Hi guyz,

Atlantis was one of the most criticized and fantastic myth of mankind, and really good subject to me ! i'm in for this one.
There is a moment I want to mix 3d with matte painting, and tests my "skill" on this, maybe it's time to go now.
Another objective for me is to create an underwater environment ! I hop to learn more technics and tips with follow all thread and create mine.

And for now and futur, it will be great if you could excuze me for my strange english :scream:

Some research about Atlantis (very interesting, for my general culture :) ) :

In 370 B.C., The Greek philosopher Plato wrote In "Critias" a describe of Atlantis, as the Kingdom of Poseidon, god of the sea.

About the temple wich place is at the center of the plain :
"The palaces in the interior of the citadel were constructed on this wise:-in the centre was a holy temple dedicated to Cleito and Poseidon, which remained inaccessible, and was surrounded by an enclosure of gold [...] All the outside of the temple, with the exception of the pinnacles, they covered with silver, and the pinnacles with gold. In the interior of the temple the roof was of ivory, [...].
In the temple they placed statues of gold: there was the god himself standing in a chariot-the charioteer of six winged horses-and of such a size that he touched the roof of the building with his head; around him there were a hundred Nereids riding on dolphins, [...]
And around the temple on the outside were placed statues of gold of all the descendants of the ten kings and of their wives, and there were many other great offerings of kings and of private persons, coming both from the city itself and from the foreign cities over which they held sway. [...]

My first idea is using a part of the temple's describe by plato to do the center of matte...if it is technically possible for me, and in time. :scream:

Temple is central piece of Atlantis and will be i think the central piece of my composition, so i try to make a plan with a little architectural disposition.

So here my first test for cam angle and hypothetic composition.
As i don't realise handsketch, I placing some basic objects in 3D and make some posing and compositing test.

this is a nice start SweD, yours is going to be the most accurate I think , talking about history or the legend itself , but hey this is going to be awesome , try doing first some 2D color sketch so you control the composition and mood first

I"ve already an idea in my mind, so start the modeling.
This is the first gate (gate of the great hall) to enter the temple.

about drawing, I've some difficulties to translate in 2D speedpaint what i've in mind, i made some rough of course... I will try to do a 2D color sketch and post here in same time I'm making the 3D modeling.

modeling is on the way for the first gate.

As you can see, I would to put on wall gold ornaments wich be visible in final cam angle, and bring to the gate another monumental aspect.

I've made an attempt too, in puting poseidon's head on the wall, but its really expensive in polygone and not enough visible to stay here.
By the way, the good point is that the head was modeling yet for the futur work on statue.

So here my poseidon head, on the base of a lowpoly cage I use to do my characters.

And now, going to sleep ! :scream:

Wow this is looking sooo good so far! Just keep at it! I will watch your process :)

I think the walls should be much higher ... or they would not need a gate ;)

Great start and great research.
I would do what Jamie suggested, you can always paint over your original 3D sketch to get the lighting and the mood right.

WOW man that's great! This is how a with such a gate should look like :) I like this statue. Maybe you can try to vary the statues ... make 2 or 3 different ones. Would look really great :D

Trunks; sure it would be great with other statues to break the linear style, but for the moment i'll do with that and if i've a rest of time at the end, would make others :)

for the moment, 35°C outdoor, approx 70°C indoor, hot to try making some render and test for the temple ! :rolleyes:
thinking about water of Atlantis refresh me a few ! :D

Sooooo here the update, after long time, and little file crash (love 3dsmax :banghead: )

here the modeling of the temple, rest some nymphs statues, and big one on Poseidon, represented here by the large sphere.

here some texturing and tests made on photoshop :

with a pass with scanline to have shadows :

and the last one, maybe final ambiant, don't know !

not really happy with this concret map, but it's just a test for now ;)

As you said Rei, texture is not appropriate to the scale. Just test in photoshop, the texture will be directly take a uniform scale in 3ds. ;)

Velarion, to much contrast ? nooo never to much a 2 oclock in the morning when eyes are near their orbits :scream:

So today, not enough time again, but work on the door of the little temple !

No serious problem with architecture at this point for the door, so work first on the Guardian statues. Even if the details dont be visible in the matte, i want him to have an aggressiv style, to make understanding there are the keepers of the poseidon's gate.

Wow, a lot of gr8 work, man! 3d matte - i wish i could do my matte 3d as well, but don`t have time for that now (

thanx Mpavel :thumbsup: I don't forget the deadline is close ! It's why I've start in same time to work on the matte himself.
Some work on photos for the moment, to give an idea of the style I want. iIt's great to work in photoshop with tablet even if matte painting is not my specialty, so remember the cgtalk rules and be courteous and polite :scream:

The first is to blury and has a too much grain.

here another lightning test, more detailled. I keep the dark blue color for deep underwater. I keep too anly the first plan into the light, based on the fact we see only some meters in deep undersee.

Cyril I think that the lightbeams still look like multiplicated in photoshop. You need more variation in them. The green plants are mystically flying and you're hiding all the details you modeled before. I liked the previous version much more, although the depth between the temple and the city is not clear.

I totally agree for the beams, no work on for the moment, just a directional blur.
Ok for the depth, must to work on too
But plants ? I find that this give a old underwater style, with a green dirty map on walls, I think this could be pretty cool (but I can make a mistake). However I take you comment and appreciate it, and keep it in mind with working in same time a non-plants version.

Hey coming on really nice. A few points, the grass to the right looks a little large when compare in scale to the small buildings to the right and light rays look a little too linier, water often distorts light so rays would maybe expect to a little cris-crossy some light intence than the other, try doing each ray on a seperate layer and adjust each opacity to a different value, this would create a pleasing effect.

Agree again for the beams, and a layer by layer seems to be the only good solution.
Plants to the bottom right will be delete I think, to add some personnals plants in brushes or else, with same tones of the green plants on the temple, but not photos. :)

Only 2 days before the deadline, and here another test of global rendering ! I'm near the end I think, find a great atmosphere in this one, time to add some details like fishes or else.
Tell me what you think about.

size : 1280x692, put two black lines at top and bottom to go to 1280x720 regular size.

I think youŽd change the light cause it seems that weŽre in a great deep but thereŽs a great focus light from top,d you know what I mean?Go for it dude, and good luck again!:thumbsup:

Coming on great, like the grass, though you seem to be struggling with the light a little, it appears as though you using a 100% motion blur to create the rays, not sure if this is the case but they still appear too linier, and the large ray in the center looks too big. Try taking the rays away and just using a few, picking out the highlight areas on the surface, ie take one and have it coming down above the city to the left corner. Try giving them a slight gaussian blur, pull down to around 70% opacity and stick blending to overlay or soft light.

Also add a few high lighted dust particles in the rays perhaps.

Take a look over mine, far from perfect but i think the rays came out quite well.
Keep it up, very nice structures.

you're right everlite, it's a war between light and me :scream: I'm not used to make lights in photoshop, and this is a very good exercice for me even if I'm really not satisfy about the rays.
I think test with manually trace the rays of light over layer. Maybe as you said, add a layer with particles.

keep it up mate, i'm sure you'll get it working. To be honest i live by a saying if it don't work then don't do it, only a personal thought but if the rays don't work then they will only hider your final artwork, so it may be better to take them out.

take a look on this page:

some good light rays, notice how they never go in the same direction, for this to be the case the light source would have to be equal in size. This can be seen easily in some of the above.

hope that helps a little :-)

another test here with working more the background. Erase a little of the city, to keep the equality of the scale between temple and town.
I think temple is more integred in the background now. Stay always the work on details and light.
Wait your opinion between this one and the last one before.

Hey looking great as always, though i liked the little city, shame :-) might have looked good having the city all the way upto the main wall.

I think it looks better with out the rays of light, but that's not to say it wouldn't work without them, give em another go and see if you can get them working. There were quite a few good references in the link above, just download one, convert to black & white, drag into your scene and click multiply in the blends, play with the contrast and opacity, then you that as a reference to paint over maybe?

Great work, one to be proud of :-)

Thanx everlite for all this tips. Scale down the city was necessary to keep the good scale of temple and all composition.
So after test, problems, and joyces, here is my final entrie for the unofficial challenge ATLANTIS :

This was a great experience, to do again surely.
I would to thanx my mother, my father, and my manager :scream:
Seriously, thanx to all, for your tips, opinions and support during this challenge. I've learn lot of things by seeing your entries, and it was very interesting for me, to realise my first matte painting.

hi cyril, I see alot of improvement from your first steps. try to look for colorvalues and their relation ... integration of elements(the rock on the left ... fishes too dark). good luck.

Thanx Marco, some improvement because lot of test and lot of learned things from start to end.
Hope to work on again in couple of days, to realise the Big Poseidon Statue i've can't do for time limit.
You're probably right for fishes, made to fastly for sure, terrified by the deadline :scream:
