View Full Version : Halifax Matte

Hey everyone,

Last week I had the idea of making a matte painting out of the city I live in. So I went out to the bridge to take some pics that span from one side of the bridge to the other. I put my camera down on the railing (nervous that it was going to fall into the water) and took these pics. And tonight I worked them all together so hopefully I can get a camera movement that would look as if the camera is rotating when I start my demo reel and this is what i have come up with.

I know that it is always best to make concepts before getting images but I felt that since i knew I wanted to make a matte out of this city, it would be best to first get the perspective I wanted. So next i will start doing some basic sketches over this before I go into working on the final matte.

I would love to hear any crits or ideas :D

your city looks very like my city :)(Istanbul) I made something like this last month too in another city.First I went to a bridge and took lots of photographs then combine them to make a long matte painting. I'm talking about this .I think it's ok that you took photos before sketching. Now you have the base matte, you can draw something on the photo you've made to make a composition.Let's see what will be come up:thumbsup:

hey Ismail thanks for the comment and very cool matte you got there :)

Here is my sketch so far. I am thinking about a nice peaceful scene at mid day. It seems a bit hard really to come up with a proper composition since this matte is not ment to be seen all at once but in a camera movement , but it is surprisingly very fun to work with.

I am leaving it a port city. The one on the right will be the main part with business buildings and industrial warehouses and then the more rural area on the left, and in the center will be the main shopping center that was built on a man made island and accessable to business and individuals without getting in each others way.

Cheers :D

Hey, nice one Matt :)! I know noooothing about matte painting so can't offer any advice, but wanted to chime in and say great start.

yes this is what we called "nice sketch" maybe you can lower the bridge on horizon,it seems to be very high ruining the buildings on center, above water. But that's just my opinion it looks great now too.

hey matellis great stitching and sketching for the mattepainting, I think those buildings work well in the general panorama. are you going to animate a digital pan camera?

this is going to be awsome! I think the only thing i see is the islands perspective seems to be sa little off, like its leaning towards the viewer.

Matellis - I love Halifax and your decision to take advantage of the wonderful views to create what promises to be an impressive matte painting. I just have two questions after viewing your sketch. Are you going to play around with your colour pallet much, especially in regards to the buildings? And secondly what are your plans for the cloud trails in the sky? Anyway I am very impressed with this project and am eager to see its progression and final result. Keep us updated!

Ismail: Thanks man , yeah I'm thinking about lowering the bridge. Right now I'm thinking about have bridges and highways all around but I am still not sure.

Jaime: Thanks a lot. And yeah thats the plan. I am thinking about what would look nice in my demo reel and I thought a nice camera pan would be nice. Now the question is can I actually do it and make it look believable. I am new to this game so really its all about trial and error.

Adam: Hey thanks for pointing that out! i missed it totally. I will fix it up after I try and get the atlantis done (if i can).

Miss. Megan: Halifax is a great city for sure. Not to big and not to small. I have been living here on and off for years now so I thought it would be interesting to use it in a matte :) I will be playing around with colors as well and the time of day. I am posting an update now but it is not a final concept , I still need do more to the sketch. And for the clouds I am not exactly sure yet , i was thinking about just a peaceful sky but that can always change :D

I'm really digging the sketch update, instantly makes me feel like its night time. If you do decide to play around with a night time look you could really have a lot of fun with moonlit cloud edges, building lights and water reflections. I'm especially rooting for the water reflections as I very much like the reflections you've made in the water for the 'building island'.

I don't know if these will help at all but here are a couple of sites with skyline pictures for inspiration. The style of buildings you have reminded me strongly of asian skylines (don't ask why). Anyway that's enough of my rambling for now, thanks for the update!

your matte is 4 times wider, so i expect 4 times more work done by you :) alot of people dont really put much work into finishing the panorama to perfection, but i dont see why not, i mean the viewing size is the same height, so all the details (or non-details) will be seen in the video!

hey Matt, I agree with Adam about the island.
Try rising red a bit/ lower blue ... it's cold. Seperating the lit parts in a more different color might help to make the image more interesting.
