Hey Lolo, ohhh, thanks for the overpaint! Clearly to see what you want and I also like this version!:) The volume light is a good idea, but I have already the strong dof-effect for the background, maybe it will wash out things too much...
And I still have this vague idea that the color white means mourning in the asian culture...but the contrast seems to be just right and I don't like the saturated brown version myself, now I'm totally unsure:scream: , here is a quick composite with some colorvariations to compare...

...definitively white for me... or very dark... black or almost... no blue or darkbrown...
...the paper light is a good addition, especially because we can see now more of the room, that give more depth... good point to open our vision...

I prefer BLACK SILK, with subtle reflexed light and color on it..that's just me though...:)

Lolo, Becca, Mark, Glenn and Johan: Thanks for the "color-votes":) ! I've rendered some more variations, but finally I agree that it can only be black or white...and I'm more on the dark side here!
I also tried some colorful applications for the robe like Glenn suggested, but it doesn't work...So here is my preferred version, it still needs a little postwork, but this should be more or less the final...

This is such a lovely piece :)
Glad you went with the darker robe - I think it goes really well with the whole setting. The white one (even though very nice - and don't want to tread on any toes that voted white ;) ) to me seemed more bathrobe style - so fluffy slippers would have been a must :D
I think you have brought it all together so beautifully - and watching it develop has been almost a journey in getting to know both the man and his tree... quite special! oh and not to mention seeing your skills:thumbsup:

It's a while ago since the last activity here, I've had no time to put my hands on something anatomy related during the last month, so I'm a little rusty...not to speak about my zBrush skills:scream: !
But I couldn't resist Magdalena's new workshop, and here are my first polys for a Colinet sculpture, actually I discovered a little late that the reference is an oil painting, so I'll have to guess a lot...this is the link (http://www.artrenewal.org/asp/database/image.asp?id=18270) to the reference

Hehe, severe. ;-) watch the upper arm, especially the connection between the upper and lower. The back of the upperarm, tends to be more rounded at the base towards the elbow (that's where most of the muscles are). The shoulder of the lower arm should be lowered or dropped, to relax the arm a bit. Its seems tense still and I think it woud improve the pose a lot. There is a tendon that stands out that connects to the pinky side of the forearm. I think you might get some large skin compression folds in mid torso on the side with the raised arm.

Wow, just discovered your latest project here - she looks amazing! Very sweet, fragile and delicate. Wonderful work.

thanks for taking a look in here and I'm glad you like the dancer, especially the hands...they are not to die for:scream: , but I've always my problems with hands and struggled to get this time something acceptable...
I wanted to start another Colinet dancer for the workshop, but I'm late with my christmas preparations, so this has to wait. And how about your own anatomy thread, no time for personal projects? Would be nice to see some special Gunie stuff again here:) .

Hey Sabrina!!... really sweet model!!.. beautiful gesture, especially the hands!!:bounce:.. I am a bit worried about the right shoulder, though... looks to me like the clavicle is extending itself a bit too much into the shoulder.. and also, check the shape of the clavicle.. seems a bit too straight now.. will look more natural if you give it just the hint of a shallow "S" shape.

Back from holidays I just discovered that my last saved file of the dancer is corrupt, so for the workshop this version has to be the final...don't know if I have the time and motivation to restart with the previous version.
But this was fun and I've already planned to make another Colinet-dancer, avoiding some of the mistakes I've made here...
Anand, thanks for your comment and the hint with the shoulder, of course you're right and I've tried to fix it as good as possible.

again, I can say character modeling is your world ...ah, that's sweet and I wish I could believe it, I feel much more confident with interiors, and characters are a personal challenge, I'm struggling and need a lot of time for it, nothing comes easy or without thinking. Last year I spent all the spare time of 3 month with drawing human anatomy from bones to muscles and flesh...only to see that the progress is more on the technical side. I'm far away from catching poses and expressions the way I want and always fear that the result of all the work is a lifeless anatomy study...so I'm glad you already see an expression in the black man:love: , I can asure you that I have a perfect image of a proud and powerful hunter in mind - now I only have to bring it in some polys...:scream:
I love what I can't do ...hmmm, I guess it's the same for me:D !

Yep, time for a name change, it took the last six months a good deal of time to split our company in two. The new situation should give me a better focus on 3D. And hopefully I can start posting something new in my gallery soon!

Well, this is a rough new basemesh...completly ignoring all advices about a good basemesh for zBrush, but more in line with the muscleflow and with more control over it in max (hopefully;) ). I'm just beginning to fix some areas where I expect problems...

I had a long night unwrapping the whole thing, a little refining of the torso, painting some very basic maps to let the shader work...at least the displacement seems to work the way I wanted it...

Heh I know him too, thats a good impression to start with :).
The SSS is coming across just a touch waxy to me in certain areas right now. I expect that's a function of it being early days for the piece (as it looks spot on in others). I've been in a 600 to 4000 poly limit world for the last little bit and can't help but feel envious of your basemesh ;). It looks poly lush in the right spots, I would guess it'll deform like a dream.
On your workflow: Do you have a fairly flexible back and forth between ZB and Max then? I pretty much do all the high poly, and then low as a second stage. It seems easier to me that way (changes are easier to do on just the high etc), but that could be that the low feels very technique heavy to me so I need the weight of a nearly done sculpt to push it through ;)

Thanks all for the feedback. I'm a little concerned about the 'likeness', this seems do be the result of an overdose of "rainy-holiday-evening-movies" with Russell Crowe, I was pretty much impressed and thought it would be fun to play around with just a similar character. I wouldn't dare to try a portrait...and of course it's a great resource for expressions, poses, different hairstyles and costumes (and a good excuse to watch more of his films:D ).

I wasn't much around myself in the last months, to much work and to little time to make some personal stuff. Hey Kary, thanks for your comments! Yes, the shader needs more work, it's all very "wip" at the moment. And which workflow:D ? This is all about finding a workflow for me, I'm tired of struggling with all the technical stuff and just want to find a solution for all the typical problems now and forever (well, at least until the next update for either max or zBrush). So far I'm quite happy with the back and forth, I even succeeded to change the UVs when I cut the mesh to handle a higher polycount for each...and it's very comfortable to rig the lowpoly version in max and then adjust the pose in zBrush...So this is more playing around to find out what I can and can't do with a character if I hopefully ever find the time to built a complete scene.

Hello girl... finally, I prefer a little the previous version, even more bright... just a bit too wax...
Just need to find the good average.
The last is too grey for me, less constrasted and now, he appear toot flat :blush:
I dont't think he need much work to appear more healthy... he just need more "fur" :scream:
and more bright and deth in the eyes... and maybe lips more wet... no ?

You're certainly right about the last render, looks a little flat, but I guess this is more a matter of the lighting. And yes, eyes are always a critical point, I have to work on them and also a ton of other stuff.
You want him fury:D ? Well, here is an unshaved version especially for you - still bold, but learning how to make good hair is one of the points on my list, I hope I find some time for a fancy haircut on the weekend...

I'll add to all the wows. Couldn't just step away without saying anything after seeing this. Looks very well. Maybe a little pale, but the environment/lighting might be causing this. I like yesterdays render. Improved a lot since first updates of this. I think you know what you're doing so I can only say keep going in that way!

yep... for me it's already a very good result even if you don't seem really sure. Of course, the hair cut could be better... especially more practice... but with a little photoshoping, that could be more prefect ! and for the moment, his haircut seem similar than mine, well... nobody's perfect :D
The skin this time appear really better... I like much... and eyes... very very good... at this point... you could be proud of your work...
...just need a little of environment for the final picture :love:

Woaaa , it's freaking gorgeous , your modeling is spotless and the skin is damn convincing.

The hair looks pretty cool to me , do I see alpha plans ? If so , the texture sample works really well . Minor suggestion , maybe they are a bite wide , by reducing thickness they might cast less shadows. Although , by experience , I found more convincing to add some hair hint directly on the skin texture .
Anyway , it's already looking wow ! :)

Final picture is far away though, I really want to take the opportunity and try some realistic clothes, and some bodyparts are still wip... the hands for example. You see the hair and fur of max, I've tried alpha planes, but I was not happy with the result, much too view dependent for me...unless I make something wrong:shrug: ...Thanks for pointing out the shadows, they are way off, don't know why I haven't seen it! And yes, a texture solution may be a good thing especially for the hairline. The thickness of the hair was my attempt to make it fancy:blush: , with a lot of styling gel!

The previous version, without the strange "toupet" at the top, seem for me natural and more alive... less helmet :blush:
...but as you know, photoshop is always your friend, a bit of postwork is also possible at the end :arteest:

I've learned to trust your eyes, so I'll go with something like the first style, but it's so much work and rendertime that I prefer to wait with the hairs until I have something more final. Well, next stage of awful tests and learning basic stuff - so far I've never succeeded in making good clothes, as you can see here...
My struggling with clothfx are not very anatomy related, so I take some time and come back later with a bunch of outfits (hopefully!) and some poses to consider...atm he's very unhappy with his new Hawaii shirt:scream: ...so am I!

Hey Majid, thanks for the tutorial link, I haven't seen it before, perhaps because it's Maya stuff, but as I understand it clothfx seem to be very similar in Max and Maya. Unfortunately this is only covering the basics. Though I'm usually not a friend of tuts about each and everything I'd really love to see a more advanced dvd about clothes, something like tayloring an Armani suit...animatable and good enough for close-ups:banghead: ...

Wow, Sabie! This guy really rocks - I can't believe how good you've become on this realistic stuff, he looks really splendid. So, is it Russel Crow or Lolo that is your model for this? He looks a little like them both :)

Seriously, I continue to prefer the first version... I know, that was not the perfect haircut... but us... men... we're not perfect too :shrug: It's also our charm... not ? :p
But for this one, you can try to do hairs less smooth on each side of the head with some small hair which exceeds, that will make less bowl... and at final... it always remain the photoshop solution !

first inspiration came from some Russell Crowe DVDs, but I'm open for all influences:p .. .
Well - one can really get inspired from watching him. :)
This latest version I think is a bit Gladiator but not enough much to be typical for the style if you get what I mean. I think I prefer the earlier version only perhaps less combed.
If that fails you could get stunning result by using Lemogs parrot hat - a spot-on fashion recommendation... and who are we to question the french when it comes to fashion? :D
For the shirt I suggest a soft bluish grey or similar - that would bring even more life to the skin.

hehe yeah your right. Everything needs time. Although I have to say that I might have taken my mouth a bit to full. Work, the 50heads, the Pheonix DVDs and I would like to get a bit creative with my own stuff. Butt I guess I will concentrat on the 50 heads and the go back to the DVDs I hope I will learn a lot.
I like your heads very much I looked through your thread they look very much like the orignials you seem to have a good eye. You motivate me to do better with the next heads.
I can't say much to mr. Crow but I like the new haircut better :D

Wow Sabie , so much progress around here , and the result is amazing .
Very natural pose and impressive shirt. One thought if you got some time , would be to add some details on the cuff , maybe some buttons ...

I must say that the last 2 hair do's are looking much better.
Why not try spike up the front? it works for me. ;)
The pose is great and much prefer the shirt now.
I know it's a bit late in the whole process but i think he looks a little
pale. it might help with the hair alittle.

Roman, thanks for the nice comment about the 50 heads...but I have to admit that it is not the "good eye" only, for the first bunch of heads I used a grid to get the proportions right and I needed several attempts for some of them. The training really makes a lot, so I'm sure you'll make good progress with your heads too:) !
Hey Gunie, I've planned to make a closeup and indeed a scene with the full figure...at the moment there is a low poly body for the cloth simulations and a full modeled torso with arms and hands. I hope to find some time to continue soon:shrug: ...
Hey Steph, glad that you like the pose, thanks...yep, the shirt will have more details if I ever deceide about a final scene...at the moment nothing is collapsed, so I can easily change the pose and run a new simulation for the clothes.
Jeffrey, I'm relieved that you see a progress with the haircuts:D , thanks! And I admit that I have a bad habit of making slightly desaturated renders, so I will have an eye on it, thanks for the hint!
I've just started to give him a lower body and some pants, nothing to show yet...but I've made some light tests and here is the latest close up...

Morning Lolo, ha, I made a little dance around the desk when I read this, finally a haircut you like:D , thanks! And you're right, it's to blurred, it was just a quick composition...
So here is a first render of the clothed body, it was not easy for me to find something like a relaxed standing pose, not sure if this works...and I've so much trouble with the hands that I decided to continue with some sketching and hand modeling before I finish this character...

the buttons on the shirt are an excellent guidy for the viewers eye.
About the pose... I'm not sure if he is leaning against the wall or not?
I would certainly give it a try to pull his upper body a bit more backwards, so he is resting against the wall with his shoulders.... think you will have to experiment a bit with it.
Other than that, I think his right hand is a bit distracting because it is so bright.
He does have a pale skin in general but I think his hands could be a bit warmer colored..
looking more awesome with each update!

I drop it in photoshop... and that appear quickly more clear for me... his head is a bit too large... you can see this animated gif to compare...

uups, yes, now that I see it compared...I'm not sure what happend, it's measured accurately and though I'm not going with the "heroic 8 heads" proportion it should be okay:shrug: ...but is obviously not:D .

Thanks for your help with the pose, I think it looks so undecided as I was with it, playing a little around to get something more convincing. And you're definitely right with the hands, they are still not textured and way to bright, I'll fix this...
Meanwhile I've checked the proportions, they seem to be okay, but I had some really odd camera settings, so I guess it was a perspective and disortion problem...just a quick render here, hope it looks better now...

Looks like loads of work here. When I saw the portrait I thought it was a reference photo. :D The only thing I see is maybe the trousers and shirt miss some more radical wrinkles, other than that amazing.

Pehaps you should just push the fur a bit further in the last one.
If you use a hard edged custom brush with multiple dots (so you don't have to paint each hair) on top of the current fur, which is a bit blurry at the moment, and play with the layer modes and/or opacity perhaps. Do this several times towards the tips of the hairs so you end up with blurry origine of the hairs but sharper towards the tip of the hairs, I think you will have an awesome effect.
You did this perfect on the hairs inside the ears

Nice work with the model - amazing details on his face!
Marvin is a beautiful kitty! I like the angle of the last one and you've done the Marvin's eyes real well. Fur is a challenge - I tried lots of fur tutorials ages ago when I tried to draw my cat (which I never finished), and most of the best ones involved drawing a lot of the fur hair by hair. But most did start off with multiple dot brushes or blocked colours and smearing, and then tweaked the results by placing individual darker and lighter hairs on top.
