View Full Version : Sugar Rush, short by Guillermo Careaga

Hi everyone! I graduated from Ringling School of Art and Design this past May, and I had meant to post my animated short months ago but I just didn't have the chance. Here it is though (you need the DIVx codec to see it):

10-02-2006, 05:31 PM
Hey guillermo, looks great, some crispy looking animation there. Keep it up. 5 stars

10-03-2006, 02:51 AM
Guillermo, your film is beautifully animated and really funny, it's one of my favorites. So very inspiring.

10-03-2006, 03:10 AM
That was absolutely FABULOUS!!! I hope someone gets this up on the frontpage, and I hope that you snag an amazing job with it! (Be sure to tour the festivals with it as well).

My only gripe was that there were a couple of times when the music could have been mixed together a little more smoothly......twice there was a point when one song literally stopped and another song came in, and that sounded awkward. Otherwise it's top notch! The animation blew my mind!

10-03-2006, 03:24 AM
Wow, that was fantastic! Really nice animation and great facial expressions and poses. I loved the story too, I think most of us can relate :)

Hope you get the credit you deserve, good luck!

10-03-2006, 03:43 AM
OMG that's awsome. Nice job!!!

I agree... FrontPage this!

I especially liked the running on all fours bit.

Congrats and goodluck!

10-03-2006, 09:57 AM
congratulations on a very impressive short! front page, i agree!

10-03-2006, 10:29 AM

wow, that was a great little short. great animation. nice and smooth. very entertaining, well done. no crit from me. well done.

by the way, from start to finish, how long did it take you?

10-03-2006, 03:10 PM
Thanks everyone! I haven't really had a chance to show my short to people outside my school, so it's great to hear the opinions of those who have never seen it and have no previous knowledge of it. I really appreciate the comments.

ivanisavich- You're right about the music transitioning so abruptly. I had placed some scratch audio just to get the feel for it, hoping that I would go back to it later and fix it. Only "later" became "never" as the animation took away most of my time. =)

p0rcupine- I'm not sure why you're not able to download the movie. Last time I checked, the link worked. Weird. It does need DivX to play though.

save often- I think this was in production for a total of 7 or 8 months, if I remember correctly.

10-03-2006, 09:58 PM
Hey Guillermo

Nice mork man. You may remember me--I interviewed you at Ringling and then met up with you when you were visiting Matt and Jim at Shaba. Anyway, nice work (but you know that already) and enjoy that new gig

Front page...

10-03-2006, 10:32 PM
wonderfull. besides the good animation i also love the character. very cool!

10-04-2006, 05:14 AM
Hey Guillermo,

Yet again, another Ringling school student has created a wonderful piece. One thing that'll never cease to amaze me is how almost every student from Ringling has both strong animation and story-telling in his/her film..maybe its the Jim McCampbell factor :) The animation is truly fluid, and the poses read so well. This is indeed Front Page material. ***** from me dude...Keep it up!

10-04-2006, 11:14 AM
fantastic. fantastic. fantastic.
especially the story :)

5 stars. frontpage

10-04-2006, 11:38 AM

definitely one of the best student reels i've seen. saw this at siggraph and was the best one at the ringling booth. the personalities that were conveyed are just amazing. Lots of character and professional quality of animation. Just too bad certain features aren't at this level. best of luck my friend but i'm sure you're already working at a big studio.

10-05-2006, 08:17 AM
can't see. page doesn't open. may be some problem from my side as everybody else is able to see. neway best of luck.

10-05-2006, 08:24 AM
Really great work, man. Just spectacular. My favorite part was easily the flip on the treadmill. This goes in my inspiration folder.

10-05-2006, 09:20 AM
absolutely inspiring, fabulous colours and.. animation is perfect.. direction rocks too. i agree with ivanisawich about music.

good luck, dude.

10-05-2006, 06:14 PM
Hi Guillermo,

I have seen lots of animation reels and i mean LOTS of, but man yours is amazing. I dont know why i just keep watching it again and again and again. Everything is perfect.
Nice follow-through and expressions. Your animation Really is catchy. Why is this short not on front page?????
Only request - KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK. :applause:

10-05-2006, 09:43 PM
Why didn't this make front page? Or maybe I missed it?

It's excellent!

10-06-2006, 09:24 AM
Great work!!! So much personality and character. A wonderful battle of temptation!!!

10-07-2006, 11:21 AM
Very slick animation and final project. I totally agree it should've been up on Frontpage already! So I'm doing it now ;) Well done and good luck.

10-07-2006, 11:58 AM
very lovely bit of work. I love the small characteristics that build it up, such as the little ear flicks when he licks his lips. I would love to see more of your work. Oh and congrats on the front page.

10-07-2006, 11:59 AM
I canīt see that either... Maybe somebody could mirror it?

10-07-2006, 12:59 PM

Fun, energetic piece of work here. Nice concept and animation. Congrats!

10-07-2006, 02:20 PM
lol, sweet animation and music too mate

well done

10-07-2006, 02:27 PM
That was so fun I had to add my congratulations. Such a great, fun animation you have there. Good job.:bounce:

PS I do have one question...why would they have a chocolate bar and candy machine located in a workout area? That just seems evil.

10-07-2006, 03:47 PM
PS I do have one question...why would they have a chocolate bar and candy machine located in a workout area? That just seems evil.

i thought they are not real. they are his imagination and fear, which he is trying to overcome.

10-07-2006, 04:02 PM
 i have seen it before...some where i dont remember:)..thats so great one.Congratulations

10-07-2006, 05:37 PM
ehrr... can you put a mirror?? i canīt see anything

10-07-2006, 05:39 PM
Wow, this was completely unexpected. Thanks so much everyone for the encouraging words!!

agreenster -Yeah, Adam, I remember you. Hope everything it going great at Shaba, and thanks!

Cadinho, yolao- I'm not sure why you guys can't download the movie. I guess the server slows down at times? Maybe if you try again in a little bit? Sorry about that.

MSmith -this is totally based on reality! There's a YMCA in Sarasota, Florida where they have not one, but two vending machines full of candy and soda. The irony of that was the inspiration for the short. =) I agree that it's evil.

10-07-2006, 06:07 PM
Heh, I can stand near the admissions office and stare at the huge plasma TV for hours watching your short, they are still playing it =)

10-07-2006, 07:06 PM
Ahhh... the temptation of sweet little yummy things. Great animation! The facial expression, squatch and stretch, everything. The lip quiver is a wonderful touch. Great job! Five stars.

10-07-2006, 07:15 PM
Guillermo! nice to see you make frontpage :3

10-07-2006, 07:40 PM
so amazing and original ... thais animation and the expressions are awesome ...
the king of that animation is the story & concept ...
congrats for the FP

10-07-2006, 08:07 PM
Oh, that was hilarious - made my day. :)

10-08-2006, 12:16 AM
That was SWEEEEET!!! totally loved it. :buttrock:

One little nitpick is I thought when the character was rushing and trying to reach for the red button, that part was getting more intense while music wasn't really. I only wished that the music intensified there as well.
Would have been cool if the vending machine was almost dancing to the beat when chasing the main character too. That way it feels like the candy machine is more dominant or more in control. Well, just my 2 cents and very minor stuff IMHO.

Anyways, awesome job, love the short. :applause:

10-08-2006, 12:48 AM
G'job Guillermo. Be Proud.

10-08-2006, 01:02 AM

This is great. The animation is top notch. I really sympathize with the character because candy does the same thing to me. :)

How long did this take you to finish?

10-08-2006, 01:44 AM
I am trying to lose some weight too, so I felt her pain.

It was great; I haven't seen something this funny for sometime now.

10-08-2006, 01:53 AM
The character was just ooooozing with character for every single shot. Awesome! So well done.

10-08-2006, 02:31 AM
congratulations on this great piece. its truly inspirational.
but if you get the chance, ask someone to work on the soundtrack, then it would be perfect.

10-08-2006, 07:59 AM
link is broken, cant see it here!

10-08-2006, 08:42 AM
As I've said before, everything about this piece is simply beautiful. It all works so well together. The animation, the story, the humor, the music, shots, color, sound... It's all there. Glad to see it on the front page Guillermo.

Whats hard to believe is that this entire piece (like all Ringling shorts) take 8 months from start to finish. To pull off this kind of quality in such a short amount of time is amazing.

10-08-2006, 01:17 PM
beautiful animation  love the frightened expression

for all, who can't seem to download / view the animation, i uploaded a mirror on my webspace (

10-08-2006, 01:56 PM
Excellent work! Loved the variety and the story. 5*

10-08-2006, 03:17 PM
I was cracking up all the way. Great work and I'm stoked you made the front page. You deservere it. Animation was great.

10-08-2006, 09:16 PM

10-08-2006, 10:55 PM

10-09-2006, 04:44 AM

10-09-2006, 11:16 AM
That was fabulous and funny, well done you! Impeccable animation, great character design and striking colour scheme!

10-09-2006, 12:04 PM

Ya man, very nice. Extremely well done. It demonstrated skill in both storytelling and animation which, combined, was a pleasure to watch.

I thought the mirror shot was done well, but my favoryte part was the slap on the wrist. The sound effect really punched up that gag. And as he walks away in a huff.. hehe.. lots of character there.

Congrats on an exellent short.

10-09-2006, 03:09 PM
This animation ROCKS! Awesome work! 5*

10-09-2006, 11:42 PM
Great work! :)
I fell in love with the "jumping poses" in front of the mirror at the beginning of the short. They are REALLY good! :D
It almost made me go "and a one and two, three and four.. " and so on.. Makes me laugh
every time I see it. :D :applause:

Edit: Don't get me wrong.. the rest was really good too. I just got so hung up at the mirror sequense. :)

10-10-2006, 03:32 AM
Slap on the wrist OWNED! Great concept, and really well animated man. PROPS

10-10-2006, 07:48 AM
Totally awesome, really love the character and his animation. Love the walks and jumps :)

Are you working at any studio right now? Did you have any interviews on campus?

That animation made my day :)

10-14-2006, 06:57 PM
Oh wow, that was so hilarious! The animation was terrific also! Great work!!!
I'm watching it again!!

10-23-2006, 03:29 AM
