View Full Version : Hardcore Modeling!: 30 Days, 20 Models: GOLD
08-22-2006, 01:33 PM
-added on Sep 24
Am in..hoping to do 30 models in 30 days.
About the challenge: It was very strange for myself to just decide that I wanna do this challenge in the midst of the workload I already had. I had really loved the concept and I love working to meet impossible deadlines. I felt I could use this challenge to develop and polish my skills making things that I may never have to make in a studio environment. I am basically a character modeler (trying to be :bounce: ) and therefore have not tried or am not much confident about making props and inorganic stuff. Am really happy I jumped in..am enjoying it. Whether I'll get time to do 30 is secondary for now.
About my tool: My fave 3DS Max 8. The same for all models. Renders in mentalray/vray..post in photoshop.
Approach: I plan to use box or poly modeling through out the challenge. I'll try keeping spline extrusion modeling and booleans out of my way for good results after turbosmooth. So choice of models also will be things that have a curvy edge to it. Something that could help me work my line flows and stuff out as well (yeah..even on inorganic models:shrug: just a thought)
Heres my 1st.
#1: Segway (4 hours 40 minutes) and a couple of hours to apply some basic shaders n render tests
About Segway: I wanted to start off with something I havent seen. Segway on the list sounded good. Googled for Segway and I saw this really cool personal mobile. Made this at office freetime (2-3 sessions of it).
08-25-2006, 02:16 AM
Here's my next
#2 Screw (approx 1.5 hours to model..shading extra)
A Shaded trial here..
About Screw: I started off with no definite plan as to how to go about it:shrug:. But I knew a spring primitive could help. I dint want to use boolean though coz I want to use a turbosmooth for tat natural look. took some time figuring it out.. and then it was a breeze. I'm happy with the result. Rendering took a long time to get the effect I wanted.
08-25-2006, 03:47 AM
Heres the next:
(box modeling. no booleans.)
#3 PENCIL (2.15 hours to model. shading and rendering extra)
Front and Side
Top and Bottom
About: Long time since I used a wooden pencil. I went around looking for this wooden pencil (yellow and black) with the eraser at the back..and the only available pencil with the rubber at the back was a camlin flora (it had some flowery prints on it). Anyways bought one and sharpened it with a knife to get a really uneven careless look. The lead looked untouched though from sides. Used tat as reference for the model.
08-25-2006, 07:17 AM
 top work...love the shaded renders of the screw and the pencil
08-26-2006, 03:03 PM
thanks robo dude! ur thread is rocking!!
Here's my next.
#4 Nail ( Roman Crucifixion Nails) (45 mins..shading and rendering extra)
About nails: Crucifixion nails...dreaded stuff. Thought U could use some Zbrush too. Primitive modeling in max plus a lot of rust and wear from zbrush. Finished it in one uninterrupted sitting for the 1st time :)
08-27-2006, 06:41 AM
Here's my next!
#5 GLADIUS (3.45 hours....shading rendering extra)
About Gladius: Am a fan of bladed weapons and I always loved this this..but never knew its proper name. Googled around for reference images and found 2 that I could crossbreed for my make. ref1 (http://cf.geocities.com/legioqc/gladius.jpg) and ref2 (http://i.xanga.com/Dexargile/Gladius.jpg)
Poly modeling..no spline extrusions.
08-27-2006, 04:35 PM
Anish! awesome modeling and rendering..... PENCIL and NAIL is my favourite..... I am sure that the next model is going to be even better.... ALL THE BEST.... GOOD WORK
08-28-2006, 02:41 AM
Thanks Nitin. Am trying..:)
Another one. hmm..This was rather simpler. I might replace it later on with an orcish axe ..if time permits.
#6 AXE (1.20 hours and a lot of time on shading and rendering:D)
Top n Bottom
Front n Back
About Axe: Had actualy collected a lot of very high detailed orcish axe images for reference earlier. But had to settle for this one (owing to 'time' reasons) for which I dint hav a live reference for. This is what I have seen being used in real life. The model was simple and easy..texturing and shadin was tough..used zbrush not for the hero axe, but for the cut tree bark .
08-28-2006, 03:48 PM
Your beauty renders are just beautiful. Are you doing field of focus in 3ds Max or Vray? Can you do something like that with just 3ds Max? Because I dont have Vray.
08-28-2006, 04:03 PM
Depth of field is simulated in Vray. Max, by default, also can simulate depth of field. Just check out the camera parameters. U can even do a quick preview of ur depth of field on the viewport. In there, the more the value u set for samples, the better quality of DOF u get.
08-28-2006, 05:55 PM
nice models!!.......what program are you using?....the details on the Roman Crucifixion Nails are very nice indeed.
08-29-2006, 03:29 AM
thanks binder! I use Max. the nails got a little help from zbrush.
08-29-2006, 02:47 PM
Here's my next.
#7 STOOL (4 hours plus extra shadin and renderin time)
Top n Bottom
Front n Side
in color...(i'm not really happy with this one)
About Stool: Looked like quite a relaxable day at office. Wanted to do something I'd really love to do..something inorganic with an organic feel with respect to modeling. Google gave me this (http://www.periodpiano.com/Stock/images/large/Carvedwalnutstool1.jpg)which I wanted to use as the base reference. Full on polygon modeling...no spline extrusions or booleans.
08-29-2006, 03:00 PM
in color...(i'm not really happy with this one)
WHAT!!??....very good modeling, I'm loving the imperfections you have going there, giving it a "not so perfect as most 3d models tend to look" feel.....lol
08-29-2006, 03:48 PM
I agree with binder.... I think that all your models are looking good... Even the stool (which you don't really like)....
One thing though... on the gladius where did you get your references??... I don't think that that resembles a gladius at all... (sorry I took latin a few years ago and the gladius is the roman battle sword)... that and have you seen Gladiator... he used the gladius alot (like I said it was the roman battle sword).... Though it is a nice sword for sure . Sorry just my 2 cents.. lol
Honestly everything else looks awesome... keep it up
08-29-2006, 04:16 PM
Thanks a lot Binder and morphius_ms..
I was actually talking about the shaded render that I dint like. Just felt I could do better with more time..maybe later. This was my reference (http://www.periodpiano.com/Stock/images/large/Carvedwalnutstool1.jpg) Yeah...I did alter a little on it here and there, but tryin not to kill its aesthetics. (No happy accidents either)
And morphius, I frankly dint know wat a gladius was until i saw it on the list. Just googled around for one and loved every thing i saw. :shrug:Just made one of my choice combining elements from several samples. This (http://cf.geocities.com/legioqc/gladius.jpg) and This (http://i.xanga.com/Dexargile/Gladius.jpg)were the ones I used more for reference. (Both shot up on the 1st page of google image search with keyword Gladius)
..And about all the shine and glitter..well...lol..:)
Thanks again..keep visiting.
08-30-2006, 05:47 AM
Great works! Keep it up...and all the very best for the rest of the works! I know this is a big 'challenge' for you...I am with you! Go on, Rock on!
08-30-2006, 02:22 PM
Thank you Priyan !!!
Here's another simple one..
#8 TACKS (donno how and why..but it took almost 1.30 hours to model this one:sad:..shadin extra)
Front and Side
Top n bottom
About Tacks: Getting a reference for this was the easiest  It was all around me at office (especially around my cabin and I've had to pull out atleast 4-5 of them from under my shoes so far :scream:)
08-30-2006, 02:46 PM
Your beauty renders are gorgeous, very dreamlike. Good work
09-01-2006, 04:23 AM
Lagging by 2 days already :scream:
Makes me feel like taking holidays from office to complete the challenge..lol
Here's another one..
#9 PARK BENCH (6-8 hours modeling and shading extra)
Side and a closeup
Top and Front
Back and Bottom
About Park Bench: Here again, I had no exact reference..i'd taken bits and pieces from many places..plus the butterfly design is my own simplification of a really complex design I found on one reference image. This was made thru the night. I slept on the keyboard and chairback many times during its making :banghead:. Full on box modeling. No splines or booleans involved.
09-01-2006, 04:53 AM
not only is your modeling good...but your texturing and rendering as well.....
09-01-2006, 02:21 PM
yeah props on your texturing and (of course) you modelling skills. I know what you mean with lagging and using up vacation time. Keep at it man, it's making us all stronger.\
oh yeah, I really like the butterflies in the bench. It's like a model within a model.
09-01-2006, 05:27 PM
:scream: MINDBLOWING STUFF !!
 All the best Anish ! keep rocking !
09-02-2006, 06:30 AM
Thanks Nakaikoi.. the butterfly was just an excuse to simplify a design that I first planned to do...and then quit coz of time issues. (these days am quite late to office becoz of this) lol :bounce:
Thank you Binder.. Actually it is the shadin and rendering tat is takin mor time than modeling..especially test renders..
Shyam!! thank you! Cheers!
Here's another one.
#10 KATANA (3 hours plus shading and rendering time)
in Color n shade...
a closeup (i luvd workin on the tiny dragon ;) )
About Katana: Another of my fave bladed weapons. Rather than just its cool looks, its fascinating facts!! Polymodeling again. Had time..so i developed the saya(the scabbard) from the blade. Deciding on bg and colors was hard..and finally settled for this :).
09-02-2006, 12:50 PM
Wow! I think this is one of your best models so far. I love the detail on the handle, especially the dragon. The knot adds great aesthetics as well. And as always, your renders are great.
quick question, did you model the sword handle and the blue fabric seperately?
Keep them coming:)
09-02-2006, 01:50 PM
Yes.the straps and the sword handle are separate pieces.
Always loved a Katana, though I dint know the name :)
a WIP for now. Will resume with it after 8th sept.
This time with Zbrush..
#11 HIPPO (3.30 hours)
About hippo: Thought I shud try organic stuff now. Hippo was a random choice. Made the lowres model in max and built the details in zbrush. sorry...dint have time to do displacement and beuaty renders from max:banghead:. ortho 3/4th view from zbrush looks pretty bad for a display:argh: too.
09-04-2006, 04:02 AM
I hope 'Squid'ward for Squid is acceptable here:bowdown:.
12 SQUID'ward' (4 hours and not much time on shading)
About "Squid"ward- Just felt like doing him becoz we dont have a toon category here and becoz hes one of my fave cartoon guys.
I had made Spongebob and Patrik (http://k.1asphost.com/anishmations/images/rendered/spo.jpg) some time back in sparetime and now am glad I made this guy too.
So here he is.. (maybe this is a wip..if i get time within the timeframe, i'll try rigging and posing him)
09-04-2006, 04:28 AM
Made it this morning..zbrush of course
#13 HORSE (3.30 hours)
I know this needs many tweaks here and there. Will start on it 8th. Till then I am on holidays to my place for ONAM (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Onam). Happy Onam to you all. Cheers!
About horse: Basic model in max...detail in zbrush. Thats wat an ortho 3/4th from zbrush looks like :D i wish there was a perspective camera there (or is there one already?). Direct from zbrush and so no large blow ups. Sorry!!
09-04-2006, 10:27 PM
All of your models have been great so far.
I would really like to see more pics of the Katana.
Great work, keep it up:applause:
09-05-2006, 12:11 AM
I love the squidworth. The hippo and horse look great textured. When I get the time after this challenge, I'd like to go back to my hippo and horse and texture them up with zbrush.
great work, keep them coming!
09-09-2006, 01:59 PM
I know it seems like such a small detail to mention at this point; but I love the way you chose to model you pencils "knife-sharpened." It really makes the model so much more intresting to look at.
All your models are coming along great. Keep it up.
09-14-2006, 06:57 AM
your models look very detailed... squid is one of the best interpretetions for this challenge... the katana and the hippo are just plain perfect... the only thing that bugs me (and not too much), is the tail of the horse seems kinda strange or it might just be me...
09-17-2006, 02:31 AM
Hi guys. .. just got caught in a mess of unexpected deadline:deal: based works. I now regret for the days i've lost. With the work i've got for the forth coming days, I dont think I'll be able to do a decent participation though I really would try!
Hats off to the ones who've been able to take it in the right pace all through! Especially robo and robert :):applause:
thanks KrasnayaZvezda, nakaikoi, sicean and icedeyes.:)
icedeyes: the horse is just the body structure...i was hoping to do all the hair work (mane and tail) in max later. I just suppose thats quite wat a horse tail wuld look like without the hair on. cheers! let the game continue!
09-20-2006, 03:27 PM
alrite..i've decided i'll squeeze in with a GOLD attempt atleast. making 20
thought i shud fill it up with some simple stuff :)
so here goes the few i've attempted durin liesure, the past 2 days..
14# FIRE HYDRANT (3.15 hours including shading)
About Fire hydrant: Was in a rush to make up for the lost few days in challenge. I know aiming for 30 is really impossible now. But now it was to make atleast a 20. References I got showed many 'species' of hydrants! So once again, had the liberty to assemble designs:). Dint get much time to work on shaders. Just threw some maps and basic bump and rendered the image. Desaturated and sepia-d it to cover up all shader and color flaws ;)
09-20-2006, 03:55 PM
#15 BRUSH (around 1 hour in full )
About the brush: Going picky abt choosing the simplest ones to reach 20, wanted to try maxhair on something simple too. So here it is.
09-20-2006, 03:57 PM
#16 ERASER (10-15 mins modelin..whew!)
a tough one here
About eraser: Funny choice of shape. But I knew I had to do this to fit in. Happy abt it.
09-20-2006, 05:22 PM
#17 BULLET (20 mins modeling)
About Bullet: Create cylinder...add more height segments..convert to editable poly. make scale variations on height loops...add turbosmooth...put a shader.render! happy!:)
09-20-2006, 09:38 PM
#18 COFFEE MUG (1.30 hours including renders)
About Coffee mug: Frankly speakin, I dont know if there is a cup like this one. I wudnt choose to drink from it if there was one either  Box modeled...
09-21-2006, 05:10 AM
you're good man, real GOOD!!....the renders ARE AWESOME!!....<< wish I was as good.
Damn ure good... Ever thought about animation? or are you really specified in modeling texturing and rendering.
And that bench really looked shrek like.. i mean the render.. reminded me at shrek..
I love the katana and ofcourse as im a gunexpert I really love the rifle-rounds you made.
09-22-2006, 04:21 AM
Thanks Binder and QNL..
and QNL, no..me not tryin animation right now.maybe later. just modeling for now.:) lemme get it right first.
#19 LONG SWORD (4-5 hours including rendering)
one more to go and i may qualify for consideration in GOLD category!
About LongSword: I found an image on google search very appealing for a longsword. decided I should do it.. Working on it thru night, I remember waking up a few times. lol.
Getting a bg image was tough too. Dint get much time to work on shaders after I spent sometime paintin silly rustic textures. Wanted to add a Gothic inscription on the blade...dint find a good font. So I added "VIIXMC" to the blade (watever tat might mean) Thanks to photoshop.
09-22-2006, 04:26 AM
as usual, very nice!....but....lol.....put the sword deeper into the ground....minor detail you over looked, don't mean to nit pik, but it stood out the second I saw the render.....:)
09-22-2006, 10:48 AM
this is quality work, you are producing here.
everything from modeling to final renders, looks amazing.
keep it up.
dude ure sword reminds me of conan! hahaha!
damn its great... what about the background? ive always been very curious on the background because as i understand you havent made the background, its just a picture right?
damn that sword is cool... ill once post a picture of my ak47 when its finished ;) ill learn how to render it beautifully.. and then i post it here so you can look at its magestic beauty..
;) keep up the good work.. being that good you must be loaded...
09-22-2006, 01:09 PM
hehe!! you got me there Binder :scream:!! LOGIC! I'll try pushing that sword down later today. thanks!
thanks for those words Abyss!
QNL...yes! conan is wat I had in mind too when I saw the reference image i used. yeah..the background is an image. and All the best for the AK47 you got in ur pipeline.
Here's my 20th model ( I now qualify for a GOLD collection)
#20 MUSHROOM (3.30 hours plus shading and renderin)
About Mushroom: Assuming this would be my last for the challenge to reach 20, I picked an organic form. Loved working on the bottom gills :)
09-22-2006, 03:05 PM
you´ve picked some very nice models, and you are doing an amazing job...
keep it up!
09-22-2006, 05:05 PM
FYI to all:
HCM: 30 Days, 30 Models: Voting thread will go live on MONDAY (Posting Rules) (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=408406) (link)
09-23-2006, 02:21 AM
Thank you killamill.
and thanks for the reminder Roberto!
I just added the "time taken" and "about the model" for all my entries. I've tried being true to the best of my belief. For the initial ones, I had made a time log sheet coz I knew i wudnt be able to do it in one sitting. But later, I just couldnt keep a log..so for a few its an approximation. Thanks !
09-23-2006, 03:44 AM
hey anish..... all your models look gr8 ...good modeling....keep it up
09-23-2006, 07:15 AM
You have some really good models! I really like the Long sword Specially, it's nice! And you have very good renders! I couldn't model the things you have and create the shadres and textures you have for them that fast so good job! wish i had taken the time to make my own shaders like you it looks ten times better! I wonder though how long did you spend if any doing uv's?
09-23-2006, 07:58 AM
thanks a tonne yencaray..
as for the renders..actually its for tat part that I took more time than modeling on many models (shading, lighting, a satisfactory camera angle). UVs got done fast...Not many models needed UVunwrapping. The few tat desperately needed neat UVs were hippo, horse, longsword's grip, axe and the nail and those were done with the ever famous pelting of Max . good luck with ur work too!
09-24-2006, 05:22 AM
heres a collage i made with my challenge models..click for bigger version.
09-24-2006, 05:58 AM
wow......... ammazing simple g8 models,,,
congrats man,, always love ur works.... g8 effort,,,,,,,,,,
09-24-2006, 02:10 PM
Too bad time didn't allow you to go for Platinum. But I'll be voting for you in Gold, you have by far the best models and renders. :) Great stuff!
10-13-2006, 08:10 PM
Hi anishmations (http://forums.cgsociety.org/member.php?u=175883), vbmenu_register("postmenu_3878549", true); you did amazing jobs really. I want to know how you make some of your model's detail like the Segway's type. Do you use floating gemetry to make the concave. If you use the way, please tell me how to use floating gemetry. If you do not use that way, then please explain how to make that. Thank you man, I really want to learn from you, you are doing amazing jobs.
10-14-2006, 08:51 AM
Holycow... you are really good at modelling and shading... keep it up, great work..
WoW aniish!! u rock man!!:buttrock:
Loves ur render..i liked the long sword and now it's my wallpaper..
