I just picked up a Nikon Coolpix 995 from amdv.com for about six hundred bucks. It takes pictures at 2048x1536 pixels, and gives you a lot of control over exposure and aperture settings. I'm not particularly literate when it comes to photography, but I'm having a blast playing with the thing. Here's a test shot I took with it the other night:
This is cropped, but not resampled.
I bought the Coolpix after getting recommendations from both Jeremy Birn and Jeremy Engleman. I also grabbed a 128 meg CF card from newegg.com for $42 . . . it will hold about 160 full-size JPeGs, or 20 uncompressed TIFFs.
