I feel nuts- we have to do 8,5 hours of animation
till the end of year and I'm entering the challenge:rolleyes:
but who cares:p

here's quick sketch, I'll see about story, they are probably
marsh keepers (is that right word?) the bottom of the pole
could be paddle (for boat they are standing on) and
at the top some weapon maybe.. dont know.. anyways I won't have time.. but it's fun..:D

01-24-2003, 02:57 AM
You just could not resist huh? ;)

Let me be the first to say welcome. It will be great to see more of your work. 8.5 hours of animation can wait.:p

See you soon.

01-24-2003, 04:15 AM

01-24-2003, 11:25 AM
wohooo! I barely saw your entry, I'm very glad you made the big step and entered.
but I hope you won't do the same thing as those two 'frenchTalking cartoon muppets', and just tease with a concept! :p

01-24-2003, 01:55 PM
...no no Fellah! It's not cool to speak about nano and Stipen like that! :shame:

Great Mandrake! i'm very happy you entered the challenge! Im patient to see the 3D model!

01-24-2003, 02:50 PM

very solid modelling

01-25-2003, 06:58 PM
nice loops

01-26-2003, 05:02 AM
looks a little square in the middle. tweak it some.

On a more serious note..do you really start out with a box?
It seems a lot of ppl do..i prefer to start with a plane or a single poly though

01-26-2003, 07:21 AM
Nice concept... also that sketch looks fine:thumbsup:
I wait for some model:)

heh... that`s really Work In Progress... you show basic step of modelling
Good Start:applause:

01-26-2003, 12:13 PM
The only thing funny about posting a box as a WIP is the fact he is good enought to be that cocky.

I am shuddering at what he'll possibly come up with.

01-26-2003, 03:32 PM
Hello Mandrake. Your wip picture looks suspiciously like mine did....hmmm :D ;)

If this suppose to be funny........................it's not.

01-27-2003, 11:39 AM
Mandrake, Mandrake, You Da Man! :) I can imagine how fast that 6 sided 8 vertices mesh become a HUGE incredible beast with over 1 million polygon after smoothing! :D
anyway, how did you make that box in maya?! ;->

..but you're good artist, not like those lazy bustards (they will
reckognize themself dont worry):D

ivanimal.. what's not funny? being locked 48 h in toilet?.. at least

02-03-2003, 03:39 PM
Blocked out the basic shape and edges.. I have zero time for
this but I'll try to do some work on weekend..

02-03-2003, 04:32 PM
Lookin great - we finally got polygons! Only comments woud be of detail [and I'm sure you've seen] - the pec looks streteched, and odd thing under arm.

Looking forward to it getting more finished!!

02-03-2003, 06:40 PM

... strava chovek ...

02-12-2003, 07:25 AM
The face is lookin' great!! The muslces do seem to flow a little too easily - mostly I'm sure attributed to creating topology, but the back muslces below the pecks and the forearm do this, I have no idea to your technique of course! - dazzle us again :) !!

02-16-2003, 11:27 AM

God damn, its good.

This is a right xample how a lot of aninmation can make a man go nuts ;P

Pozdrav Mandrake

02-20-2003, 12:15 AM
Tnx People!:)

I did some "late night" work and here's resault. Haven't work
on arms and back yet. I'll do my best to keep going..:)

02-20-2003, 12:32 AM
sweet mother..

02-20-2003, 12:51 AM
You have never told your secret modeling techniques, now it's time to share! ;) very nice details...

02-20-2003, 04:41 PM
man thats fantastic ure my hero can u show us ur level 0 and 1

Mandrake use maya subd´s (hierarchical)
ist the best subd solution u can get :)

02-20-2003, 10:36 PM
While I think it looks really good,I still think it has too much definition.Too many non-existent muscles. It seems this creature just has curves and indentations just for the sake of it.But than again it is a fantasy creature,so I quess it's allowed.A little less would have been better, but still a really cool model.

 Man that's some fantastic modelling... Great Job!!! Show us more!!!

02-21-2003, 09:29 AM
 yeahhh! great modeling!

i love your caracter!

Vivement la suite!

02-22-2003, 09:31 AM
Great work mate, you really know how to carve that shit up don't you?

I agree that prehaps it might have too many muscles, but hell, it's middle earth, so anything is possible.

The face is just insane though. It looks very onld and powerful

Could you post your lowres cage if you get a chance?

02-22-2003, 05:42 PM
:) Thanks guys

Swag- Ya you're right Maya subds are great and different.
if Alias can end up with easy solution for changing topology afterwards it would change the modeling paradigm a big deal
thanks much for lovin my work

Vladvrz- thanks man i positioned lights for showoff modeling
.. but if iluminated with outdoor lightning it's washed out and looks differend.. an older man has more details than this really

Ionized- thanks there are actually 3 low res cages with
maya subds, so I'll have to post them all

Thanks others also.. I'll post some wires later..

02-22-2003, 06:15 PM
AMAZING MODELING!!....and original too!:buttrock:

02-22-2003, 07:59 PM
1% Bodyfat..............A bodybuilders dream.Excellent thus far,it's another very fine creation from a talented artist. The head to me is "Fantastic",totally full of true "Character".

It's already one of the top contenders. I hope you can find the time to get him finished,if not fully textured then at least fully modeled. It's one I look forward to seeing come to full life.

Very nice creation Mandrake...........

02-22-2003, 08:51 PM
Nice! Really dig the head. Don't scimp on the wireframes either. ;)

mandrake, you are a great player in this 'game'. skips sleep to be able to finish the challenge, respect!! not like those other ones..

the model turned out great!! don't know what more to say. if you had more time I'm sure you would have been able to make it even better, with some lensflares etc..

hope to see you in another time,
take care

02-28-2003, 10:11 PM

02-28-2003, 11:03 PM

And for our international audience these are my thoughts...............

Mandrake where do your creatures Pump iron? They all sure do get great workouts there.;)

Great creature in all aspects.Impressive I must say.Congrats on another great job.

03-01-2003, 06:17 PM
Fellah: I actually have a better version with lots of lens flares
and creature stands on a space ship and there are
planets, and sparkles and colours and 5 bilion polys...
but that version is sooo good I was sorry to spank you all
thus I posted a "downgraded" version:D
But again, I helped ivanimal a lot with my P.P. skills and
I think he's right candidate for wining..:D
If you need my services just say, I'm willing to help:buttrock:

Swag: Thanks man sorry for waiting for wires I worked it out last
few days didnt really have much time

Virtuoso: strange words again  ;) .. I didnt want to
pump up this one, but it didnt fits well with massive
head and neck and tiny arms so I gave him some deca
intramuscular and few vinstrols before goin to stage.
I didn't read steroids are forbiden on CG Talk for pumping creatures?? :D

Thanks Dimitris and 3D Freak and all others exept ivanimal for
suportive comments:)

03-01-2003, 10:07 PM
:bounce: Mandrake ...hi again...i am writing again 'cuase i am sitting about 1 hour in front of your image and i still find new details and i am also trying to figure out if the shader is procedural or with texture maps...one thing i think i am correct...the skin shader must be ramp shader...yes?

...awesome piece....

03-03-2003, 10:14 PM
hey tell me something about maya subdees

when you get level 0 done. and move onto detailing level 1...and your done that..and move onto detailing 2...
if you go back to level 0 and start splitting polys itll kinda screw up the levels below right?( the areas that yer splitting )

just wondering cuz i was playing with houdinis subdees and thats what happens. :) ( i was expecting it tho )

03-03-2003, 11:16 PM

Designed to

03-04-2003, 10:01 PM

DimitrisLiatsos: thanks, yes sort of ramp shader.. i wanted more
transcluency essp. on ears but couldnt get it correct on time..
no proc maps.. there are four 2k maps (+four for bump) layered
maps human skin, lizzard, frog;) + some skratches and veins
one piece uvs and combined uv and projective painting with Photoshop work.

ambient-whisper: you mean when you got into poly proxy coss
you can't split polys in lev.0? Well thats big big disadvantage
of subds in Maya when u turn poly to subd and got into level
tweaks forget about changing topology, yes you can go to
poly proxy but it's painfully slow and tweaks are screwed..
But for me advantages are too good i cant neglect it..

and easy skining, look at this

testDeform (http://users.yubc.net/~vvv/testDeform.avi)

..just default binding with 10min paint weights.. the underlying
geometry is moving and you deal only with 0 level (wrap deform)

Ionized: thanks man that was funny(tough i didnt get it on first):)

03-05-2003, 02:41 PM
:bounce:  The wrap deform binding procedure is great ...it sure drives your model very well !!! .
Very PRO stuff .....i hate u ,:scream:
(just joking of course...:bounce: )

u surely know your Maya!

03-06-2003, 01:13 AM
yehhh mandrake the skinning test look great - u used the level 0 or a poly (level 0) for the wrap? man u have a very high skill:beer: :buttrock:
