Hi everyone.

Finally a mattepainting challenge!... I've never done this kind of thing before so I thought I'd join in to check it out.
I never really had to meet any demands but my own, so this is going to be a tough one. I hope it works out.

Okay, so I've started drawing. This is just a quick sketch, trying to nail the composition.
I'm completely new to underwater scenery, so I've not really begun to establish the colour palette yet. It turned out to be more tricky than I had imagined. I'll have to work on that later...

I chose to depict the ruined Atlantis. I've also chosen some sort of mix between Mayan and Greek architecture for the buildings and. Don't really know how it will end though. This is just a first draft :)

I've been working a bit more on the look of the temples. I've settled on a mix between the temples of Chichen Iza and Angkor Wat. What do you think? :)

Been adding a lot of details to the whole image! Worked mostly on the two temples.
The architecture worked out fine for the scene. Now I'll have to make it look as though it's actually underwater :)

Continueing to add details. Been working a lot more on the cliffs and the architecture. Decided also the throw in some Roman domes :)

I've also chosen not to let the city be a complete ruin, but add a hint of life and civilization, by throwing in some lights and windows.

I've also worked a lot on trying to make it feel like an underwater scene. Mainly by adding a lot of haze, and pushing the colour palette a bit more towards light blue/cyan. Also tried to add a few rays. What do you think? Does it feel like it's under water?

it looks very nice.But you must make more underwater feel I think. overall it's going great!

Looks very nice till now! I personally prefer the greek buildings more than the maya.
I am not sure but I think the lightning is way to bright. You should make the light darker and more blue to give it a better feeling of underwater.

Thank you for your comments everyone. I appreciate them.

I've experimented a bit more with the haze and colour, and I think I've found something that works quite well. So if I add a school of fish here and there, perhaps some more distinct lightbeams from the windows, I think it will work out.

Plaf: Yeah, that could surely be a great experience. Unfortunately, I'm going to Sicily with my family this monday for about 10 days (well, I'm looking forward to it of course :)). Just one more thing you have to put up with when you're 18 I guess...

I'll work some more on the rocks cliffs today, so I can get a new update before I go.

I've been working like mad on the environment. I really want to go as far as possible before I leave for Sicily tommorrow. I hope to have have yet another update ready tonight.

Been working on the cliffs mostly, but I've also been adding a lot of detail to architecture. It's really coming along fast :)

What do you think? Many areas need more attention, but I like where it's going.

Okay, new update. Not a lot has happened really. I've just been finetuning details throughout the whole image. Cliffs, architecture, weeds, etc.

I've also added a school of fish in the distance. Just another underwater indicator :) They're a lot more visible in the 1280 x 720 version. I hope you like it so far...

I'd love to hear any comments or ideas you might have.

hey thomas this is looking really cool I like the composition a lot but I agree with SamsonsReaper about that it does not look too much and underwater scene, work on the mood and get a lot of reference to make is an underwater scene, it's all you need this is great

Hi everyone :) I'm back from a wonderful time in Sicily to work some more on my painting.

You're right everyone - the painting lacks that certain underwater feeling. I've therefore been reading a bit about underwater photography to see if I could learn something new I could apply to my painting to make it more realistic. It turned out that making this painting realistic is mission impossible :)

First off: (I was aware of this), visibility is rarely more than 30 metres under water. So my very motiv is imposibble to capture under water...

Also, water absorbs the rays of the sunlight that comprise colour, so all the warmer hues are lost. In fact to get any nice colours under water, you need a big flash and to be within three or four feet of your motiv, depending on the waterquality. So...

I did though try to utilize this knowledge and give the painting a bit more of a realistic underwater feeling. I've faded out a lot of the greens from the weeds, and changed the hue of the lights into a bit warmer yellow and red. With the faded green, I felt the painting needed some additional colour variation.
I've also added a lot of murkiness to the water, so the visibitly would be just an inch closer to something realistic :) It was quite a painstaking job as a lot of details were lost, but I just have to live with that.

I've uploaded both the old painting and the one in 1280 x 720, so you can take a closer look. What do you think? Is it an improvement and what can I do better?
Perhaps somewhere in between? I'm looking forward to hearing from you :)

Hi! I like the left part of your composition, but I´m not really sure about the tunnel with these lights. Maybe you could duplicate the hole composition, turn into multiply mode and delete some areas to increase the depth and change a little bit the light. Just an advice:)

yea, agree with GonzaloGolpe. And i don`t know, but i think that kind of green vegetation "moves" away from underwater mood. IMHO =)

Well. not exectly )) I ment that that kind of green vegetations looks like trees and stuff like that. It`s close to outdoor scene, but not underwater. And of course that kind of green as well. Your green have some yellow tint (like in sunny day). But underwater green is clozer to blue i guess

OKay, so this is my final image. I would have liked to spend a little more time, adjusting details and so on, but that has to be for the next challenge. Instead, I've fintuned the colourbalance a bit more towards green. I hope you like my finished painting.
