View Full Version : Sci Fi Tech environment - Abstract - Ingame

I was in for some oldskool fun and made a level for the original Unreal Tournament of 1999. Its engine was of 1998 so this environment runs on almost 9 year old technology!

All pictures were taken ingame.

Everything was completely selfmade, from the concept to all the textures, architecture etc.

Its very low poly, the texturing brings in most of the detail.

The point was to make something oldskool that had a very vertical, tech-gothic, mighty and strong feel to it.

Link with all pictures

And besides some gameplay and sound additions its pretty much finished.

I already told you what I think on ICQ. I really like the vertical here. It is a simple design but strong. It is funny seeing how this has greater sense of form than nextgen levels which is cool.

Great atmosphere.
The lighting/coronas are really adding a lot to it.

You never fail to impress, Hourences. I really get a sense of verticality in here. It's always good to see people still making the most out of older game engines.

hey nice work!

this may be a funny question to you 3d guys but did you use normal maps for this?

That is amazing. I'd love to walk around in that environment :D

Intrikit, no normal maps. This is the orginal Unreal engine, the one that is from before 2000 (1998 to be precise)

Your link is dead. Can you put up the screenshots on a free hosting service like Imagesocket?

Its amazing. I love the simply style and the fact that its so lowpoly. Although you can't really see it's lowpoly, because it evokes the impression that it's totally complete. You don't miss polygons. It just looks as if it was never intended to be more highpoly, which it wasn't, i think ;)
Same goes for the texes. Dunno how it plays, but it looks damn hot and I don't think you messed up the gameplay by experience :D

Very cool! But the only thing that gets me is the Mondrian-esque metal tile texture in the first shot. It seems out of the place and looks like a "texture". But the overall look is great! :applause:

Yeah several people mentioned that plate texture and thus Ive changed it in the final version. Now looks like this:

For those who still have the old UT you can download the level here:

Thanks for the comments all.

Love good use of vertical space, keep it up :)

It looks great. My crit is I feel dislocated and disorientated looking at the screen shots. I think some features giving me a sense of scale like furniture, vending machines, signs, whatever, would counter that feeling.

what did you use for the glow effects on the lights?

01 January 2007, 08:55 AM
Now this is amazing. I love mood, monumental geometry, use of textures.

Unfortunately I don't own UT, and I won't be able to see it ingame :(

5* from me.
