02 February 2003, 01:07 PM
Hello ...

This is my first post in this CGTalk Forum ...

Does anybody know, where can I get resources for designing
Anime-ish Space Craft or vehicles ? (i.e. Macross, Gundam, etc)

I've been looking for such resources thru every search engine,
but I couldn't find any ...

Please help me, guys .... Thx :)

Hey, you might also want to look up animes such as Martian Successor Nadesico, Patlabor, and Appleseed. Masumune Shiro who does Appleseed, Ghost in the Shell and tank police has some terriffic vehicles in his manga and art collaborations. Try looking those up in some of the image galleries on the anime web turnpike.

If you seriously want some manga resources, you even concider BUYING some of the Books. I mean, you get used Mangas very cheap at eBay. This is what I did when I was looking for Mech-Resources - I just bought the whole Appleseed series ^_^
Especially ArtBooks might be some help as they contain only large, detailed, high quality artwork of characters, vehicles and scenery.
You might also want to check out some Animes. If you can't find any cool screenshots on the web, just use the notorius file sharing programs. They arn't very detailed references but at least you get to see your Spaceships from different perspectives...

Now for the Series.

Appleseed (Manga) is VERY good for Mechas and Cars but not good for Spaceships.

Ghost in The Shell (Manga and Anime) is equally bad for Spaceships. Space is not Shirow style. In fact, GITS has also almost no Mechas and very few cool cars.

I know that Cowboy Bebop (Anime but there is also a Manga which I haven't read yet) has some funky Spaceships but they are not quite my thing. Don't know why. You still might wanna check them out.

Gundam (Manga and Anime) is a good Source but I could never get myself to endure the dull story. :D

Macross (Anime) has plenty of Spaceships.

You might also want to check out Neon Genesis Evangelion (Manga and Anime). It's not space but they feature a few cool Airplanes. Also, the Series is quite popular so you get TONS of Pics.

Also, Dragonball (Manga & Anime) has some Spaceships, but they are quite Childish. Still, some great stuff.

Hmm... Heheh, I would also mention Final Fantasy .- The Movie here. They have very Mangaesque designs for their two Ships.

One of the Coolest Ship designs I ever saw in a Manga (&Anime) was from Plastic Little. They are not exactly Spaceships but Submarines, but the Style is very Futuristic so it would fit in Space as well. (plus: you see boobs on every page ;) )

Oh yeah, you might want to check out the Music Video I made once. Features some Manga-Style Aircrafts :D

DAMN, DAMN, DAMN !!!!! love the video, its very cool. great work

this work (the video) is typical manga craft stuff. the ships mosly look like that would never get off the ground, because they are so blocky or just huge. lots of moving panels, doors, motors, etc. aerodynamics are not top priority .

oh, and you always must have the exhaust trail :D

Krystman : thanks for your advice ...

I've just got 2 copies of gundam 3D from my friend.
They're surely show the extreme differences of anime ... err ...
'mechanicals' ...

And I can stop look at the pictures...
They're really amaze me a lot...

But, here's the worst:
Those pics ain't got me nowhere but overwhelmed even more...
How, do those japanese artist/designer build their craft concept ?
There should be somekind of phylosophy to their design ...

I don't know ... But, this SURELY what I've been looking for ...

Anyway, thanks for your reply ... ;)

BTW, I'm downloading your Music Video ... can't wait to see it ! ;)

CADster :
That's sounds like the basic principal of building an anime-ish
craft... ;)

Krystman that was a great music video, did you make the 3d clips?

Also those ships look realy good in the MV but there not quite anime style..

02 February 2003, 03:18 AM
Yo ... Kryst

I've seen your Music Video. That's an awesome work !!!
Bet, you've done a lot of detail works to get it done ...

Let me guess:
It's 3D animation with "cartoon" rendering ... Right ?

The planes are showing an anime-ish style a bit ...
And I like the HUD and Cockpit design...
But, IMHO, you have to correct some of the planes path...
Something weird about it ... I don't know ....

But, it's really a good job ... You did that alone ?

Hey guys ... check this out !!!

I've got them a while ago, and I think they're the most outstanding
singe pilot fighter concept ...
Einhander : MK-I
Einhander : MK-II
Einhander : MK-III

They're belong to SQUARESOFT ... From their game titled : EINHANDER

That's, IMHO, the real Anime-ish Space Craft...

Now that's Japanese art in glory
Fortian thanks for postin that man...

Thanks for the Props people :bounce:
I made the wohle thing on my own in two weeks with max and the illustrate plugin. I know it's not perfect but I hadn't realy the Time to go over it again. Just thought I post it here.

@hanzo - Well, I don't think there is some defined Anime style with fixed expectations. Everyone has to find their own way, when designing stuff.

As for the Einhander (*lol* Japanise people think german language sounds cool. Einhänder means "One-handed") - I actually thought of Square before I read the Post. :D Reminds of Rangarok from Final Fantasy 8.

02 February 2003, 02:09 PM
Ragnarok ... hey, I remember it ...

That's the one from Final Fantasy VIII, right ?
It's remind me to the FMV when the Ragnarok transform into
a kind of dragon (or it is actualy a dragon ?) and started to crawl on
some ... building stuff ... with its hands ... (great mechanism shown there ... )

The Ragnarok itself is truly AWESOME ... (thanks for remind me ...)

It seems that Japanese artist often get their idea or inspiration
from animals or myth animals...
As to Einhander, the first impression I got was those fighters are
hornets or bees or somekind of flying insects ... :rolleye:

But, I really like to know if there any kind of theory to design those ships...
Perhaps something sounds like this :
"If the cockpit is at medium size, then the thrust or intakes should
placed here ... here ... or there ... Don't put too much wing on the
main body, instead put 3 pairs around the thruster.... bla bla bla ..."

I'm not sure of it. But, maybe there is a lesson to Anime-ish styling
an aircraft or perhaps books ...

Looking for them just got me amazed, but put me to an overwhelming
situation to understanding anime-ish style and to start build ones... :hmm:

Krystman my mom's German so I know how cool they sound and one of my fathers best freinds is Japanese, You made that MV very well, and dispite it not being Japanese of course Japanese would like it, they like art....But what I meant was that I knew it wasn't Japanese... And I don't think it has much Japanese influence so it wouldn't be a good example of Japanese styled mecha/space craft.. Your a good and fast artist, just compare yours to what you've seen in anime...

It's very good style though:thumbsup:
