View Full Version : Races of Middle Earth - character - Royal

01 January 2003, 02:04 AM
Whee my first challenge :bounce:

Ok, first sketch for my creature of the middle earth.

This is a scavenger race which are also good with mechanics, they invent stuff for transporting cause they have the tinyest legs and can't move around.

The dude I sketched is a lazy one since he caught a bunch of guineapigs to do the transporting for him :D
(sheez I suck at storys hehe)

Any thoughts...
I'll take this one into photoshop now

Welcome to the arena!!!:wavey:

01 January 2003, 04:24 PM
Thanks for the replies, I should get to color on this one soon, I'll post updates as I go along.

I'm also thinking about a background for this one, what would you like to first I thought about a forest scene like lothlorien, but then maybe mordor like wasteland would be cooler...any ideas?

01 January 2003, 04:33 PM

GREAT!! Excellent concept, idea and sketch!!!!!!

Love everything...

Why not the hobbit village? He could be crossing it...

01 January 2003, 06:40 PM
Just blocked out what colors I want to use, no details or crap yet...also have to do the sketch for the background, I like the idea with the hobbit village, then I can make some curios hobbits that checks him out from a distance :buttrock:

C&C always welcomed

01 January 2003, 07:12 PM
hehehe. I hope nobody takes offence and hits you with their prosthetic!

01 January 2003, 07:24 PM
hejhej och välkommen till middle-earth :)

Nice concept you got there, are they evil AND lazy or just lazy?

01 January 2003, 12:37 AM
Ok here's a small update again...damn I work slow :hmm:

Gamorron; I hope not, I didn't mean to be offending in any way.

Alice; This guy is just lazy, but since he is whipping guinea pigs then some may see him as an evil person :)

Well, I should start concentrating on details and color the rest of the stuff now.

Comes along great:beer:

01 January 2003, 02:00 AM
Ok here's the newwest update!
Switched the whip for a pole and the grass for a smoke.
The left hand looks like crap have to fix that. Also should make stuff more dirty.

I need some input :bounce:

01 January 2003, 02:02 AM
Small detail shot

More soon

01 January 2003, 03:06 AM

Hehe..The old Carott-gag. Super:thumbsup:
Comes along nicley!

01 January 2003, 02:43 AM
Looks good Royal! Nice work on the metal surface.

The only thing I can critique right now is that it looks as though his knuckles would be dragging on the ground. Can you extend the legs more or add bigger wheels to fix it? It would probably be easier or cleaner than trying to put a bend in his arm.

Cute hamsters BTW.

01 January 2003, 12:52 AM
Thanks for the comments guys :D
Kirt; I've fixed the problem now, thanks for the suggestion!

Right now I'm working on background design and lighting I'll post an update sometime this weekend

01 January 2003, 06:00 PM
Ok, started to sketch out background small update but it's getting there sometime at least

01 January 2003, 06:10 PM

love the colours....

where's the curious hobbits?

why not putting biggers wheels in the back part?
Better look i think

just wondering

good work

keep up

Cheerz Master of G-pigs:beer:

01 January 2003, 01:36 AM
Thanks Bruz and Tommy :)
You guys really make me not wanna give this pic up

Sorry I dumped the idea with the hobbit village I realized that it would take to much time for me to finish :(
About the bigger wheels; I should check that out, might work.

Update; Fixed the grass, is the rock too disturbing composition wise? Also started to roughly sketch out the remaining elements in the pic, I'm gonna make sarumans tower behind those mountains :buttrock:
Methinks I really need to color and light correct this one It's getting messy heh.

Love to hear your thoughts

01 January 2003, 03:22 AM

Composition is great.
And another funny detail that made me laugh: The hiding G-pig...
Man ya funny:thumbsup:

Waiting for more

01 January 2003, 03:02 PM
looks good Royal. That one hiding is funny. As for the background, well its a wip so I'll only say it reminds me of Monty Python's The Holy Grail when someone said, "It's only a model."
looking forward to detailed touches.

02 February 2003, 10:46 PM
Did some crappy mountains...should finish this rather soon I think if I don't get some crazy ideas

C&C always welcomed

02 February 2003, 04:28 AM

02 February 2003, 01:46 AM
Heh almost two updates in a row...Ok here's the latest version I'd love to hear what you have to say about the lighting I tried out.

Slacker>Thanks man :)

All in all I will prolly leave it like this for awhile and then when the submission date draws near maybe make some fine adjustments, (that is of course if you guys don't point out any obvious major mistakes  )

02 February 2003, 04:03 AM
Looking real fine Royal. Love it. I don't recommend changing a thing!

Thank you everyone who helped me with this picture!

02 February 2003, 07:04 PM
Funny character...I know some people who are almost as lazy:D You did a great job with the lighting and I like the stylized rendering you've got going on. The stray guinea pig hiding behind the rock is hilarious. Great work:beer:

02 February 2003, 10:41 AM
Thanks for the post! And great work by the way. Now tell me your secret... :) I´m just interested in peoples technique.

02 February 2003, 01:39 PM

Thanks for the replies guys

WSC-Cool glad you liked it :D

Chris- Thank you as well, my can't have my secrets!
No seriously, I use pretty straight forward coloring as you can see in my progress shots, huge amount of layers, (I think 70 in this piece  ) I will make a tutorial about how I color since Ive been asked about it a couple of times. I'll post it in the 2d section when it's finished.

Alice- Thanks! How is your demo progressing btw? And do you have a good time on Island? I'll see you in two weeks :wavey:

02 February 2003, 09:34 PM
