}\mentalray\include
AEl_glassTemplate.mel {projects dir}\maya\6.0\scripts
render_l_glass.xpm {projects dir}\maya\6.0\prefs\icons

Add two lines to maya.rayrc (mentalray-directory):
link "{MAYABASE}/lib/l_glass.{DSO}"
mi "{MAYABASE}/include/l_glass.mi"

Softimage XSI:

Uninstall old l_glass.
Menu "File/Add-on/Install" and select .xsiaddon file.
BETA-NOTE: no .xsiaddon file is available until release, so install using
the spdl-plugin method.
