View Full Version : OGL or DX?
I was a longtime Direct X guy with AM. Now (as of v9) it seems on my computer anyway that DX stinks and OGL is kicking butt!
What do you guys use? OGL? DX?

Direct X runs faster on my computer and with less errors.
okay, I guess I'd like to know what kind of GFX card you are using.
My luck with my outdated ATI Mobility Rage M is Open GL.
What was your's for Direct X?

It's a cheap SIS onboard(64mb) video card. I get double the frame rates with DX compared to Opengl.

open GL screws up rotoscopes sometimes on my computer- Gf4ti4400 and YES this is with the best drivers (note I do not necessarily say latest).
What does Hash use in their machines? At one point it was ATI cards, but any more I'm not sure. Anyone know?

I had been an ATI fan for decades, but not anymore.
With the Radeon 8500 I experienced various glitches from mouse lag crashes while modeling to PWS corruption under A:M.
When MSI introduced their Gforce4Ti4400 128m duelhead video card - cheap! I ran out purchased one for my Wintel2000 system and A:M runs near perfect with the MSI/Gforce OpenGL drivers.
A:M is so video card/motherboard/driver sensitive - no wonder so many people have trouble with it.
Funny thing is, I had AM running just fine on a machine with an OLD E&S card, and upgraded it to a Radeon and it didn't work with OpenGL. I uninstalled AM 9.51 and re-installed and now it works NICE! It's an NT machine so I can't test DX8.

Well GeForce 3...
No real speed differens between them in AM8.5 unless going really low poly (don't remeber what the called that setting in AM but one have to hit 'page up' or 'page down' to change it) in witch case the OpenGL was faster.
I do however allways run AM in DirectX mode as the OpenGL setting made AM crash now and then and not did work well with multiple windows.
In other apps OpenGL works very stable and nice so I have not even tried DirectX.
Open GL all the way in V10. They're finally using some of the hardware for acceleration, so it's significantly faster (GeForce4 4600Ti).
V8 was horrible with OpenGL - especially if your card was fairly advanced. It was all software OGL - not using any acceleration - which is pretty much what drove a lot of the instability. When I go back and work in 8.5, I use DirectX....
