View Full Version : Need a better technique for this particular issue

So I'm working on this jet... and I have a modeling technique problem that I run into once and awhile... and I've never come up with a really good solution.

So here it is in its current state.... pay particular attention to the cockpit window area:

So right now I'm just finishing up the frame and such in low-poly mode ( before I go in and add lots of detail in a smoothed version.

So in that cockpit window, the problem is I want to pin certain corners so they are sharp, but I can't figure out how to do this without introduce slight defects in my surrounding geometry once it is smoothed.

My current solution is this. (

Without the pinning its round. (

So what is the best solution in this situation? If I add a whole edge split along the model in both directions in low poly mode, it alters the landscape of my geometry on the rest of the model... which is something I'm trying to avoid.

How would someone typically handle this? How can I add more data so that I can sharpen my corner without messing up my smooth geometry? I wish I could add a edge to the poly frame in subD mode, and have the option of adding the data where it would maintain the current curvature instead of along the current poly frame. Might there be some sort of script to do this? I know that's one thing that t-splines plugin can do.

I'm going to rebuild the actual cockpit window itself as a separate piece with more detail... and that's not a problem... but I want my corners sharp!

I poked it a couple times and sort of splayed that corner out a little. Although by now I'm sure you have something suitable. But this beats macroeconomics :)

But yeah, to keep a corner "pinched" you essentially bevel that corner. It still smooths out, just over a much smaller area.

Thanks for giving it a shot... that's more or less what I came up with.

Just didn't want to disrupt my nice smooth shell at all if possible... but it seems like its not really possible with polys... or at least harder to execute.

I came up with something ok for now... here's an updated look at my jet
