Goal is to model and texture character based on an insect. Winner be most orginal design (and need to be great looking also :P).

some samples:

The limits:
ONE 512x512 texture (if needed one extra 256x256 is allowed)
2500 triangles

Starts now : Tuesday 24th of October
End date: Tuesday 31th of October at 12:00 PM CET

doubt i'll have time to finish, but maybe i'll give this a go, question though, and maybe i'm just being dumb, based on an insect just means that it has to look insect-like right? not like a specific insect?

Aye carumba! Haha. So this is your final? The diffuse is quite simple and smooth, though I suppose the Simpsons character didnt have a whole lot of texture. Nice work.

well i thought about a normal map x) but actually im to lazy this time (working on my reel now) to unwrap and texture this buddy ...

Oh by the way, noobie question. When you said 1 texture, would that include diffuse, spec, norm, etc. or just one channel.

I think Ill allow any means, but at intrest I wanted to see ur textures.
In games where ive been working on, we have used only 24bit (one channel) and 32bit (with alpha) targa files. So I think one texture can include more that one channel.

That's odd I was told that most modern games can handle diffuse, bump, spec, and perhaps another channel, but I could be wrong. Which system are you working on?

But anywho, using just one channel is fine. My model is pretty much done. I'll probably post up the untextured model Monday and the final at 11:59 Tuesday.

I didnt mean that cannot handle diff, bump, etc. But if those are needed those are in diffrent files. for example one texture file including alpha and other file for bump (can be smaller size, and save some video memory, like in psp).

But anywho, using just one channel is fine. My model is pretty much done. I'll probably post up the untextured model Monday and the final at 11:59 Tuesday.

pauler your bumble bee man is awesome :thumbsup: I wish i could do characters so i could enter. I wish i had time to enter these contests, i keep saying to myself i will but i really only have time to make stuff that would fit into my college project and sadly non of the contests i have seen so far work. Im being a bit cheeky here but to the person who wins is there any chances of the next contest being some sort of prop or maybe a building you would find in a city i really want to enter! :D or maybe something just a lot quicker and easier to make than a character im sure it puts a lot of people of entering having to do complex things in a week! no offence to the person who chose this one :blush:

Here is a quick pass of the model I've been working on. There might be some little changes in the final. It's about 2480 tris. I'll have the wires and finish piece tomorrow.

I said it in the last character contest, too - one week is not enough time to get a lot of entries for characters. The MGAC really works better with smaller projects. Props, RTS units, Top down shooter stuff - designing a character is a lot more difficult and time consuming than making a prop.

Instead of full characters it may be better to do a head/bust of a character.

Agreed but its rarely you get so much time in game studios anyway, its good practice on speed and efficiency I guess :)

Agreed, I'm really pushing myself to finish the UV Mapping, which is painfully long. Modelling isn't all that bad, I did my model in about six hours more or less. Texturing should be pretty quick though.

k, here's my guy/bug-thing finished and modeled
2500 tri's exactly with a single 512 colour map
and the very loose texture

i have to say, while i didn't expect to actually finish this myself, i'm pretty surpised at the amount of talented artist here who are talking about not having enough time for the comp. how long does it really take to model a 2500tri character? 5 hours? 6 if you take a break? i'm not trying to sound like a jerk but really if it takes much longer than that then you may need to reconsider your modeling techniques; or at least just not enter contests you don't think you'll be able to finish.
anyway that's my rant take it however you want

Some people do not have a lot of time outside of work, etc. It may only take you 5-6 hours to model that, but you defnitely need more time on the texture - overuse of the plastic wrap filter is really taking the piss out of your model.

In my current job, I have to be able to model and texture buildings in a couple hours. Take that however you want it.

I think the key word here is "challenge." Insect character IS a challenge. RTS unit IS a challenge. Criminal character IS a challenge. I think the biggest problem this challenge runs into is people get past the modeling part and move onto the boring part and get uninspired. Part of the challenge is in the completion of the project.

Sprite specs would be more apporprate for a full character in the MGAC. Please for everyone in the future who considers doing a full character check out this material by Paul Robertson before you decide your specs:

I think the keyword is mini.

The MGAC was originally designed to be something that could be completed in a week. A smaller project.

I'd rather see 10 entries every week instead of 2. Take that however you want it.

I say leave the bellyaching to those who are actually competing. If you're not competing because you don't think you'll finish, that's completely up to you. But, why not compete (even if you DON'T finish) and improve on your speed and workflow. No one said you HAVE to finish it. This is a fantastic learning experience, not just a free showcase of your abilities. Why not compete and improve instead of complaining?

Scudz - Very nice! I think the texture could use a little more work, but it's looking pretty nice!

Please, whoever wins. Pick a prop or weapon or something. Try to imagine a 3 hour limit on this at most instead of the current of 6-8 hour.

ScudzAlmighty - very nice model there, really love the legs, they remind me of something, but i cant quite place what at the moment. The cracks in his skin where we can see his yellow insides is disgusting! (in a good way though :thumbsup: )

everyone else - I'm not going to turn this into any more of a flame war than it already is - I think my views are pretty clear from my MGAC topic thread.

Yeah, I can appreciate that this is just a bit of fun and should be able to be done in a few hours, but at the same time I think it should be useful as a learning tool. Of course time was when you would of been asked to make a real simple model in the industry, but those days are, for the most part, long gone I feel.

The industry is really changing at the moment, what with the whole 'next gen' thing, and maybe attitudes towards the MGAC need to change too, seems to me that the only artists who would be making something to 'original' MGAC specs now are those working on handheld games, and even they are getting pretty crazy with the amount of polys etc that you can squeeze into them.

What gets me as well is that no one complained about the 2500 tri RTS building MGAC a few weeks back, but now all of a sudden theres a problem...

Ok thats my rant over, it's not meant as a personal bitch against anyone, simply just my thoughts. Perhaps some agree with me, more than likely a lot disagree. Either way it's cool, just voicing my tuppence

As I mention begin this challenge that winner will be most orginal design.

Nice model, very nice .. but design isnt orginal :D But nice work anyway.
Its actually best model in here.

sorry that u didnt have time get those textures ready, but model was intrested looking, thou that wasent smoothed yet (personal I think smoothed mesh looking better that with hard egdes as when we are talking about characters).

nice model, looks like something from Starcraft or halflife world.
some critique about texture, it looks little bit plastic. without that bad-photoshop-bevel/emboss-effect it whould look better.
And in game point of view that isnt best model to make animation.
In short .. ur winner of this challenge :D

With week, 2500tri, 512x513 texture, everybody should have skills and time to try to make something.
Ofcourse if ppl dont have intrested in this MGAC that is totally diffrent think.
Ill personally like more that kind challenge where need to break own limits, and not to make something what everybody can do with eyes close.
Im looking that day when somebody has balls to put challenge where need to make anatomy right human with under 400tris :D

I didn't throw down because, I'm a bit spoiled. Any design I sketched inevitably leened towards an anime monster and I'll get enough harassment for "unoriginality" once I start posting my RPG game character designs here.

I think in honor of emergence day being next week, you should make it the design of some sort of sweet weapon/gun. :) GOW has the gun/chainsaw combo, ratchet and clank/oddworld have those zainy weapons. Could be a cool challenge.
