First, thank you to all of you that made it out to our fourth annual MetroCAF event last week. I suspect those of you that made it would agree that it is worth waiting a whole year for. Over 500 attendees got to see the absolute best in student animation from metropolitan-area colleges. Second, we have a late-breaking event that we wanted to be sure all of you heard about before it was too late.
We've very fortunate to have been invited to collaborate with Pratt Institute and their Department of Digital Arts on an exciting event coming up this week. We apologize for the short notice but we thought that since it was such an interesting event, regardless of how much lead time we had, perhaps you'd be able to re-arrange your Thursday night schedule to fit it in. And, for you Brooklynites, this is the first time in a long time that we'll be hosting an event in your neck of the woods.
This Thursday, October 5th, at 7:00PM, Pratt Institute and NYC ACM SIGGRAPH are proud to present "The Making of 'Superman Returns'". The event will be held at Pratt Institute's Main Brooklyn Campus. The exact location is the Department of Digital Arts, ARC Building, Lower Level, Room E-2. Complete travel directions can be found on our web site at nyc.siggraph.org (http://nyc.siggraph.org/) or at this link off Pratt's web site: http://www.pratt.edu/campus/directions (http://www.pratt.edu/campus/directions).
Stan Szymanski, Senior Vice President of Digital Production at Sony Pictures Imageworks®, and John Monos, Computer Graphics Supervisor for the movie "Superman Returns", will be our guests for the evening.
Stan Szymanski will discuss motion capture used in the feature animation "Monster House", computer graphics in the feature animation "Open Season" and other visual effects at Sony Imageworks. Szymanski supervises the overall direction and day-to-day operation of digital production, the largest department at Imageworks. His department includes computer graphics supervisors and digital artists of all types. Imageworks has grown significantly during Szymanski's tenure, creating the visual effects for films such as "The Polar Express," "Spider-Man 2," "Big Fish," "Bad Boys II," "The Matrix Reloaded," "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone," "Cast Away," and others. Before joining Imageworks, Szymanski was director of operations for Pacific Ocean Post, where he supervised the digital film division and line produced the digital postproduction of over 200 visual effects shots on "Independence Day," winner of the Academy Award for visual effects in 1996. John Monos will discuss his work in the movie "Superman Returns" and his career path from Pratt to Sony Imageworks.
Imageworks has been recognized by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Science with nominations for its work on "Spider-Man," "Hollow Man," "Stuart Little" and "Starship Troopers" and was awarded an Oscar® for Achievement in Visual Effects for its work on "Spider-Man 2" and for Best Animated Short for the CG animated film "The ChubbChubbs!"
Admission for this event for everyone is free. Our very special thanks to Peter Patchen and Pratt Institute for their support of this event
