I have recently been using Maya 7 for a while, following the tutorials on the program. I know someone who is very good at modelling heads, but I get stuck when I try to do it. I have only started with the head shape and thats it because I don't really know where to split the vertices. I am a student in college by the way.
Can you help me with some good head modelling tutorials?

This tutorial I found particularly useful and my technique is very simmiliar. Though it is designed for 3dsmax the methods for modeling it can still be applied to Maya. I would suggest getting Bonus tools for Maya as I found it's target weld is a very useful function when it comes to stitching verts.

At the end it has the final base mesh. You may either try to go with the tutorial or use the wireframe at the end as reference for your box modeling.

Wow, freaky, I actually went through that tutorial myself :) Nice stuff.

If your looking for something free, easy to follow and in Maya head here:

This one is a little bit different but good to follow none the less.

If your looking for further tutorials and dont mind spending a little money, Gnomon do a great head modelling tutorial which is a great place to start. The tutorial is also done in Maya, so it can teach you a bit more about some Maya tools and how you should be using them.

make sure you have good reference and your image planes match up. i usually start with the lips and build out by extruding edges. Gives you a nice radial mouth for animation.
