View Full Version : Paris riots day to night

Thought i'd post my first serious attempt of making a day to night matte painting.
Not quite sure on how to make nice light interaction on the rooftops with highlights and such (tried a bit but not satisfied), would be nice with some pointers!
Planning to add more and probably refine the fire to make everything more chaotic and work more on the mob down left.
Used about hmm 4-5 sourcephotos, some things such as the not so good looking smoke is painted with custom brushes.
The jpeg compression seems to be screwing up the picture a bit, will try to post a better image as soon as i've done some changes.
Please feel free to comment on how to improve this.

Looks nice, I would only suggest to make it darker.

Looking nice, i agree, need a little level adjustment. Not sure why but the colour of the flames don't look quite right, almost like a blue tint has been added afterwards. thumbs up:thumbsup:

Hey again, thanks for the tips!
Here's an updated version, added some more fires, tried to refine the fire and lower the overall brightness. Also added a little hooligan on one of the roofs with a torch in his hand.
Not sure if im gonna add anything more, maybe some more evil men on the roof perhaps.
If you got any ideas or suggestions please write em down.

nice one persa, I think the blue is a little bit too saturated , and you have to think about exposure, think about the fire down there wich such an exposure the surrounding buildings have to be illuminated more by the fire
I would add stronger moon highlights on the roofs and the gargolie itself, I think the moon has a very strong glow that does not let see the moon shape, it looks more of a sun than a night full moon
other than that it is a great night shot

yeah i agree with your comments Jamie, and thanks for your inspirational work by the way :). Dunno what happened with the moon, i had some moon surface visible but must have lost it somewhere in the process. Gonna brighten up the fire color bleeding and fix the blue saturation.
Regarding painting highlights on the rooftops and the gargoyle, do you have any pointers?
Do i either paint small bits on the rooftop with a bright color then blend it in or do i copy the gargoyle/rooftop pass and brighten it up it then paint a layer mask for the highlights? Do you have any good tips or tutorials for painting light, im having trouble with that...

Here's a new update
Tried to paint in highlights on the roof and gargoyle, tweaked the light from the fire, fixed some details in the moon and color corrected everything a bit. Thought the gargoyle took over the composition to much so i cut its head off.
Im starting to feel pretty finished with this piece now, im not going to go 3d or animate it cause its to much work with the crowd and fire/smoke and im tired of the thing already.
