View Full Version : Soda Can Problem

Hi, I'm pretty new to 3d and making a soda can as a modelling exercise.

I'm running into problems making the top of the can. This is as far as I have gotten:

The problem I am running into is that when I move the detailing too close to the edge, the subdivided geometry starts overlapping and creates these nasty errors:
The same thing is happening with the other dent.

I've tried pretty much everything, cutting polys up every which way but just can't get it figured out. Any help at all would be greatly appreciated.

Also I've been trying hard to get rid of all tris and 5sided polys but there are some I just can't seem to get rid of, and when I do a cleanup, why does it select the two quads in the top dent!?:

I wouldn't go about using cut on the polys to make the opening of the can. I personally would use splines to make the shape of the opening, extrude it, the use booleans to create the opening... Just a suggestion

Ooh... looks like you're using maya... Hmmm... Have you tried moving those vertices down? There are a lot of them around the opening and near the rim...

Hi flakeson,

I think I know what could cause the problems but I need to be sure. Wouldn´t you mind sending me the file to my e-mail (to_raptor[at] I could try to lay down alternate topology if you want.
