OK, here's our first logo concept. The "O" is suppose to represent the seven chambers, and the "person" in the middle, humanity. We've not yet read the whole book, so revisions will probably follow...

But you need to upload an image... hehe :bounce:

– Well done, we are on the way!

BRILLIANT LOGO! cool star!

Another concept to set the mood...

Your in for a busy december. :) I like the logo it looks good. look forward to seeing some more updates.

10-11-2006, 12:18 PM
Hey cool logo Henrik! Funny, first I thought it vas some silk drapery in the back there.:)

Really nice with that face!

My only concern is that the N looks a little light on the right side there…. Looks a little lump sided maybe.

The best of luck to you friend!!

10-11-2006, 04:34 PM
Very clever logo - and the face backdrop is working real well. Looking forward to see where this goes.

lycka till! :)

Yup. December is our crunch period. We're currently three people working on this project. The main problem is that we all have a full time job and doing this in our free time. :D

10-12-2006, 01:15 PM
nice suit design. The logo is great! Keep it up!

10-12-2006, 08:26 PM
Our angle is to turn things around. We want to show the events from "stoners" pespective. Concepts tomorrow...

10-12-2006, 08:30 PM
Temporary score...

10-12-2006, 08:35 PM
nice. i love the logo and suit design. the music is nice, but the piano and fading out seems a bit unnessecary...otherwise, great project so far!

10-12-2006, 10:57 PM
now that has to be one of the best cartoon pic i have seen in a long time

10-13-2006, 12:10 AM
Ahh there's more than one of you. You'll be fine then.

10-13-2006, 07:06 AM
I like the music - especially the "limping" feel - very good.
A bit hesitant about the character though - seems a little bit cartoony to match the logo and the music, but hey - I can be wrong.
Kul med ett så starkt svenskt team i startfältet :)

I'm having problems getting this dolly/crane-shot right. Comments please...

I think you should just make it slower. That's pretty much the only thing i can think of. And a little less stopping. ;)

10-14-2006, 10:43 AM
Think you should pull out more slowly and stay on one side of the train.
Now you are going back and forth behind the train as you pull out, and it gets confusing.
Especially at this speed.

But rendered out ant timed right this will be a great way to show the grand scale of things.

:surprised I don't know how i miss this one. Concept seems to be simple clear and i love your way to get out in the pentagon shape ! nice trailer start ! good luck to you 4 guyz !

10-17-2006, 08:27 PM
I like the look of your last update. How the "hole" follows the the shape of the "e". Very impressive.

10-18-2006, 03:23 AM
Great start! I see lots of brainstorming going on....uve read the book? :)

10-18-2006, 06:10 AM
:) Yea, one of us have read the whole book, me and Henrik are allmost done! And I don't know how I've missed that book before ... but you live to learn.

10-18-2006, 07:34 AM
Oh ya....you guys are a team!....i was wondering where all those names on the teaser poster come from!

Im subscribing already!.....:bounce:

good luck guyz!

10-18-2006, 03:19 PM

OK. This is a pre-viz of Patricias first encounter with the singularity. A note though: The concepts for what the friggin thing is gonna look like, aren't done yet...

"...stretching off to its own vanishing point, not in a straight line and not in a curve, not moving and not standing still." (How the heck do U bring that to the screen!?

Aaanyhoo... Enjoy.

10-18-2006, 03:40 PM

OK. Our sound guy is on board now. This is his first go at the score. Hope U like...

10-18-2006, 03:43 PM
AGAIN GREAT LOGOS...I cant choose one! They are all brilliant designed! the idea to go form hexagon to the lecters a is very interesting and looks cool!

10-18-2006, 06:24 PM
loving the new music. im having trouble getting ideas for the singularity too...but i think your's captures it dead on. its very simple. just perfect.

10-19-2006, 09:10 AM
about the music...i agree with mitchelhunt!

10-19-2006, 09:48 PM
Great score. Has a real cinematic, almost epic quality to it (which fits the novel perfectly).

10-21-2006, 05:50 AM
Like a lot of ur ideas so far. And it's especially nice to see an all Swedish team as well!

I really liked the music score so far, but I’m missing a nice crescendo.

This would give u an idea of what I mean (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pzSR6JkZeuc)
(the music is from the Battlestar Galactica series intro)

10-24-2006, 08:16 AM

10-24-2006, 12:54 PM
Wow, your team has certainly accomplished a lot. I really enjoyed the storyboards and how they're tied together with the hexagon theme.

For the train shot, I thought maybe there was a little too much moving around. Perhaps one long, smooth shot moving out the window and panning up to see the entire chamber would work and be just as effective without the sharp moves up and across? Just a thought.

I like the concept art fo the apple. You guys are really coming along on this. Looks great.

10-25-2006, 02:46 AM
I just saw that hair test and I must say I feel a little intimidated. Lol. Looks cool, oh I really liked the scene in the singularity. Very atmospheric. Geez you guys are making me work hard just trying to keep on par. The hair has a very macguyver feel to it, but that suits a book that was written in the 80's, I'm really enjoyig watching you guys work and look forward to seeing your posts. I actually preferred the first apple concept you have but I think that it should be slightly longer from the hand guard down to the business end. Even for a Bullpup design it's kinda short. All round really nice stuff.

10-25-2006, 06:27 PM
Thanks T. The hair was really just a dynamics test. The final look will be nicer. Although McGuyver rocks!:D

10-25-2006, 07:30 PM

Different concepts and doodles for the v\stol. By Peter.

Cool V/STOL design!

10-27-2006, 05:02 PM
Great concept stuff by Peter. I think the second one down on the lefthand side below the Boeing Bell is my favourite. It has a nice, sleek look to it.

I tried watching the test videos you posted earlier, but for some reason they wouldn't play for me. It could just be my system perhaps, but I wonder if anyone else is having the same trouble? The loader page opens up fine into your portfolio, but the actual videos don't play at all (none of them, actually; and I even got an error message for one). I'll keep trying a few things on my end, but I thought I'd better mention it just in case something is up with the server.

I watched and listened to the early posts here few days ago and all worked fine.
I'm now having fun viewing all Eon threads but this is the only one where I can get nothing to play , so I doubt it's a codec issue.....

OK. I've used the wrong uploader as well. That's why all the videos r in my portfolio. As to why they're not working, I don't know.
Now, I won't upload all the flvs again with the CGChallenge Uploader, but instead the next major post will be our animated storyboard, and then the final pre-viz.
I'll leave the flvs in my portfolio, hopefully they'll start working again.

Over and out/Henrik

10-30-2006, 02:50 PM
That last video worked fine for me. Looks good. I like the mirror effect on the flaw. Very close to how I pictured it in my head when reading the book. I hope your other vids start working for you, but if you're posting a pre-viz soon I guess we'll get to see them all anyway. :)

10-31-2006, 04:24 PM
Hey, your vids are working again!

Some really nice stuff there. My favourite was the runner. I thought the motion on that one was spot on. I listen to your temporary sound track again as well. I think you've come up with a fantastic score. Very moody.

Can't wait to see how it all comes together.

Wow! You've been busy.

Let's see, first, very nice test animation by Victor. I loved the "flight" through the tunnel/bore out into space (still enjoying that hexagon theme in this one). Nice work with the nuclear blasts going off on Earth too. One comment: I notice it looks slightly one-sided at this point, with the USA getting most of the bashing (I can point that out because I'm Canadian so it's not being defensive :) ).

Great models. And Vue continues to impress me.

I think the revised train clip is much better. It's moves really smoothly and provides a nice shot of the wider setting. Great job!

Hey nice work mate. Love the nuclear blasts the really look cool. The story boards are easy to read I think they will transfer well to film. Keep it up.

In case we would like to show a Frant. I know that the legs should be shorter, but hey - artistic freedom :-)

11-04-2006, 09:31 PM
Your animations look promising for sure.

11-04-2006, 09:40 PM
Head of the frante is really cool, Feet are a bit simple and disproportionate for me, but is someone know the shape of alien feet? answer: ... none! and they're not describes in the book, so. :)
I'm impatient to see The frante move.

very nice very nice, and stron progress ;)
frante is great and the animation test are promising a lot just hope you'll make it till the end

That was outstanding! I just watched it five times in a row, if that tells you anything. Really, really well done. It flows beautifully, good pacing, and the music is perfect. I especially liked the shot of the two jets flying out over the cityscape. What a great shot.

No crits from me on this one. I can't wait to see you put it all together. Great job.

11-07-2006, 01:20 PM
Very nice. I just saw your rough cut and I'm Impressed. Has a very apocolyptic feel and the music suits that perfectly. Good job.

I want to see more!

11-08-2006, 05:39 PM
That second cut is pretty good. It was nice to see more of the pre-viz footage in there too. But I admit I liked the musical arrangement in the first cut a little better. It had that great build toward the end, and then dropped down just after the logo fades out. The timing worked really well. Still, they're both outstanding choices. I'm sure you'll make it work whichever way you go.

Had nothing to do (joke) but I've allways wanted to do a TUTORIAL of some kind and why not post one here. Did a test last night for this challange, just to see how much we could animate with still images. It's the opening scene with the guys on the Balcony (not the last one that Henrik did, this one has not been showed. We will not use this one in our final trailer.

It's nothing fancy but more a inspirational thingi ... well check it out and tell us what you think! CITY TUTORIAL (http://www.bombim.com/city-tutorial/)

heh, what i mean "studio" in my particular case -is 20 sqr m rented room on 2nd floor , lot of papers ,cd's , books opened on references pages and that sort of things all around my desk which is quite messy too. I can guarantee You Galaktor You wouldn't be that impressed- as a matter of fact I am not even that brave to share a photo of it with you guys .
but still it is my "studio" ;)

@Peter - nice tutorial there. Bit overdone with street lights, but this kind of work help you a lot I guess.

Yea, I overdid the lights. I did it as a kind of sketch to have something to animate and test on. But it was fun doing the tutorial, made me wanna do more.

Oweron - Nice illustrations and models in your gallery, like your style a lot :-)
Have a nice weekend.

Yeah, my "studio" is the corner of the room in my home office where my computer sits. :)

Thanks for posting the pics guys. They were great. And my hat off to Peter for that tutorial. I really appreciated you sharing your work like that. I, for one, found it to be very well done and a terrific learning experience (I don't have After Effects (yet) but it gave me some ideas to try in Mirage). Many thanks!!!

We have started to model all scenes for the trailer. This test I did to test the displacements and textures for the train scene. Base model in Modo, displacement and texture in ZBrush and then back to Modo for more details and the final render. Think I need a litte more defenition in the rocks. But it will be a moving shot and from distance so maybe not. Why can't you animate in Modo, why ...

First V/STOL 3D model. No textures yet, just basic materials from Modo. Gonna change the cockpit and add some more textures and details.

11-14-2006, 10:57 PM
like the storyboard very nice and dinamic solid starting point I like it :)) very intersting...yeah nice ambient for work and ideas you have there. :) ok let see some updates

11-23-2006, 02:05 AM
I kinda like the teaser poster! It really does give some depth into what you see from the storyboards and designs.

The V/STOL design reminds me of the Terminator 1 and 3 - HK's a bit...
non-theless, nice conversion. :)

Just wanna show you some progress. We're currently into heavy modelling and texture. Anyway, these are the untextured models for Patricia and Lanier. First version anyway...

11-24-2006, 12:40 AM
Very nice, I especially like the hair. Lanier does look a little thin, though. I, at least, imagined him a bit more....I'm not sure if "masculine" is the right word. The Patricia model looks great!

I'm very curious to see them textured!

11-28-2006, 11:21 PM
More great models. It's really getting to the nitty-gritty stuff now. Keep it coming!

Well my homework for this weekend was to learn how do do a head texture. And here it is. This one is rendered in Modo and lacks some obvious details but Henrik will do the rest. For texturing I used Modo for UV's, Zbrush for painting the textures and Photoshop for final touch up.

11-29-2006, 09:54 AM
Very good texturin! i have a lot of problem mapping faces...seem you have none! :)
I like patricia model a lot...very expressive!

Hi again. Nope we are still going strong. But with full time Jobs, kids and what ever time flies! But we are always strong when it comes to tight DeadLines - belive me. This is Paticias suit. First texture test to see how our new work flow. The model is made by Henrik in Max, then I did the UVs and base texture in Modo (no Zbush this time) but most job is done in Photoshop mostly because I know so well. Now lets see if Henrik is able to get it all assembled in Max. See you soon - 42 days left! /peter

12-04-2006, 02:39 PM
GOSH! cool texturing...i did't see any deformation on it!! 42 days...time is slipping away uh!?Keep it up guys! looks like you are on the right way!!!

We decided to make the minister a bit more alien looking. Concept by Peter, modelled by Henrik.

12-06-2006, 08:13 AM
I decided to check back here after a while of not coming to the boards and I have to say this is looking really great! I would be so intimidated if I was still in the competition. This is really pro stuff.

12-06-2006, 08:41 AM
you've got great models here! your frant is lovely and the minister is simply perfect to me ! remind me a little a few a man of the trading federeration in starwars !
I just think Lanier could have a more masculine look.
Good luck to you and your team !

Very nice animatic. This is all starting to get very exciting!!!

I'm really fascinated by that panoramic matte painting. I've never actually seen one done before. I assume the camera pans from left to right as the V/STOl "flies by." I'd love to know some of the basic principles behind doing such a painting. For example, I see there's a mountain more or less at the transition point from one direction to another; is that sort of thing something that should always be included?

Great work!

Looking forward to see your full trailer.

01-07-2007, 09:53 PM
that shot looks great, the one thing i would say is that the eyeball dosnt look wet enough, it needs a bit more goo in my opinion. other than that its great and so is the rest of the stuff in this thread. great texturing on the truck.

01-08-2007, 04:49 PM
Those are two beautiful clips, both the shot of the eye and the VSTOL flyby. In the flyby, I did notice that the clouds seem to "jump" or speed up slightly just at the transition point and then settle back to normal speed. But it's still a fantastic shot. I'd love to see a tutorial sometime on how you put that all together (maybe after the challenge is over?).

01-08-2007, 05:57 PM
Wow! Colors are so amazing!!
But you clouds must moves more softly and in accordance with camera motions.

01-08-2007, 06:58 PM
I shall try to put togheter a tutorial but as you say, after the competition. And I also think that the clouds or the whole transition when the Vstol have passed is some what jerkey, maybe I will have some time (not :-) to correct it but as it is now we just want to finish all the scenes. Our motto this week: "Well - looks kind of good... next scene!".

fifty3dragons asked for a tutorial of the Vstol fly by scene and here comes a screen shot of one of the compositions in After Effects. Basically it's a bunch of Photoshop layers witch I have animated just by changing the position as the vstol flies by. This is image 1 of 2.

This is a image of all the different parts. It's not that detailed but I hope you can get inspiration from it. It was fun to do. Our first approach was to do it with camera mapping but we soon realized that we didn't have the proper knowledge a nd time, but maybe next time. You learn something new every day.

This is our version of Olmy. This is where he speaks to the Minister in the beginning of the trailer. Model and texture done in Modo.

Hi again. This is the balcony in the opening scene. Olmy and The minister is to be added later. Rough color adjustment.
Models done in Modo. Texture and render in C4D by Victor.

cool animation! and great use of the plates mixed with 3d..I like a lot Olmy model too.
Is very close as i imagine it.What looks clear looking at this thread is that you seem to have a precise idea of the EON's world.Brilliant.

I like the city see it from top , I like the mood you have in that scene.

Her arm twists a lot 3/4 of the way through the animation when she is running through the light (warm). The rest of it looks great.

01-12-2007, 07:40 PM
Hey, thanks so much to Peter for doing up that tutorial (especially while the challenge is still ongoing)! It was great, and just what I was looking for. A little insight into how it was all put together. Much appreciated!!!

That's a great shot of Patricia running. I noticed the arm thing too. Just something about the way it turns as it goes from the light into shadow or something (or maybe it's the lighting itself that makes it look a bit strange). I wonder too if maybe her mouth closed slightly at some point if it would add a little expression to her face.

I really like that balconey shot. Is some of the city cloned/generated, or did you placed every building manually?

Looking great!

01-12-2007, 07:49 PM
Good eye there Wade. I watched it again and noticed it is because of the ligthing, maybe make her turn back when she is in the light instead.

01-13-2007, 06:34 PM
Your animation don't look bad but I suggest you try to reduce keyframes and put them in the points when the character change evidentely the position. It could look better. Good luck!

01-13-2007, 07:05 PM
To spire: You're right, but due to time issues, I used a motion capured file and layered some animation on top of that. Normally I would hand key the animation.
To blueglitch: The arm isn't actually twisting. Its a trick of the light as fiftydragons pointed out. But U may be right. Maybe it looks weird. But unfortunatly no time to change it.

Thanks for your comments all!

Yeaahh!! man. The frant rocks!!!
We have a similar shot but your is better!!! :D

01-22-2007, 11:02 PM
I agree with The Shift! The frant kicks A$$!

01-23-2007, 12:12 AM
I love the Frant clip the only thing that concerns me about it though is that, that little portion makes the Frant look evil when they are anything but. However I relize this is just an extremely small portion so I'll just shut up now and again say that it looks great!

01-23-2007, 01:00 AM
Yeah, that's an awesome shot! He does look a little ominous, but I think that's fine for the trailer. You want to grab viewer interest, and that's a great shot to do it. I love how he emerges through the mist like that. Nicely done.

yeah, this was dark (in good way of course). I already can speak about different flavours of trailers in this challenge. So, keep progressing folks  I might have one point here - the explosions on earth are not that clear to understand now, but I guess you are still working on that part.

01-23-2007, 10:52 PM
Really good job with all the action set perfectly to the music. I especially like the drum, very drumatic! Patricia's run, and the way she looks over her shoulder, look extremely nice. Great effects.

01-24-2007, 12:01 AM
Good job, although, I noticed some of the scenes aren't fully rendered or textured. (long pause) Just kidding.... how much more lame can it get. It looks awesome, I really like how it is coming together.

01-24-2007, 05:29 AM
EXCELLANT! That put the Frant in much better context and it worked. It worked VERY well! Forget the earlier comment on him looking 'evil' as I thought I just needed to see him in context.

01-24-2007, 10:36 AM
Cool. This

01-24-2007, 01:23 PM
Looks great.
Yes there is something to do more but i think you'll make it !!!
Music and image is on the level, really nice.

I like the composition so keep on.

01-24-2007, 06:53 PM
I like it very much, the beginning of the video get's my hear up!

01-24-2007, 11:09 PM
Wow, what a great job your team is doing! That's really come together very well. The music and overall pacing are especially well done, in my opinion. It has a very nice "feel" to it. And the finished version will be that much better! Keep going!

01-26-2007, 11:31 AM
This looks really good!!! The only thing I noticed was that at some point (when the part comes where Patricia is running) the pace of music and film differ a bit. Not in a sense of sync, but somehow I think the musik should pace up a good bit when the "action" starts. Know what I mean? Faster, more drive. Of course, it could work different / better in your final version...but that's just my opinion from what I've seen.

hehehe! Good model by the way! The anatomy looks fantastic! Expecially on the shoulders/back...

01-27-2007, 12:40 AM
The beginning is more impressive then final part.
Why you are using black frame between frame with Earth and eye? Maybe cross dissolve would be better?

01-28-2007, 07:58 AM
It seems to work pretty well. Was it a mistake with the gravity?

01-28-2007, 02:19 PM
Ha! Maybe he thought someone yelled "Cut!" and was too hot under the coat so decided to disrobe.

I guess you could claim it's a "costum malfunction." That's seems to be going around these days. It's a great looking model though, and very nice cloth effects. At least he still had his boots on. :)

It may be just me for some reason, but I couldn't actually hear anything on your "Initial Semi-Final Sound" post. The audio on the last entry (Sound FX and Voice Dub) played fine.

The render is looking great though. Those models and that texture/skin is fantastic. This one's going to be very good. Best of luck in the final hours!

Phew! We've reached the end. The completion. The grandfinale!
This is our final version of the trailer. It's been painful, educational and fun. For us (believe it or not) this was our first attempt at a production of this scale. We have all dabbled in 3D and 2D animation and visualisation for some time, but this project contatined many firsts. Thanks for all your comments and support!

OK, some specs;
The following hardware was used: Vic, Pete and Jörgen worked on Macs, Henrik on PC:s of differnt configs.

Congrats guys!!! your trailer works very well.
The fire wall in the patricia shot is wicked cool and the sound track made a fantastic mood too.
And last but not list...the video interference on the final logo its a very stylish touch.

Bravi!!

01-31-2007, 08:06 AM
Great job, that alien saying "Are they organized?" is my favorite! Intense. What's the story behind that voice?

01-31-2007, 08:50 AM
UserBrain - Thanks :-) The voice of "the Minister" is the famous Swedish actor me. It is recorded here in our office in the little room of Henrik L (because he's the boss he have his own corner office). Then me and Jörgen messed it up in Soundtrack Pro, don't remember wich filters that was used but one of em was "Voice transformer" or something.

How did you encoding your FLV? Which software? it looks so sharp and clean!!:)

Great trailer! Really awesome! This is a very nice piece of work your team has produced.

I especially liked the shuttle crash. In all your earlier posts I've been wondering what that was going to look like, and it blew me away. Very nice job. And the music again is wonderful, one of my favourite soundtracks in the whole challenge. The way it drops off at the end there with the logo, just perfect.

I'm also looking forward to your behind-the-scenes stuff and tutorials. If you're taking requests, I'd personally love to see something on the texturing of various characters (Olmy and/or the Frant) and also a breakdown of how that cityscape seen in the opening shots was modelled. :)

Congratulations on putting together such a great entry!!!

Looking just great, really nice composition and image.
So, i think you have done really good looking trailer and i think you'll be near the contest winners.

Good luck.

Mmmm very very nice i like it, the mood is very nice bravo :bounce:

02-10-2007, 10:34 PM
Looks nice, but I'm not sure why the shuttle crashing was the Pelican (http://www.bungie.net/images/games/Halo/gallery/renders/stills/still_06.jpg) from Halo?

02-11-2007, 01:47 AM
Umm, yea! In all it was rather nice looking stuff... up untill to the point of the craft crashing.
I agree with 'flamingbs' with this one - the craft has a startling reseblence to the "Pelican" in "Halo", maybe too much for my taste.
Everything else is original, why is that small item different?
I'm confident that you could have fixed something that looks little less like the "Pelican".
- Or is this simply a fluke? Are you familiar with "Halo" at all?

02-13-2007, 09:04 PM
Well the only one of us that have been playing HALO 1 on Xbox is me but it is Henrik that did this scene and I the SFX in the end. I must say that I don't recall this from Halo, but then again, space ships that crasch inside meteorites probably would behave like this :-).
Thanks for the comments by the way, we shall investigate this more hehe.

03-22-2007, 08:49 AM
Our team would like to congratulate all the winners on a superb job.
This was one heck of a ride, fun and we learned a lot.
