I bought the book a couple of days ago at Barnes and Noble, I also bought the "Prelude to Eon" book by Greg Bear, "Legacy". I'm enjoying EON now.
This challenge really rocks!
I'm gonna do it with Flash, Photoshop, Lightwave and my guitar in Cakewalk. Maybe other software.
I'm currently working on a Flash - Wacom hand drawn TV /web commercial animation for a client too, but this challenge is too much fun to pass up.

Fabio and Claire- Thank you so much for welcoming me to this challenge!
I figure the Eon challenge needs some E-on software, so I just finished ordering
the boxed version of Vue 5 Pro Studio!

This is a concept of the title and opening which I plan to animate with a spaceship entering the dock as the camera moves in.

Working on some possibilities for the 4th chamber. Gotta add clouds and more lakes,rivers. I did an animation, camera fly thru which I havent posted yet. I plan to add a V/STOL flying
thru...and those Russian paratroopers falling would be interesting.

Thanks fifty3dragons. I just finished reading EON two days ago. Really enjoyed it, I'll start Legacy tomorrow. I've been doing a simple pen on paper storyboard, getting ideas, which I'll surely change. It's a lot of fun to consider different storyboards.

This is my concept for a Russian V/STOL that is participating in the attack on the potato. Sketched in Photoshop on my Wacom. I think the Russians planned to fly this inside the potato. Hmm.. Has rotatable jet engines on wingtips . I should add rocket exhaust out the back...for space or a boost.

I'm thinking of changing the aspect ration to "Academy standard". Since this is for a possible movie, that makes sense. I'm also working on Patricia, but in 2d. The 3d V/STOL is coming along, not a Russian concept but the one in the book. Been assembling this into a trailer in Flash.

Nice to see you're still working away at it.
You can do Academy standard, but make sure to double check the instructions where they state that the final submission has to be in 4:3 aspect ratio and maximum resolution of 640x480. If you want a different aspect ratio, you have to letterbox it inside the 4:3 (that's the approach I'm taking with a 16:9 letterboxed inside a 4:3 at 640x480).

Galactor- Ahhh...Eternity, a sequel to Eon. I'll probably read that sometime later.
right now I'm emersed in Legacy. Its about Olmy and his sdventures in the
early days of the stone.
fifty3dragons- Ive started letterboxing in 640 by 480 too. I like the way it looks. Characters
can fill the center and there's still room arround them for some epic background.
I'm doing this myself but I've talked to a friend of mine about possibly joining up
later to film me and others in HDdigital. Now if the producer he works for would
let him build a big -real active- metal robot to be a Guardian in the Way....I haven't
asked him but he does that all the time for years. I'm sure they're too busy.
Anyway, about the way- It looks like in my last Vue 5 render the cap wall is heating up.
Which gives me the great idea to animate the opening of the way. That be in the Seventh
Chamber....So why is it threatening a breach in the fourth? So my mind imagines the panick in those picknickers when they look up and see this. Will there be a sudden implosion, a sucking away of the chamber air? Yeah...oh dear there goes that picknicking brat.

I checked this out yesterday but then forgot to comment :)
It's got a nice even flow to it. It introduces the story well and has some great visuals (very nice with the fly through). One thought I had was that there seems to be a fair amount of text there all together (especially the spot talking about the libraries, etc). Even if it's intended as spoken (i.e. voice over) it feels like quite a bit. Maybe consider trimming it down some, or spreading it over a slightly wider time frame with more images in between? Just a thought.
But overall, definitely a great start. I'm looking forward to more!

fifty3dragons- Thanks! Yes, thats exactly what I plan to do! I plan to strech it out to 90 seconds. I went to hook up my scanner, but it won't work with my new machine. And when I tried to download a new driver, that wasn't available. That's why I haven't got any more storyboard sketches up. But I have some photoshop-wacom drawn sketches I need to add.
I've just been learning my brand new Vue 5 program I ordered for this contest.Oh- and yes- I plan to voice over as Lenier and also get shot in a close up as a I say a cool
line about the stoned effect.

Think this looks better as an Island? This is a first frame straight render from an animation setup. There's my VSTOL and a building on the island. I did another test animation with Patricia skinny dipping but with a stock female model, so I may make my oun Patricia 3d model so I can show it! I will try a rough wavy water surface here, as in the swim test which isn't posted yet.

fifty3dragons- Thanks. Yes I am working on the scale. When I added the vstol I shrank the trees for scale. I shrank them a lot, but forgot to shrink the three mushrooms, which are btween the trees. The mushrooms are the three grey ones in the image before I added the vstol. That made the mushrooms really huge in scale! Really cool! I decided to delete the huge skyscraper mushrooms for now because I am working on scale now. But I thought I might add them down the path later as a sideshow. So it's amazing to get home today and see you got a weird impulse to draw giant mushrooms! Reminds me of the effect I had on the computer graphics department's creative animations when I was the artist at a TV station!
Talk about parrallel universes, Greg Bear is working on a book about two parallel universes that collide. And today I just bought his book "Dead Lines" by Greg Bear. It's about tuneing in to a frequency the dead use to communicate with living people. I actually wrote a 176 page script about a parallel universe intersecting with ours. Wrote it in 1999. I plan to rewrite it and make a trailer for it after this one. And I have a few large oil paintings about that, and the dead communicating to us, done years ago,one finished this year. Cool.

fifty3dragons- I know how you feel about having a head start! I'm just starting to learn modo now, and am reading "The Official Luxology modo Guide". Sofar just for this challenge I'm learning Vue and modo, read Eon, and also reading Legacy and Dead Lines, the last 3 books are by Greg Bear too. Not that Dead Lines has anything to do with Eon. It's just that it's very interesting. Soooo....I hope to get a modo Frant or Jart up soon...modo is interesting too.

Yeah, I'm in the same boat (in terms of learning new software, that is). I've had LightWave 3D for a couple of years now, but never really got to do much with it, and almost nothing at all for a year or so as I've been busy with school, family, and writing (my school work isn't even remotely related to CGI or animation).
And I just got Painter, although that's been extremely intuitive so far thankfully (and I got my hands on the Ryan Church Gnomon DVD on High Architecture, which has helped considerably). For some reason I've had much better succes with Painter than I ever did in Photoshop.
And then there's the Adobe Production suite. Honestly, I've been eyeing this stuff for a couple of years now, and this trailer challenge finally gave me the good excuse to go ahead and get it, which is great except now I'm hip-deep in manuals. :scream:
And none of that is to mention the pile of art books from the library on my shelf as I try to further my understanding of stuff like perspective, design, composition, etc, etc. At this rate I'll have given myself a year or two's worth of education compacted into three months!
But then, that's probably the real value in doing all this, isn't it. :)

Hey userBrian, great idea to use a challenge to force yourself to study a new piece of software! And you're making great steps ahead too! Nice looking plane you have there, expecially talking about the engines at the end of the wings...
A couple of suggestions if we may:
-watch out the simmetry of the plane as the tip seems to be simmetrized too and maybe it shouldn't.
-try to contrast your images a bit...even if there aren't shadows yet this could really improve the look of the chamber. Having a key light with strong shadows and a dimmed light as a fill vill certainly add depth.
-Referring to the lower angle render, the one at the base of the mushrooms, try and add something near the camera and put that out of focus (in comp). This could also add depth to the render too.

A couple of really nice models you have there. I think the plane came out especially well. Looks like you're getting the hang of modo pretty fast. :) I've never actually tried it myself, but maybe I'll have to give it a go (after the challenge is over; I have enough software to learn already).

ThE-ShiFT-Thanks for that very constructive post! Yes, I stayed up all night, I think I went to sleep arround 7 am. I was mirroring that plane left and right fixing the wing and props and seats. Ended up just cloning the seats, 6 of them. And yes I mirrored off enough to double that nose antenna! Funny thing I was looking at that in the render and wondering why that was and why the center cockpit canopy bar was too thick! Now I know! LOL! Thanks.
Yes the contrast on that mushroom picture is a disaster- I'll have to increase it. That mushroom is part of the Vue terrain and I would probably build my own If I wanted more control. Maybe if I throw that scene in the trailer i'll do that. In the book the plasama lights shadows are very light, but I think I should increase it.
fifty3dragons- Thanks! Yes, I'm trying out Lightwave 9 too. I modeled that plane in my old version of lightwave, then continued modeling in LW9, and then rendered it in modo. The background clouds are a photo I took by the beach with my cellphone. I composited it in photoshop. I turned the photo on edge as the clouds going up the side are suitable for the chambers. So I'm learning Vue,modo and Lightwave 9 for this challenge. Yikes! And i'm doing this challenge alone. Unless I throw in some videocam shots of people acting later.

I'm working on the 7th chamber now and this is a wip. I modeled Patricia and the truck and road and the chamber in Lightwave and rendered in Vue. That plant in the foreground might be making the truck look too small. I need to add more detail to the far landscape and refine the clouds a lot. The road may look too Tronish? Maybe I should go back to rocky textures.
There are no post touchups here because I hope to animate the scene a little.

I like that it sounds like deep space, hadn't thought of that. I was thinking of the sadness of Patricia's situation. Focused on her. She's the one sent to save us. Actually my lyrics are pretty sad. I'll add that later, hopefully. Thanks for your input and fifty3dragons'. And all of you other guys. Hope I get a couple more animations in before it's curtains. This challenged ramped it up a notch in the sense of hurry- hurry- meet the deadline. Makes me wonder what it's like to be a pro at this! But I really enjoy it. I think you get to tell a story much more interestingly than with a single image or just one short animation. I like this type of challenge better.

That music is awesome. I think you've got a really unique take with it, kind of sad and bittersweet and yet really captiviating as well. It made me think a lot of Firefly (a show I really like, so please take that as a complement). I'm looking forward to the animatic when you finally put the pictures to music!

Lightwave 9 and Vue 6
This is a closeup of the approach on the stone. I'm into the realism stage, and I don't know if I will have the time to get more realistic. Probably, as I need to set the craters into the stone, but this will do. I'm trying to get a metalic and rock effect. And I want to be scary. The animation of this rock comming to your face seemed to get there.
Spire and Oz- Thank you so much for saying this looks original. I really strive for that. Now I have to go into the realistic re-doing of it all!
fifty3dragons- thank you for comparing me to Firefly. Although I haven't seen it yet, I googled Firefly and was amazed. I will have to rent some dvd's! Just what I wanted to do!
Sounds really like my direction. Makes me feel real interest in which way Greg will choose to present his work. I just hope he puts his control into the movie. Then again I wonder what would happen if he selected special artists to be inspired- if he could see the changes that he approves, of course. Oh- and about the 2d stuff- I added a 2d atomic blast blowing up a city and the change or reality seems to fit- I'll see. Photoshop and wacom cells.

Yeah, I really liked Firefly. I'm was quite disappointed they discontinued the show (only 13 or 14 episodes).
I like your latest image. If you have time, it might be worth putting a little heavier shading on one side of the asteroid just to give it that added 3-dimensionality. Looking good though. Any animatics on the horizon?

I'm using Lightwave 9 and Vue6 here.
This is a movie of the stone to show it's shape, as it approaches. I added some craters to the model and I like the metal-rock look. I think it looks realistic. I have other things to complete so the stone's look is finished, I think. I'm lucky I got this extra time! I am doing this all myself.And the work in this challenge is awesome! Sure am glad I entered.

Looking good. I think this shot shows off the shadowing much better than just the still image did and the Stone comes across very well. Nice camera work too. Keep plugging away! I finally got some of my own 2D stuff posted. Looking forward to seeing what you've got cooked up! :)

Hi. It's 4 a.m. again and I finally got this done. I'll do the flyby movie later. I wanted to give the buildings a bit of a loose flow. I left the cables out because they might not be that visible way up in the clouds anyway. Those are all volumetric clouds. Gotta move on!

Thistledown. I wanted to show the concept of the hanging buildings as they would appear upside down in the chamber, and I can't recall anyone else doing it. So I really appreciate your saying it's original! This is my attempt to show Greg's architectural vision in a way that seems necessary for him to sell his unique, original vision. Impact is what I hope to achieve. This here, of course, in a subtle way. It would be fun to treat a movie script like this. But then again, I'll be making the trailer for my script next....maybe though I need to write a novel first..."getting it" is so much the picture! Some of the volumetric cloud detail is lost in the compression. I hope to put a longer shot in my trailer, but time is drawing to a close.

shearerludmil- Thank you for the compliment- There are such fantastic artists in this challenge it is a real pleasure to be in this game. I just made a 10 second shot of this scene which I added to my trailer, with a few added volumetric clouds. Interesting that you had a dream about it. Could you describe your dream? I had a show of my acrylic Sci-fi/fantasy paintings a while ago and someone also said he had a dream of one of my paintings. I think I project subconsciously like a television station. That's the way the mind works.

Whew! Talk about cutting it close. You had me worried there for a minute. Congratulations on finishing the challenge!!!
I've already said it before, but the music is great. Nice and easy and simple, but all the richer for it in my opinion. Some very nice modelling in there as well, especially the plane and Thistledown City.
P.S. I trust no ducks were injured in the making of this trailer? hehe
