View Full Version : Help needed! WIP retro sci-fi matte

I'm doing this matte for a independent short movie. This is my third matte and for that matter I'm pretty pleased with the result so far. I would however need some crits to really finish this. I'm not sure about the bg. The tall building in the middle is really important and one of the key things in the movie so I'd like to hear is there anything off with it. I think it looks a bit 2D... not sure though...
Any ideas how to improve this? A big fat thanks to who replies!

hi elderberry well. I think that big building in the middle does not create a good composition, I can see some buildings at that distance have a really strong dark level, to be in that depth the black level should not be that strong. you're missing all the water highlights
I would do another composition for the back city

I think centre tall building is against lighter sky, if this so dark portion should be slightly more darker in the verticle centre of that bldg. specialy at the top portion.

Keep more of that window highlight in the second image.
The main thing with the composition is that the main building is right in the middle. That brings the whole image down. Try not to place the focal point in middle of the image. Placing it little of center makes more intrusting compositions.
But I suppose you don't wanna change whole city layout :-). For this image just bring back some of the window lights and add more light reflection in the water maybe. And move on another image ;-).
It's very hard (at least for me) to create night cityscapes. You did really good work!

I just want to add that the car looks "squashed" to me.. I don't know.. it might be the perspective..
Otherwise.. I go with the others..

yes I agree with Pavel if you don't want to change the whole layout bringing back some window lights -especially the central dark places of the image- will make this matte better.Anyway good job I like the overall mood and this ill looking greenish color.
