View Full Version : Tokyo allyway

this is the start of a allyway that I have started to model out, I am using this photo (http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c72/artraider/02-k-Tokyo_Alley.jpg)
as a refrance. I wondering if I was going in the right direction with scale and if anyone knew what I should try to do with the mess of metal bars in the uper part of the photo.Should I just make up wires and bars to fill the space?

Upload a bigger photo so we can see them! :P
You could probably get away with modelling the bars (isn'tit a external fire escape stairway?) with a mixture of intersecting geometry (for the main frame of it) and alpha planes (for the intermediate bars). I don't think there's any way they'd stand up as JUST alpha'd out planes in the newer engines.
Interesting subject, btw. Good luck! :)

If this is the only photo you got to work with then I'd have to say this project may not end how you plan it to. It doesn't seem to be a good representation of Tokyo. 25% of the space is just 2 garage doors and the people take up a good portion as well, not to mention they are blocking a lot of the details.
Have you looked around for some better photos? Also have you considered street corner? The kind they have in those tiny little allies with pachinko, an arcade, a hostess bar, a noodle shop and a convenience store all just 2 steps away?

I think the buildings are hitting the ground to clean. After staying in tokyo for some time I came to the conclusion it was designed to break people ankles. There are a lot of little steps and curbs you can throw in there.
Same with China, but in a different way. Unless you're in center city there are no street lights at night time.

thanks for the advice, I was also told to change up the lighting but have stuck with omni's mostly for the base and lamp lights.

Pulled this from my reference collection since it might be helpful for you: http://ghidora.liquidweb.com/~neonauti/NightLife/Tokyo_154.jpg
The bottom left shows the uneven ground Judd was refering to.
Also note all the power lines and wires running everywhere at the top. Lots of verticle signs trying to get attention and many other detials. Hope this helps a little. Keep working at it :)

You requested more alley shots, so here you go: (56k beware... large images)
Nice night shot. Lots of colorful signs and ambiant light so you can see everything.
Main thing I like in this shot is the walkway going over the street.
Lots of good details in this shot. Pick and choose what you want to use.
You might want to set up your scene something like this so you don't have to make too much stuff.
Another shot with lots of details.
Hope these help you out.
