Hi everyone! This is my almost complete alien model. Modeled in maya, around 13,000 tris, normal map created in Z-brush, then diffuse map painted in PS. I used app-link to fix the seems and add some color as I saw fit, and used PS's Normal Map filter to bump out some painted details like scales and veins. My friend has rigged and animated this guy also so I can post some poses if anyone is interested.

So here are some specific questions, and all other comments or crits on texture or anything is great.

1) Is the pink/purple on the face folds too saturated? Does it need noise or less pink etc.. I may have overdone it.

2) This is my first spec map so although I'm not done, am I on the right track?

3) Any suggestions on rendering this guy? Maya Hardware with default lights kinda sucks! Is there any plugins or anything you guys know about for Maya 7 or Z-brush which might help me get better renders? I've never rendered in Z-brush and have minimal knowlege of rendering/lighting in general so any info/tips are really appreciated!

needs some specularity so he looks like a slimey reptile. thats the feeling im getting anyways

Or a 'reptile - invertebrate'... it looks partly wormy to me.

Otherwise, excellent work so far! The normal map complements the model, bringing out details without overwhelming it, and seems to have been used quite well IMHO.

3: jsnormalmapper works for maya 7. i think it was. otherwise it can proably be found on google somehow.

In worst cases objectbased normalmaps render corrctly on maya software if you just connect outColor of the normalmap into the normalcamera on the material. (same as bumpmaps just without the bumpnode). But then ofc you cant animate it.

Nice work, teeth & face look somewhat "clean" but good job overall :)

hakanpersson: Yeah, this guys has been animated but my buddy ended up using mental-ray for the render so none of the normal maps showed up. "jsnormalmapper works for maya 7." I'll check into this thanks for you comments!

requiem2d: Thanks, I'll try and add some noise and little details in the face, I havent textured the teeth yet it's just a white phong E right now.

Finished for now! The teeth will be less symetric and textured and I hope to put this guy in an enviroment someday before I graduate for my reel.

Wow! I can't believe I missed the finals on this! It's looking very nice! I've got a few suggestions to make it pop even more. I think you said the eyes and teeth were not textured at this point? I'd texture them or at the very least make them yellower so they don't stand out so much. Second, the eyes might look cooler as a glossy black or red. Lastly, why not add some drool or food hanging off of his teeth? I think you can make this great model even greater!

Blacker: Thanks for your comment man! Yeah, I plan to change the teeth up and texture, and normal map them. I like your Idea about the eyes as well. I will get back to this guy soon, I just have another model I have to complete first. Drool is an awesome idea

Hm i think your work is technicaly very nice. But the pictures are - sorry - boring for me. Such a nice Alien and such a boring pose. Do a simple rig and then let your alien rock ;) I hope that was not too direct :D
