Some of my very first Lightwave work....
I restarted a few times, but now I'm pretty satisfied...
this was the concept
and this is what I have

Try to add some geometry instead of pushing the points, also make some weld in the middle points row (looks like some points not connected).
Not bad for first model keep it up :)

its funny that when we talk to someone we always look @ their head/eyes but when it comes to modeling a head or drawing a head we always mess up on the proportions.
Take a look @ this site for some basic head proportions.....it will really help your model shine!

IMHO, your sketch is not bad to start from, but look at how your proportions are way off between sketch and LW.
The guy in the sketch actually has a forehead while your model does not.
If you can work to more closely hit your sketch I think you'll be surprised how well it would work.
Try doing sketches at least from profile, and maybe some "character" stuff too.
