Here's my latest piece. I'm not completely happy with it, but it's as good as I can make it for now. Hopefully he's at least recognizable...

Software is LightWave+Sasquatch, some Photoshop post for noise/levels.

Well, I thought it looked like Grand Moff Tarkin of Star Wars fame, but I didn't know he was played by Peter Cushing. Shows how little I know! :D

Anyway, excellent likeness. I love the hair and the wrinkles. Excellent job, all around.

looking great!! maybey try making him look older though, like more wrinkles, and some liver spots and a slightly darker complexion...any plans with this?

My only crit is about right eyeball - it looks too deep - move it just a little in front.

I had another stab at it with higher bump and colour map percentages, plus different post levels. Interesting comment about the right eye; I think the right half (his left) is a better likeness than the other side. Can't put my finger on what's wrong with the left (his right) side though, Peter Cushing had a fairly strong asymmetry to his face and very deep set eyes. Tricky, but a great facial structure for modeling :)

The likeness is very very good. One of the best I've seen! Simple model = well done. Some details. Since this is an old man, maybe U should try to make his eyes less blue? 50% less saturated will do nicely I think. Some work needed on the hair also, but that's just details... :applause:

I recognized it as Peter Cushing from the thumbnail on the front page, so I think you were pretty accurate with your interpretation. It seems almost like a caricature, but Peter Cushing looked like a caricature in real life anyway.
There's something about the lips that don't look right, but I'll have to grab a Cushing ref to double-check.

Really nice job on him. Definitely an under-rated bad guy in the series and a model I've never seen done before in 3D, so great job on that!

Thank god for subdivisions! I wouldn't be able to tell what it was if it was the low-poly version posted in his second post!

Great job! Likeness is very good; I recognized him on the thumbnail too;)

However the ears look like they need a little more attention. They don't look very realistic. Also some of the wrinkles might benefit from modeling some volume into them instead of relying all on bump-maps. They look a little flat.

Otherwise: great! (just trying to get you to aim for perfection;) )

Edit: I've been working a lot in the model kit biz, especially Garage Kits, where models are mainly from movie characters. And some attempts has been made on Cushing, but has never been done perfectly. If this would be a sculpture it would have been the best yet!

I didn't notice the ears until he mentioned it, and they do need some work...

I would perhaps accentuate some things in his skin texture also, such as moles, freckles, liver spots, whatever those spots old people get are called. If I remember correctly, he had a few. (Is the man still with us? I imagine he would love to see your work, but probably not my post, lol.)

The Pixar eyes could use a little tweaking, but they still look alright, even if you don't mess with them. Since you're going for realism, I would 'dry' them up a little, and add more detail to the texture.

That's really fantastic.

I think the lighting really makes it. I would love to hear what kind of lighting you used.

Also, some grabs of the textures would be good, particularly how you accomplished the look of the eyes.

Outstanding work, but I'm biased because he's was always one of my favoriate actors :) I agree with the comment about the eyes and the skin also seams a little specular to me but the structure of the face is awesome. Peter Cushion always had a very striking and distinctive shape to his head and you have brought it out wonderfully.

Thanks for the comments, some good crits in there. I've had yet another go at it; Improved the ears a bit, desaturated the eye and made the liver spots more visable (he's starting to look a little diseased, but I like the overall effect :) )

Labuzz; no plans to add a body at this stage, I was mainly interested in capturing his likeness.

Dies-Irae; It's box modeled with some point-by-point refinements.

Perambulator; It's standard three point lighting (Key, Fill and Rim) standard spotlights with blurred show maps. The eyes maps were generated with my PS Action from here
it doesn't work for everyone though...

Here are the maps reduced in size, the originals are 2048x1024.

Because the colour map is overlaid onto a procedural skin base I like to use a "Hard" or "Nasty" colour map with no alpha, then blend it with a seperate alpha map. This is to prevent the washing out of the colour or white fringing that tends to happen when using the draw version directly.

When it comes to capturing a likness I think this is about the best modelling and texturing job I've seen. Great work!!!:buttrock:

I'm curious about any Sas tips you might want to offer. Did you use Fur or hair guides? If Fur, did you use an image map to control hair placement and how about combing?

Woah!! Your work is truely impressive. Great model, even better texturing, I wish I could do something like that in LW. He also looks very original, and asymetrical, you don't see alot of that nowadays. DO you have any plans to animate him, cause that would be awesome?

Sasquatch specifics (with notes for non LW/Sas users :) ); I used both fur and hair guides. The fur helps to blend the hairline which can look a bit harsh with just guides, and provides some fill under the guides.

The fur uses a density and length map with surface combing and a "part" Comb Definition (parts are arbitrary polygon groups that are unrelated to surface attributes). This part is a strip of polygons above the eyebrows (Sasquatch combs the fur away from this area.)

The hair guides have a light gray hair colour defined in sas, but additional colour control via a colour vertex map applied to the guide polys. That was the easiest way to make the hair grey at the sides and darker on top. Both the fur and hair have high Translucent Lighting settings to give a nice halo effect from the rim light.

The eyelashes and eyebrows are also sas fur.

Hope that's usefull info.

lerpiedood - no plans to animate, he's done. Haven't made my mind up what to try next, might try a Star Trek TOS actor...:)

The mapping on this face is standard cylindrical so I used Ernie Wright's "Unwrap 2" plugin (, it creates a 2D wireframe image of the mesh in whatever projection mode the selected surface is using.

just wondering.. do you use Ernie Wright's "Unwrap 2" in preference to LW's uv unwrap. I've found it to be a lot more accurate/quick/less prone to stretching.

Hey, very cool model and texturing job. Looks very close to the guy as he looked in Star Wars Episode 4. Would really be cool if you did some lip sync job of the audio from the movie.

Crapstick - Since I'm not using UV mapping I find that Unwrap 2 is the fastest way to get a 2D wire image for loading into photoshop. I like the way it uses the Layout subd setting to draw the mesh but creates the image size to autofit correctly to the low res cage; UVunwrap will only unwrap the low rez cage, plus there's the hassle of saving the UV as an image...

My word, this is definitely a nice piece of art, the textures are superb, and I really dig the hair! The only thing is the ears which has been mentioned, but that's small potatoes :)

Great work! Obviously Peter Cushing,but in the first image,I think it looks like hes got something in his eye and is about to blink! Last image from the other side looks like hes got rid of it!

very good Peter Cushing portrait. The only thing that I would say to work on is the hair. That's the only thing that I see that could use some work. It looks to sparse.

Maybe put an imperial collar around his neck, a little Grand Moff Tarkin action maybe?

This is an excellent rendering of Peter Cushing. He is one of my
most favorite actors for the Horror type films. I've seen almost all
the Hammer Fils he's been in.
