However, in the following image, the ring is solid white in the alpha, and the stars don't show through in the RGB. the stars are single-point polys, so they're rendered as particles.
any ideas on how to solve this? particularly how to get the transparency map to correctly affect the alpha somehow?

Turn off ray traced transparency.
