The only Visual Studio I can think of is M$ visual studio.

He is probably reffering to Avid|DS.
As for the questions, you cannot really compare software-only compositing solutions with a dedicated turn-key $80k+ solution. Avid's target with DS was rather discreet's fire/inferno combo than anything else.
With that being said, yes it is a very powerful workhorse, fast, scalable and best of all, it manages to go a long way towards the Holy Grail of integrating an editing and a compositing system under the same interface.
As for the rest, it has all the required tools and then some to work even difficult visual effects shots. It would be nice though if at one point they will update its color correction interface.
