View Full Version : what exactly are spec and diffuse maps?

i've been playing around with some next gen stuff, i can make normal and color maps, but I see most people also use spec and diffuse maps. can someone please explain what these are?

In the simplest of descriptions Specular controls the shinyness and diffuse is what you know as a colour map (however it really should be something else but max calls colour maps diffuse maps)

A diffuse map is NOT a colour map. They are confused because standard materials in 3ds max call the colour map slot the diffuse slot, but that doesn't make them the same (nor should we assume everyone uses 3ds max). Here's a brief tutorial describing the use of diffuse maps:
