View Full Version : New Mariner Design To Blizzard Entertainment, Fausto (3D)

Pages : [1] 2

01 January 2003, 08:51 PM (

Hi! I'm doing this mariner to try get a job on Blizzard Entertainment... I know thats will not be easy, but I have a lot of hope (hint)... animation coming soon...

I have used my hand as model first, than I made the changes to appear stronger...

On the face, I will put the eyebrows, eyelashes and the tongue... I made some morph tests...

01 January 2003, 08:55 PM
wow thats really good.
my goal is to work at blizzard some day to :P but im still far from your point..good luck to you it looks blizz quality imo

01 January 2003, 09:04 PM
Awesome. Starcraft 2? If that won't get you in there, I dunno what else could ;)
The only crit I could have is that he looks like he has white dust all over him... That might be your intention though, but anyway, it's a bit like he's got a coating of sugar ;)

Also... Is the face texture painted from scratch or is it a digital photo of someone?

01 January 2003, 09:06 PM
Amazing stuff fausto!:)

01 January 2003, 09:08 PM

amazing work!!

01 January 2003, 09:09 PM
URCKA...!!!...Fausto....

01 January 2003, 09:18 PM
Looks very impresive, guy is badass;) Really only thing not good enough are skin materials. They look too plastic (arms) amd face has too much specular I think... He begs for SSS , even fake or in post ;)

01 January 2003, 09:21 PM
I believe Blizzard is currently hiring so you should be in luck. You should also submit some low count poly work for in game as well. They usually ask for 10-15 examples of your best work for modeling and a demo reel for animators. Good Luck!

01 January 2003, 09:27 PM

01 January 2003, 09:30 PM
That looks awesome, really!! :bounce:

01 January 2003, 09:36 PM
holy shit that rocks
excellent work

01 January 2003, 09:39 PM
Some of your weathering/residue on the breastplate is covering the grooves in the armor plate more than they should. You should still be able to make out the grooves through them. Otherwise though, your work is fantastic!

Michael Duffy

01 January 2003, 09:39 PM
Wow, this is simply magnificent. I agree that the specularity may be too high, but I don't think it really detracts from it any. I love the amount of detail in this. And I think this character would make an excellent addition in Starcraft 2!

01 January 2003, 09:40 PM
That's some great modelling :applause:

I so think that some of the textures need to be tweaked though - as Azazel also mentioned, the specular is too strong and not well defined enough on the skin.

The textures on the gun also look very baked - like the lighting is in the images, not the actual scene.

Otherwise, fantastic work!!

01 January 2003, 09:56 PM
I agree with Leigh, otherwise incredible stuff, can't wait to see this animated!

01 January 2003, 10:09 PM
As one of my friends would say: "That's mad whack dude"

Good job Fausto, and hopefully that's what you'll receive from Blizzard. I am huge gamer and its nice to know that there's artists out there that makes these games look the way they do. Please let us all know if Blizzard snags you (they should or we'll beat em up for ya).

Good luck,

01 January 2003, 11:34 PM
Hei, thanks for the kind words... I'm very glad with the comments... I'm working on specular of the skin... I gona put a map on "dust", so it will be softier (less intense) and more noisier.

thanks for all.

01 January 2003, 11:56 PM
This is ace my friend, I'm glad I seen it before your host maxed out, can you send me a few images? Here's my address and I'll host them for ya, plus I'll see what we can do about landing you a job :) this is getting an award for sure... I would like to plug it

No company other than Pixar has so consistently put out incredible work like Blizzard has... I was under the impression that Square closed their motion picture department after the fiasco of Final Fantasy (effects before story... BAH!). Sony is certainly good too, but Blizzard is fantastic!

01 January 2003, 01:22 AM
Oh, and very good work fausto! =) How long do you think did it took you to complete this character?

01 January 2003, 01:27 AM
HOLY CRAP!!!

Blizzard - as a player of your games, I DEMAND THAT YOU HIRE THIS MAN.

Insanely good (and cool) stuff fausto!

01 January 2003, 01:29 AM
The terran marine never looked so good. If they don't hire you, im sure someone else will gobble u up in a heart beat.

Fantastic Job! what program r u using, and can I see some wireframes of the guns and marine.

01 January 2003, 01:32 AM
the hair really lower grade for the hole, model. i mean, everything looks veryveryvery good. but the hair just doesn't match. i rather see him no hair instead of it

01 January 2003, 01:34 AM
Whoops forgot a couple, just saw them in the email :)

salud :)

01 January 2003, 01:36 AM

Blizzard, don´t loose time!!!

01 January 2003, 01:43 AM

01 January 2003, 02:20 AM
That is the coolest model I have ever seen. :)

Just one question though. Are you going make a version where his knees and arms are covered and maybe make him have a helmet too? Because he is going to be fighting in environments where there is no breathable air.

01 January 2003, 02:23 AM
I think he'd fit right in at Bungie making Halo 2 models and art! Maybe I should get Bentllama to post in here also :D

01 January 2003, 02:28 AM
Great work, really oustanding model..I don't like the hyperreal textures, but that's just me....

How long did this take you?

You should be working in film with talent like this.....

Take care,

01 January 2003, 02:41 AM
Man, that this too much!!! With certainty you go far, very far even with his talent, and us Brazilian we were proud with that!

I am his fan!!! ;)

Congratulations!!! :applause: :applause: :applause:

... he won't forget about their work friends when it gets his objective!

01 January 2003, 03:08 AM
Gaw Dang! Oh, I had to post a message after seeing this...

01 January 2003, 03:24 AM
I truly LOVE the detail in the marines and hand.

01 January 2003, 03:38 AM
awesome! :xtreme:

01 January 2003, 03:46 AM
I just have to say this is the coolest futuristic marine I have ever seen- it is even better than the models in Blizzards cinematics. Seeing this guy in action (animated) would knock my socks off!
Can I ask how did you do the textures? Did you uv map this model and texture it in photoshop combined with bump mapping/etc in 3dsmax? I bet the uv maps would have been hell but I would appreciate it if you could tell us how you did those textures.

01 January 2003, 03:52 AM
the images are great. may i ask what software you used to create this? keep up the good work :)

01 January 2003, 03:55 AM

Guys, i work with this guy and i must say that he is more than just an amazing artist; he is modest and a very good person too.

Faustinho :) , i wish you all the best, and now i will help you find some cardboard boxes to package your stuff... :)

We´ll miss you :(

Blizzard... please... TAKE A LOOK!

01 January 2003, 05:00 AM
fantastic work. Hope you reach your goals, because you most definatly deserve them.

01 January 2003, 05:03 AM
Maan, work in Blizzard, this is my dream, but now i'm far from this, but close. Good Luck.

01 January 2003, 05:05 AM
lets get married.

well maybe not.

01 January 2003, 05:45 AM
I think it's very well done but I would change the hair before you send that to us. :)

My pickiness aside, this would be good stuff to show for a spot on the cinematics team, tho I can't recall off hand if they are looking for modeler/texturers. However, for an in-game spot, you might want to show something lower rez as well.

BTW, any links to other pieces you've done that I can look at?

01 January 2003, 06:15 AM
Amazing work man. :applause: You'll get the job moss deffff

lilD, how did you know that BUNGIE is looking for someone of his calibre??? lol

We are currently looking for a spectacular 3D modeller and stunning 2D texture artist combined.

You should send your stuff in. Your work would fit within the Halo 2 universe... :)

Here is the link for the job information:

and here is the description:

2D/3D Artist
It takes an unusual creative talent to know how to build an inscrutable alien race of characters. It takes an even more unusual talent to know what happens when they atomize their enemy with an arsenal of bad ass alien explosives. If you think you are unusually creative and talented enough to address this difficult task, we have a job for you. Inscrutable alien references are a plus, but not required.

We would like to see your stuff.

thanks, for sharing your work here with us...

01 January 2003, 06:26 AM

haha Im the most impressed I've ever been. And I just finished reading this incredible book, it's called the List of 7 by Mark Frost. Look for it, seriously, if you aren't totally into a good read now and again, then this will change your mind. But oh yeah, I'm curious how you made the hair, and if so, why? It's really soft and nice looking, if I hugged him I'd want to snuggle his hair. I thought maybe it should be the same style, but all tough looking. like some zergs blood dried in it. or not. maybe some clips or longer so he can put it in a bun? Well, you're beyond crits by now, but I was just thinking about it and all. I wanted to know how simply because it would look great else where. later then :)

....I think, the modellers at Blizzard couldn't top that warrior, he looks great...

For me personally, the textures are more than okay, but I am specialised in modelling, not it's clear that for texture-specialists like Leigh, your textures are not the very best that can be made...but they should be for suiting well to that 'extreme' modelling...

If I were the boss at Blizzard, you would have your job, man...cause you only can get better and better...

Greetings from Switzerland

01 January 2003, 01:31 PM
i'm euuh, speechless

I'd say, go to bungie, work on Halo II, i'm hyped for it. Maybe it gets finished a bit earlier then :D

I'd really like to see this marinier in Starcraft Ghost! :bounce:

01 January 2003, 03:54 PM
Very impressive work. I tried to look at your website and something is wrong, this is a "critical" time to have it working what's wrong! i'd like to see more of your work and as mentioned if not as yet what package, modeling type(poly,nurb...), and time spent etc.

01 January 2003, 04:29 PM
I'm speechless.

01 January 2003, 04:46 PM
I hate to be the first to mention, but there's something really wrong with the shape of the arm; specifically, the area around and below the elbow. It doesn't look natural, the muscles are very different from that in reality...

01 January 2003, 04:51 PM
great textures

01 January 2003, 05:35 PM
are you a genus, i have never seen such beautifum cg picture, what are you doing in life.

Ok i know you're all wondering where wonder boy here is so I'll fill you in :)

His friend Fernando had this to say:

I´m trying to contact him at the moment (he lives in a city nearby, and don´t have access to a computer there).
He will just be back at monday, but i'll try to see if he can return tomorrow.

So he's there just don't have access to a comp at the moment...

Let's hope he returns tomorrow to answer all your questions :)

01 January 2003, 07:29 PM
omg, great job, absolutely amazing

01 January 2003, 07:35 PM
Respect! :D!
Indeed very nice, I wonder how he would look properly lighted in a scene. :) Very nice indeedy.

01 January 2003, 07:36 PM
OMG - that is such a sh%tload of work! And of bloody high standard too...

Only minor niggle is the colour consistency of the face (nose/cheeks...etc) - but it still works so ignore my futile ramblings!

Someone give this guy a job! :bounce:

01 January 2003, 07:37 PM

1-) Do you have some wireframes?
2-) What programs did you use, both for modeling and texturing?
3-) Is it possible to know what is your system? Cpu, ram, etc?

01 January 2003, 07:57 PM
Hi, my friend Fernando Ladeia had call me to ask wy I'm not posting e answer all the questions... I'm live in Sao Paulo and in weekend I come to a small city to see my family... I don't have broadband in here and the mariner project is not here, so I can conect Internet sometimes... I promisse that I will post all that you ask on monday (I'll be on my computer)...

01 January 2003, 08:18 PM
awesome work, man.
Keep it up.

01 January 2003, 08:24 PM
Ok, let's answer the questions... I'm doing this character in 3DS Max 5, and the technique for modeling was polygonal modeling. The hair was made with shag hair mapped in a surface with alpha channel for the lists and irregular topology. I'm using raytrace material for shaders, becouse it have more options for mapping and effects (translucence, fluorecence, etc) I use photographed textures and painted textures... face, I had edited a man photographed in front and side and I had compose and paint on photoshop on a opened UVW map (with an script called Unrap UVW, similar to texporter). The only thing thats hard to say it's the amount of time to make all the character, becouse it's been made all in spare time, like one hour by day or less... the head I remeber that I modeled in 5-7 hours... I'm using a Brazil beta for render...

the wireframes is coming on monday.

Thanks for the comments.

01 January 2003, 08:28 PM
The guy is so-so, but the guns... The guns rule. :D:thumbsup:

01 January 2003, 09:02 PM
Heh, gonna be lots of work reading thru and responding to all the questions! :buttrock: :buttrock:

01 January 2003, 09:04 PM
im only seeing 4 stars on this thread ....

25 would be fair enough imo

01 January 2003, 10:57 PM
Thats great! The detail and design are top notch! Love the weapon and armour designs!

01 January 2003, 11:09 PM

Hi fausto, great work
As has been mentioned in this thread before, sort out the problem with your website, the pop up window shows a "The page cannot be displayed" error. Before you start to reply to the questions here, ensure your site is running first. This is the time when it needs to be up and running...when you are getting the exposure you deserve.

01 January 2003, 01:44 AM
This is some pretty impressive stuff. Speechless Nothing to say

01 January 2003, 02:03 AM
Regardind BUNGIE, I´m sorry for not answering before... I just saw it. I´m very glad with bentllama´s interest on my work.
For sure I´m gonna take a look on the related link and I´ll be more than happy to send my stuff...

Now, about my website,

unfortunelly, my website is off line... it is host at a friend´s provider, and I´m experiencing some problems... but I´m doing my new website and as soon as possible it will be online with my newest works...

if that doesnt get you a job than blizzard needs to lick there own ass

Yikes! Now the pressure is really on us. I don't speak for the entire company (or any part of it for that matter), but I don't even think any of us can reach that far after working a desk job for so many years.

Perhaps you could lessen the penalty by saying that Blizzard should lick the ass of an attractive female or something.

Great, amzing, fantastic ! What else can i say ?

01 January 2003, 09:59 AM
very cool, being a student i love seeing someone post high quality work (and setting a benchmark for myself) and employers actually responding in real time. it really gives me hope and inspiration that if you have top skills you Can get a job. ps the model kind of reminds me of a video from the 3d studio max r2 demo/promo cd that had a blizzard cinematic on it. I can truely say that the beginning of my 3d career/ interest began with that promo cd. weird that that stands out. I had no idea about any 3d program ever existed, my mom's co worker at an insurance company accidentaly recieved the 3ds cd in his mail and gave it to my mom, because he new i liked video games. hmmm what would i be doing if not for that cd...

01 January 2003, 11:38 AM
As srich23 said, as a student these kind of things really push us forward!! In every single way, i mean motivation for an amazing work, and hope after seeing the good response from higher levels at this industry!
 Very very impressive.

PS:Like someone said before at this thread, CG TALK thanks for giving such a chance to everybody! Thanks, thanks, thanks... :applause:

Those are..... the coolest looking models I've seen on these forums. Oh my God lol! Can't wait to see the Wireframe ... *drooling*

01 January 2003, 05:43 PM
I would love to see a wireframe of the large gun, PRE meshsmoothed of course, any chance of that? Just want to see the low poly cage, the gun is as amazing as the character!!!!

01 January 2003, 10:03 PM
:applause: dude u seriously rock big time, when i frist saw this i was like devastated. It is quite rare to see someone with that type of caliber, and if u dont mind me asking is there like a trade secret to make those textures, especially the face so REALISTIC?
i would be very grateful how one can even start texturing like that, at any rate great job.
p.s man ppl like u makes me think twice about ever posting my work in this site :p

01 January 2003, 10:10 PM
i just read how u created yur texture i guess i should have read before i posted anything :) but still awesome job!

01 January 2003, 10:49 PM

01 January 2003, 08:05 AM
I agree with the others for the highlights.

Also, from an animation point of view, get rid of the dog tags. Their gonna be alot of work to animate, and in any case, no marine, trooper, or whatever would wear them there. It's not logical.

good work:thumbsup:

01 January 2003, 08:52 AM
I'm very sad i only picked up this thread this morning, but WOW this is absolutely fantastic :buttrock: :airguitar

Love everything and to make me feel inspired on a Monday morning you must know it is really good.

thank you for sharing this and i hope to see much more of your work.. upload it all

what method did you use in modelling these?

01 January 2003, 09:12 PM
OMG! amazing. I would like to see some textures. I dont know how you get that cool looking effect of your skins. You must use lots of shaders. Amazing fausto! You are my role model :)

01 January 2003, 09:40 PM

Best of luck...and btw. i dont think you need any!!!!!!!!

01 January 2003, 03:13 AM
Great work!!!

01 January 2003, 03:48 AM
All I can say is that it's true Blizzard style. If you do not get hired by Blizzard or some other company of badassness then it will be a great injustice both to you and the gaming community for lack of such CG skills put to use in cinematics to drive the story forward.

Good luck man.

01 January 2003, 08:21 AM
Damn! :kickass: ;)

01 January 2003, 09:38 AM
Wow, inspiring work. Just when I think I am getting somewhere with this CG game someone like you comes along and puts me in my place!! Good luck with your job application.:applause: :applause:

01 January 2003, 11:06 PM
That is totally awesome!!!!!!! I give you 5 thumbs up!!     You have sparked a new interest in me. I think blizzard should hire you. If I were head of Blizzard you would definately be hired right on the spot. I love the design and your gun design is just completely awesome. That is definately Blizzard material, maybe they'll use it for Starcraft II, or if not maybe a Starcraft expansion. Either way you are one heck of a modeler. Grats and continue with the great work. I'd love to see what other things you have done.

01 January 2003, 11:32 PM

Best thing i've EVER seen!

1 very small comment though... I didnt notice this myself, but when i showed this thread to a friend he said his ear looked a bit 'out of place'... its located a bit weird... should be moved a little to the front of the head I (we) think...

Anyway, KICKASS work!!!

01 January 2003, 04:40 AM
If Blizzard doesn't hire you, its because Hell froze over! Dude, thats some really great work. Extremely professional, in my opinion. I can only hope to someday reach this level of expertise. Best of luck and stay at it, you'll get there.
Btw, you going to the Game Developers Conference, by chance? Blizzard and everyone else will be there. They'd be pleased to see your work, all of them.

Wow that's gives this noob some hope. How long have you been doing this kind of work? I hope you get that job.

01 January 2003, 08:13 AM
Really awesome work, it deserves 5 stars.

Neverlees, the modellisation is not that clean : there's a lot of tris that could be avoided , and the same for 5 sided polygons.

Except that, really awesome work !

Cara, se vc não entrar pra Blizzard, acho que você entra fácil pra ILM!
Você honra nosso país com seu trabalho.

01 January 2003, 04:12 PM
Max 5 huh?

Does your process for working with subdivision surfaces rely on HSDS or NURMs or are you just toggling a meshsmooth to preview frequently?

Lots of us are probably wondering what method you use to preview your smoothed surface while working on your polygon cage.

Thanks for the post, great job on everything and best of luck.

01 January 2003, 07:24 PM
HOLY Scabadi!!!!

This is great man hope you get that job; if not i dont understand blizzard.

01 January 2003, 07:46 PM
IMO a single model can't grant a job. You need an entire reel to get a job, but i'm sure you'll do a great job with that ;)

The Magic Pen
01 January 2003, 09:49 PM
You do not need an entire reel to show off superior skill , I work in games and this guys one model looks better then 99.999999 % of all applicants reels I have ever seen ...

01 January 2003, 09:51 PM
Yeah i agree with you but we're talking about Blizzard, not one random company, anyway i'm not that expert... ;)

01 January 2003, 10:41 PM

I`d love to see the Textures for your Model. Would it be possible to show them to us?

Thx a lot!

BTW, GREAT work! I love it!

Parhapps light infantry for SC ghost? he seems to light equiped for a marine. Good modeling anyway!

02 February 2003, 05:19 PM
I aint in the same league as you mate i dont really have much beef with this guy......he's quality, one thought i had was that the detail on the dog tags seemed to be very little compared to everything else. maybe you cud pput some engravin on their or a clever texture..........but like i said, different league mate.

its excellent:applause:

02 February 2003, 08:50 AM
You know, I saw this thread a while ago now, and just took a cruise through it again, and honestly, it STILL kicks ass.

Usually when I see something that gives a strong first impression, most pieces of art start to lose their strength over time.... and everytime I look at this, it still holds the same level of awe. There's very little that I would change.

Truely one of the most impressive peices I have seen in a long time.

Fausto, please keep us up to date on this character, and your career path so that some of us can live vicariously through you, and cheer you on!

Good Luck,

Tenho certeza que vc não vai ter problemas para ir para o exterior , mas se eu fosse vc mandaria uma fita para a ILM tb.

Com todo esse talento vc teria grande chances de entrar lá tb.

Mais uma vez PARABÉNS!!!!!

02 February 2003, 08:37 PM
:) First of all I think that it is a fantastic display of work, both technically and artistically. If there is any C&C to offer the only that might be worth considering is that I always thought that these space marine characters were outfitted for a more space like environment, ie a containment/astronaunt suit. Going with that train of thought sleeves and a helmet would be required for reasons of air and temperature. However your interpretation certainly isn't hurting you at all, but it might be cool to show how this suit could be configurable for space purposes as well. So then you have two strong pieces 1. which works in an atmosphere environment and 2. another that can operate without one. This modularity aspect and attention to detail and context would I think be appreciated by the blizard people due to the insight and understanding of truely how such a character would be fully integrated in such a universe. Might sound a little geeky but basically the exploration of context could be of benefit to both grow an already monsterously strong peice (without much extra work)and an understanding of the methodology of how it would seemlessly integrate into the Star Craft universe might give u some xtra points when presenting it to blizzard.
Just my 2cents for whatever its worth?

02 February 2003, 09:01 PM
Hi everybody and thanks for the comments and tips... I like to show a pilot head that I'm making for a 3D total's tutorial... I have to make this tut before I continue the mariner...
