View Full Version : Modelling a Scene - Looking for Guidance

I came across this image in the link above which I thought would make a great scene in 3D Studio Max. The clock in the scene looks fairly simple to model so I'm going to start with that. What techniques should I use for the Lava Lamp? Since there is liquid inside, do I need to make the glass hollow? I'm not sure if thats needed since the level of the liquid cannot be seen.

Do I need to just use Booleans for the bubbles (subtraction)? Or a simple sphere with similar properties of glass?

What about any do's and don't do's for the goo floating inside?

I'm fairly new to 3D Studio Max so any kind of info to guide me would be great. I'll post my progress here.

I cant see that pic . you would be better off posting it up here using photo buket or some uploader site .

I'd use the max help (F1) and search for blob mesh. They're cool interactive thingies that work just the way lava lamp blobs do. They join together when close and split apart when moving away very organically. Google some tutorials as well maybe?

I would recommed you not to do a lava lamp because there's too many cg lava lamps around in showreels :)
