View Full Version : Mental Ray: Maya vs Max for large scenes

I currently have a scene with around 3 million polygons, no textures, no shaders. It renders in around 18 secs in Max 8+9 without any problems but not at all in Maya 7 (I have played around with various memory/BSP settings to no avail).
My question is why is this? Is it simply difference in the way the renderer is implemented or something else?

i'd like to know that for myself... so, someone around that can clarify this a bit?

how many RAM is in your machine ? did you set your max memory in Maya higher than the
standard 800MB ?

3mio Polys should work fine, at least it does here.

On my machine with max I can push up to 8 million polys, with maya a lot less, ok so im gonna check out that memory setting.

I have 3GB of ram in my machine and have tried many different memory settings from 300 to 2500mb. I have been able to multiply the polycount in max by many millions and it still renders fine, Maya just doesn't seem to be able to cope.

I also wonder, MR in 3DSMax really more stable then maya, we could see the way they handle render window, or preview of MR shader like SSS
