View Full Version : DS Mario Kart racer specs?

I've been playing this game a bit lately. Definitely the strongest in the series so I've been inspired to make a racer and my first attempt at DS specs. Anyone got an idea of what these little fellows are working with?

i may be wrong, but i would say each character, with vehicle, is under 250 tris, with a 64x64 map.
anyone else have an idea of what they may be?

The DS can render around 2048 tris on the screen at one time, so if you have a single object on a plane then that object can have 2046 tris (the plane would use 2). Usually you will have a 1000tris environment so that you would be able to have 3 player with about 300tris each. If you want more players you have to take from the environment. If you have only one player the best thing you be to have a 4-500tris player and 1500tris environment. I think you can go with a level up to 15.000-20.0000 tris maybe even more as long as you don't have all of the environment on the screen :D. As for texture size, I'm sure that the DS can handle 256x256 (maybe even 512x512... but I'm not sure about this... anyway... at a resolution of 256x178... you don't really need a 512x512 texture :-P). I try to stay under 128x128 and not go over 200-300 with a model (player/prop). As far as the memory goes... everything has to fit in 512kb of video memory, this is why it is better to have texture under 128x128... so that you can have a lot of them :D The geometry and animations have to fit on 4mb of ram. Oh, yes... and the textures should have under 16 colors, only use 256 colors if you don't have a choise:D
