View Full Version : Commercial:Lemming City

10-06-2006, 02:48 PM
Hi everyone,

Its been a while since i posted anything , so i figured it was time to show two new commercials we did at my work at BUG.

One Call - Lemming City

We were asked to come up with ideas for commercials for a Norwegian broadband company that was also delivering a "All-in-One" box for internet connections, WiFi and phone, without the hassle of having too many cables.

The idea spun around showing angry animals using computers and their frustrations dealing with cables.
This is the "international" version, allthough they're not advertising internationally , in the original we had norwegian voices and text.

WOOOOOW!!! These are 2 of the funniest spots I think I've ever seen! LOVE the character designs, and the bodily explosions are the best thing since sliced bread! :D

Had all the guys here at working laughing, and the animations have gone straight into my inspiration folder.

Everyone who worked on those should be proud! 5 stars from me....I hope this gets plugged soon!!

10-06-2006, 07:43 PM

10-06-2006, 07:54 PM

10-06-2006, 08:19 PM
Excellent! One of the few commercials I've actually enjoyed watching.

10-06-2006, 10:23 PM
LoL !
Awesome concept and great job, everything is so well done and I luv the style of it.
btw, how long did it take you guys to finish the whole thing ?

10-06-2006, 10:36 PM
HAHAHAH that was kool, Great Stuff man, must have taken hours to do the explosions/blood affects ;) awesome

10-06-2006, 11:19 PM
Thanks for sharing those commericals. I was cracking up. The detail is so good you have to watch it over and over to catch all you wonderful work.

Did the Norweigen client come up with the exploding character idea or is that your idea you brought to them? I only ask because I don't know how well that would sell to the average consumer having cute little Lemmings blow themselves up, but the good thing is your not really concerned about that.

Take care guys:thumbsup:

10-07-2006, 10:00 AM
Nice modeling, nice render, everything is just perfect!

10-07-2006, 10:18 AM
LOL I luv thos little animals... man they are really god commercials. Really welll done!!!
Thanks for sharing and let's see more of ur works.

10-07-2006, 10:59 AM
Excellent spots, really dug the animation and especially the humor :D Well done!

10-07-2006, 11:09 AM
lol, just brilliant :applause: :D

10-07-2006, 11:27 AM
Absolutly fantastic!!! :applause:

10-07-2006, 11:37 AM
Oh god... that was funny!
I don´t know why but the little lemming is so stressed that it makes me feel really good.

There´s another thing that caught up my attention: exploding little animals on a commercial tv spot. Don´t get me wrong cause I HAVE NOTHING AGAINST IT and it has "brilliantly" used here but this is the sort of stuff that you would never see happening down here in Brazil. Well, maybe that is what were missing for me to move to Norway. Hey! Do you have an open position there at BUG? JEG KAN NORSK!!! :deal: :)
Gratulerer! Det vaer jaevla bra!!! :buttrock:

5 STARS! No doubts!

10-07-2006, 01:01 PM
Fantastic job
Both of them are amazing
nice colors and cool style :)

10-07-2006, 01:05 PM
LOL I can totally empathize with the little creatures :) Great commercials!

10-07-2006, 01:12 PM
Hey there I think the lemming is just incredible work.
I do agree that the exploding part may be a bit extreme for commercial tv.

But all in all thanks for sharing that's one of the funniest ads I've seen in a long time.
So much for being feisty huh? ;)

10-07-2006, 01:16 PM
poor creature :buttrock:

well done man

10-07-2006, 01:42 PM

Great !

So great ! Thanks for sharing !

I went key by key-frame with the wet fur on the movie, it went out very kool too, it's not easy to achieve a good looking effect as that. Congratulations !
Actually I watched it all many times and everything key frame by key frame... *lol*

Something on them remind me my own little creatures of my short movie. Maybe their 'explosive' temper. *lol*

Fantastic !

10-07-2006, 01:43 PM
great man... very detailed.. that last shot with eye intense.. and getting red... cool:scream:

10-07-2006, 02:26 PM
Excellent work. The explosions are a bit graphical for my taste and could have been done another way, though. Nonetheless very funny.

10-07-2006, 02:29 PM
Holy moly! Wow, thanks for all the comments and the plug!

snwbrdn7, As there were no agancy involved we had total freedom in what we wanted to do, so as soon as we did some sketches and storyboards of our ideas the client approved them and we went into production.

Sherif.Nagib , thanks, i think we did it in about 2 two months, with 5 people going on and off the project.

Cadinho, i guess its a mixture of tom&jerry/itch&scratchy kinda humour that we're all so familiar with, that made it work/air :) We also sent some previews to the cencorship/quality check departments of the tv stations that were going to air it, they had a laugh and gave us green light :)

Again, superthanks for the comments, really appreciate it.

10-07-2006, 02:42 PM

Excellent stuff. Congrats on the plug.

I've seen this many times on TV, and wondered who did it. Now I know...

Great work guys.

10-07-2006, 04:36 PM
Hahaha that was great, exploding animals, gotta love it. Too bad you wont see stuff like that on US tv.

10-07-2006, 06:08 PM
Hahahahhahahaha... oh my god... that was sooo funny; great work, the character design, the expressions, the poses... pure ace.

Love the black humour too.

10-07-2006, 07:08 PM

Wow, just hilarious - I can totally relate! Thanks for these. :)

10-07-2006, 08:30 PM
Really fun stuff. I'd be amazed to see something this graphic on any of my local TV commercials.

10-07-2006, 09:01 PM
great stuff guys, easily deserves its front page status, nothing like watching some critters blow themselves to kingdom come, lol. keep it up guys:thumbsup:

10-07-2006, 10:43 PM
It is really very fantastic

10-07-2006, 11:10 PM
Fantastic and hilarious work! I hope to see more of these someday! I'd love to see these for US products too, but they would have to find away around the explosions. Awesome character design. This is very inspiring for future animators too, I hadn't considered commercials animations before.

10-07-2006, 11:38 PM

just love it

way to go. Pure sweet style of rendering. Doens't make it feel completely like a 3dimentional animation.

10-08-2006, 12:41 AM
I prefer the second one: It's making the point much more forward and to the point than the first one.

The only thing is...the second one shouldn't aggravate the hamster that got the OneCall...the Right Call. I think it was being paradox. I feel like saying, "so what? The right cable isn't helping...I'm still agitated"

Nevertheless...the animation is all good.

BTW: I never thought Norwegians don't have any issues with violent 'explosions'.

Oh well. Different culture, different mentality.

Congrats anyway. :)

10-08-2006, 01:41 AM
WOW! very wild and funny stuff with great timing and design! I'm still watching it now and trying to find out more interesting detail :D

10-08-2006, 03:21 AM
wow! nice animate

10-08-2006, 06:14 AM
furry cutieness that explodes i love it.

10-08-2006, 07:30 AM
That was completly super cool!!! 5 stars from me...

The lemmings makes me remember Scratch, from ice age, the personality on the animation made the link... and the eyes design! Cool!

10-08-2006, 08:48 AM
awesome! FUNNY! EXCELLENT! :)
can't stop watching it.. I'm still laughing :)

WAAAAAH :applause:

10-08-2006, 09:06 AM
Hohohho!! :o) Very good timing & rythm! :)
Congrats on the rendering and Special Effects! :p

warfahaha :D

That's some exellent stuff, i love that kind of humor .... Great works guys, 5 stars

:bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

10-08-2006, 09:23 AM
Those were freakin phenomenal! That client should be uber proud. I love the tiny animation details like the flipping ears, crooked eyes, and mouth gestures. As well, it's simply so rare that you see a 3D character done for commercials that are designed so well that it engrosses you. Immediately, one of my favorites.

Below is my new wallpaper hahaha

10-08-2006, 10:27 AM
wow :D so great i love the little details like seeing the "blue screen of death" on the PC. In the UK this ad would be banned before it even hit the airwaves i think unfortunatley :(.

10-08-2006, 11:29 AM
4 stars ... but i must admit i thought the timming on film 1 was terrible ... i thought you lost a lot of the humorous IMPACT because the gags moved too quickly without enough build up ... the second one with the levitating lemming was just plain sweet .. it doesnt get much better than that .

10-08-2006, 02:05 PM
AWESOME! The two movies were so fun and well done. Definite 5 stars :D:thumbsup:

10-08-2006, 04:01 PM
Haha, great stuff! :D :D It looks so nice!! I love the face he makes at the end of film 1, that was hilarious.

10-08-2006, 04:11 PM
realy cool animation, render, comp , ... just all is perfect!

how much time take on making this incredible work??

10-08-2006, 10:42 PM
BRILLIANT! absolutely amazing. haha. i've been watching it over and over again. i just can't get enough. bravo!

10-09-2006, 01:40 AM
Just awesome and funny as hell! :bounce:

10-09-2006, 01:57 AM
Is it wrong that the first thing I thought was 'why doesn't it have a blue sweater and green hair?' :)

Excellent work :)

10-09-2006, 03:55 AM
So totally amazing an idea:D!!

Great work!

I won't look at cute little animals the same way again :D

10-09-2006, 07:25 AM
Again, im completley overwhealmed with the reply from you guys.

Jadetiger, Yeah guess so, we're not allowed to show tobacco and alcohol ads in Norway, but exploding lemmings are ok. Go figure :)

Loulu79, i understand what you're saying, but i guess the point got a little less obvious in the english version than in the original Norwegian version. But atleast its not the cables that are triggering it :)

blue magic, i can relate to the timing issues youre mentioning, as we had waaay to much stuff happening way to fast. But we only had 30 seconds. And thats why the second one had more "story" to it, since the premise of exploding lemming were set :)

martindisenio, thanks! the project was completed over a two month period with 5 people going on and off the project.

Super thanks for the support guys!

10-09-2006, 09:23 AM

10-09-2006, 02:55 PM
Is anyone else finding it extremely difficult to download these two movie clips? I've been tyring for hours and it keeps pausing halfway through the download and doesn't resume. I've tried with both IE and Firefox.

10-09-2006, 02:57 PM
Very very funny! I like it alot! really great work!

10-09-2006, 03:26 PM

10-09-2006, 04:21 PM
I added a mirror to the films if anyone is having problems.

10-09-2006, 04:24 PM
That is hillarious! I'm sure "onecall" made lots of money.

Wow , great work, especially loved the water/hamster close up at the end of the second one, cause it looked really realistic. Good work.

10-09-2006, 06:30 PM
I added a mirror to the films if anyone is having problems.

Awesome, much better, thanks! Oh, and brilliant work.....really good stuff!

10-09-2006, 06:56 PM

10-10-2006, 03:34 AM
I just scrubbed through and watched the exploding lemmings frame by frame. Frickin' hilarious. That one guy's head gets stuck on the desk. Horrible yet too funny.

10-10-2006, 10:04 AM
Hehe, I loved watching this aswell ;) Think I played it on repeat for half an hour :P
Also loved the nostalgia Error Press play on tape ;)
Oh, and all your base are belong to us :P

Congrats from a fellow norwegian cg geek

10-11-2006, 02:14 PM
very funny stuff, it looks good and the character design works well.

the set up for the end gags are a nice touch to a very good idea.

great stuff.

10-12-2006, 12:33 AM
Ha ha great man! Viva the lemmings!

10-12-2006, 07:50 PM
I concur. Excellent animation and design work. Not sure if I'd want that type of commercial for my product though. I doubt it would go over well in the states. Surprising, in light of how violent our culture is.

10-13-2006, 03:45 AM
very good idea and very funny.

10-24-2006, 01:46 PM
Just noticed this from the CGtalk newsletter...

Hilarious!!! Love the character designing and the character behavior and animatics. Those Lemmings are short-fused... LOL!

Awesome work Theotheo!!!

10-24-2006, 02:29 PM

10-27-2006, 08:00 AM
Incredible work, love it! A big jump for my heart! Lemmings that explode, the big poster of Giana sisters, remind me very good time!!! The addition of the one of Chuck Rock would be the perfection! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!
It's one of the best work I ever see, love the mood and the final composition!
Keep it up, now it's time to make a little TV serie =P

10-27-2006, 10:16 AM
I have to be honest. This is quite disturbing...as it is still little furry animals that I had as a child. in any case, love the overall look and animation. Good work.

10-27-2006, 07:07 PM

10-27-2006, 11:19 PM
