View Full Version : Blizzard Contest - Starcraft 2

09-18-2006, 09:47 AM
hey guys, finally i made it. Here is the latest version of my blizzard contest entry, hope you like it, and hopefully they will get the entry, i had to send it via email because the server always stopped the upload :(

a zerg attack on a small protoss outpost, i only had the time to create one new unit, i also wanted to create a dedfender shield tank for the Toss, but i had no time due to the release of Paraworld :(

09-18-2006, 10:53 AM
the translation from 2d to 3d is really NICE! well done... It's quite an admirable scene because there are so many different parts. I suspect that whenever Blizzard goes Starcraft 3d, many of the models will be more detailed/textured but your attempt is great!

My comments:
the dragoon (4 legged spider for anyone who doesn't know) needs more work. I think his legs need to be more organic and also more symmetrical on 4 sides.
the zerg units are great, but I miss the 'gross slimey and shiny' parts of em...
On the Nexus, Pylon and Defence Tower I've got nothing to comment at all, marvelously done...

A question though:
The visual effects you see, are they added in Photoshop? and how did you do them =-)

09-18-2006, 12:24 PM
I can agree with some things, especially with the dragoon and that he should be more organic, but he is definitely not symmetrical on his 4 sides. However, Zerg aren't that slimey ( http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a387/hydraliskkiller/starcraft/zerg.jpg ) but i tried my best to get the max direct9 shader to look more slimey but i don't have any controll over the specular level, i can only change the color, and white without beeing pointy enough looked pretty flat. Thanks for the feedback :)

As for the visual effects, yes they are completely done with photoshop, i could have done them with the particle editor of paraworld but i've been too lazy, so i only painted them ;)

09-18-2006, 12:29 PM
Hehe, long time since i played it and maybe my 'in mind reference' is wrong :D And ok, the zerg isn't that slimey or 'fleshy' but the parts that were, like the creep and the buildings, were the things i liked about them, perhaps that's why I just want to see it ;)

09-18-2006, 01:31 PM
great job, Neox!
Really, I did not expect someone doing complex in-game scene ;)
Very nice.
And it is well saturated; eye candy indeed.
I just find a pylon and dragoon a bit distorted from camera`s point of view,; however, when rendered separately they seem to be fine.
good luck with ur submission!
I had same problems as u did, but i blame myself for not using email for submission :(

09-18-2006, 01:45 PM
this is not bad at all! :)
My only crit is I think a star craft battlefield is more chaotic, hehe :P

09-18-2006, 03:01 PM
soo nice. now just lets hope they get the email:)

09-18-2006, 06:46 PM
You're insanse.. I can't believe you pulled it off! That's such a GRAND scale of work. Very nicely executed.. I'd like to play this right now. :) So were the Zerg artillery inspired by Starship Troopers? ;)

09-18-2006, 07:11 PM
now to send this 'screenshot' to some friends to freak some people out... great work man!

09-18-2006, 08:45 PM
That turned out awesome Neox! You really went ALL OUT on that. Thanks for sharing in the PC forum.

09-19-2006, 12:28 AM
Excellent work.

At first I thought it was the real deal..

09-19-2006, 02:54 AM
looks very nice indeed.

09-19-2006, 03:21 AM
 nice~~!!

09-19-2006, 08:57 AM
Although you have executed the assets in a clean and professionall manner, I think you totally missed the exaggerated, stylistic "Blizzard Look".

09-19-2006, 09:28 AM
Although you made very clean and proffessional models, I personally think you missed the exaggerated and stylized "Blizzard look".

09-19-2006, 09:44 AM
well i wanted to catch the feeling of starcraft and not the feeling of WoW or Warcraft3, i'm a big fan of that style but i don't think that it really fits to the starcraft universe :)

09-19-2006, 02:49 PM
this kicks ass, i disagree with the above poster. i think it looks awsome and blizzardy, good job.

09-20-2006, 01:07 PM
great work  ...seems you made a mod for paraworld ;)
i would like to see wires of the characters...i can only see black shapes on the wire view! :)

09-20-2006, 04:14 PM
I also disagree, I think you pretty much nailed the Starcraft style. The "Blizzard Look" does not even exist, it is the "Warcraft Look" and both the Diablo and Starcraft universe look nothing like it. I think you did an outstanding job, modeling that many high quality pieces must have taken quite some effort :D.

09-20-2006, 04:49 PM
Dude... this looks awesome. I want the new star craft now.

09-20-2006, 07:14 PM
looks realy impressive, i like the new unit u have created.

09-20-2006, 09:00 PM
thank you guys :D

i would like to see wires of the characters...i can only see black shapes on the wire view!
as you wish :)

i'll add the other wires later :)

09-20-2006, 10:47 PM
great work and effort, 5 stars. I would love to see the hires meshes.

09-21-2006, 02:01 AM
Although you made very clean and proffessional models, I personally think you missed the exaggerated and stylized "Blizzard look".

no offense but i want whatever drugs you got ahold of this is very much what I would expect from Blizzard.

Great JOB!!!

09-21-2006, 07:27 AM
Great work! Textures looking perfect. Can you show hires models that you used for normalmaps.. ?

09-21-2006, 08:16 AM
hrm let me search, i defintely did some in progress shots but i don't think that i have images of the finished models, i'll upload some later this day :)

here is the terrain

the zergling, didn't go too far, because he only has a small normalmapp, adding to much detail would only cause some sort of noise on him

and a really early version of the head

oh this was my concept, haha pretty crappy :D

opk i currently don't have more, if you want to see the progress, try this folder http://polyphobia.de/nonpublic/muddles/blizz/

@tintin: i'll answer your PM asap :)

09-21-2006, 08:39 PM
you should have send your image at 800000x600000! ...the details are ...awesome :)
Great low polys meshes ...only at the head of the zerg artillery they seem a lil bit much to me.

09-21-2006, 08:51 PM
Excellent.~ 5* from me..

09-21-2006, 09:03 PM
wow. i really like this. it looks so convincing. i really like what you done with the rocks, they look like the trickiest thing to make here. i've never made rocks myself yet, and i hope to keep it that way haha

Good Work.

09-21-2006, 09:21 PM
Supurb. I love those Zerg baddies.... top work Neox.

09-23-2006, 02:18 AM
Great work, the colours are nice too, good contrast from the ground, makes em easier to see in game. :)

09-23-2006, 03:13 AM
I would totally love to see an Open Source version of starcraft come out of this still.

Good Job!

09-23-2006, 03:50 PM
Sexcellent! thats all i can say
Great work and good luck!

09-23-2006, 07:12 PM
Great job, I havent seen many submissions that were actually in a game engine. This looks like it could be a screen shot from starcraft 2, so kudos agian.

09-23-2006, 07:24 PM
Can i / we get an upclose shot of the zealot and dragoon like you did with the zerg? :)

Love what youve done :)

09-24-2006, 03:17 AM
Is Star Craft 2 real?

I only heard about it and have not seen any in game screen shots.

I like the models and the Zergs! :applause:

09-24-2006, 07:27 AM
nicely done-
lots of detail in those textures, and the modeling looks great too.
you really captured the starcraft look, thats for sure.

great work :thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup:

09-24-2006, 11:19 AM
@swiekie: i'll support the project revolution mod with that stuff after the contest is over :)
@oink: as you wish :)

the one highresshot missed on the previous page, the sculpted lowresmesh of the hydralisk

here's the zealot

the pylon
and the nexus

if you want the others too, icould upload them too, but i think the dragoon and the photon cannon are not the best pieces on this :/

@opendut: i dunno there are always rumors, but nothing more since years ;)

@all the others: thank you guys, at least i didn't waste my time on this :D

09-24-2006, 01:32 PM
Wow neox, when I opened the thread I though you posted a screenshot :D

Looks so cool  keep it up

09-24-2006, 01:55 PM
nice work~!!

09-24-2006, 04:26 PM
Seeing the "behind the scenes" makes this even better . I hope it got thru the e-mail jam.

09-24-2006, 05:13 PM
looking great man , i hope that people at Blizzard after looking at this image start working on starcratf 2 :D
good luck in contest

09-25-2006, 09:06 AM
hey steffen!

superb work!
your truely a master of game-designs.

09-30-2006, 02:18 PM
so nice....

09-30-2006, 08:16 PM
that zealot looks so awesome, as does everything else.

10-01-2006, 05:08 PM
been looking at this for a while now... some crits: those zelots look too small! You got to get everything to a respectable porportion... i know in the regular sc things are really fakey but in a cool way.. 3d will be more realistic, so the game will need some work in resizing characters and buildings to get everything to look and feel right again.

10-01-2006, 06:07 PM
if you want the others too, icould upload them too, but i think the dragoon and the photon cannon are not the best pieces on this :/Neox my man, I really think you have to show me that dragoon ;p

What i see looks neat and id like to see more. its on of my other fav units from starcraft. Protoss cripples fighting back for glory. Whats not to like?

Ps: If you dont want to show it here theres always a pm-function. ;)
