View Full Version : First Lip Sync animation- Critique's Welcomed

This is my first try at a CG lip sync but I'm having problems getting it to look solid. So far its a little washy. All help is apprecitated. This is a WIP.

My method (for better anaylsis): I work in a pose to pose method. I key everything out with the tangents set to stepped so it pops. Then when I'm happy with the timing I switch the tangents to linear to see how the computer interprets what I've done. Unfortunatly this is where things break down for me. The poppy version looks good but the others come off very washy. Thanks again for any help.

Welcome to CGTalk, this is your first post I see. :)

Lip sync is looking fine. Two things that I'm not so sure is the mouth shape you're getting for "true". And the little gasp in "the false grail *gasp* will take it from you", the gasp doesn't seem to flow from the "grail".

With lip syncs I leave the mouth on linear. If you go to splines with it you might lose some control with the mouth.

Looks good though.

Now if you're planning on acting the whole dialogue, do the body first because that's the first thing people read, not the lips.

As for you method of animation, I work the same way. Pose to pose, stepped tangents... but if things start getting weird when you switch to linear try another pass with the stepped tangents before going to linear. With this pass still in stepped, define the motion a little bit more.

Take a look at Keith Lango's tutorial on overlap ( and favoring ( to understand breakdowns a little bit more. Once you have this extra pass in stepped, switching to linear you should have a some more control.

Keep at it.

Thanks for the comments SirRon. I'll be looking into fixing those little bits soon. I'm very familiar with Keith Lango's site. As a traditionally trained animator his approach made much more sense.

Here is the lip sync again after another pass (this was before I read your comments). I basically went through the f-curves and tweaked a lot, so that some places are linear where others are spline. I hope you can tell a difference.

Again, any comments are welcomed.
