Since I wanted to join in on the CGTalk Anatomy Lesson Series - The Head ( I might as well start an anatomy thread here too.

I do have an old sketchbook thread ( at if you want to check that out too. I haven't been as diligent updating it. Probably because I've been spending more time here at CGTalk. Time to renew my efforts here.

I'll be mainly using OpenCanvas ( because I just love being able to playback the WIP. I just wish it's more widely used, it's mainly used in Japan. I also have openCanvas 1.1 that has the ability to network multiple people to work on the same canvas. If you're up for it send me a PM :)

I'll also upload clips of the playback so you can comment on my technique as well.

My art background:
Seriously started drawing senior year of high school (when I was 18 yrs old). Took all figure drawing classes at my community college instructed by Ron Brown ( Great teacher, great guy. My main focus is animation (3D or Traditional). Main goal is to be involved in creating characters, from concept to animation.

Great to see all of your work here! :) I like the energy you've invested in your sketchbook studies, it's something I'd like to see more of! :)

With respect to the head studies, one recommendation I might have is to really break things down in terms of an analysis of the planes of the head. Really try to analyze the heads vs. copying them ~ there is a big difference between them, and analysis will always yield more in terms of an understanding of the forms you are endeavoring to understand by drawing them. :)

You might want to take a look at this Tutorial which shows some step by steps in terms of breaking down a form in terms of planes / and analyzing:

I'll start from scratch again on #003 with your recommendation Rebecca. Thanks for the link. That tutorial kinda reminds me of one that Ron Lemen (aka fredflickstone) at did. Fortunately I saved them before the image went down, I guess I'll have a look at them too. ( ( ( (

Don't get too frustrated with these, I know it can be tough to move on without totally finishing something, but I think in the end, it will all click. :)

I'm just complaining about this the same way you might complain that your body is sore from exercising. :)

Anyways here's a WIP on the next two heads.

Lol, I know what you mean. :) Heh, unfortunately none of us are machines, so it's impossible to predict when things will click and when things go a bit more slowly. :) Unless I've been painting continually, I get totally rusty, and even then I find that I have to take breaks or things won't come together. Just part of the natural painting / artistic process, I guess. :)

You might already know about the network capability of oC. But finding people to get together is hard. Then check out Project warPaint (! A place where other artists can host or easily find a server to join. Just download the application to see the list and click to join. Starting a server might be a bit trickier, but there's a FAQ to answer questions.

There's not really enough people so I'm advertising in hopes of getting more.

The openCanvas program is included with the warPaint app or you can get it here (

Lost track of time but I think I got through it faster than the first. I know it's not about speed, but if I can get the same quality at a faster time then that's now I can feel I'm understanding it better.

I'm probably going to be slowing down on these heads, I've been neglecting some other projects I'm working on. But I'll keep them coming time and motivation permits.

The 50 Portraits Thread will remain open, so you are welcome to post there as you can ~ having said that, I would still try to do as many as you can while retaining quality in the given time frame. :)

The second head is a bit less convincing than the first, which has a lot of strong presence ~ would love to see you add a few more passes to the rendering of the second so that the two portraits form a strong pair. :)

Hmm... I thought I posted the completed one.

I should've cropped out the left side more, or put something there. Not happy with that empty space. Other than that I'd say it's an improvement in my digital painting skills. Partly thanks to the head studies :)

Been working on a dog warrior character for the blizzard art contest... been feeling pretty discouraged though. It's funny though that I thought it was due last night but it's actually due a month from now so I was working pretty frantically on it LOL. At least I got a lot of work done.

I KNOW the sword looks bad.

Guess what? I got my sketch posted on Animation Academy's blog! See Oct. 20th Entry ( I had issues trying to get a solid construction with my character design, so I made a skeleton for it.

I didn't really think I would get any work posted on there, especially with all the talented artists I saw in the class. I was so freaking happy. :D

I'm still sketching.... man I wish I had a tablet PC or a Cintiq, scanning my pages feels a little time consuming. Bah, I'm just whining :p

But I am waiting for a Toshiba Tecra M7 to finally go Core 2 Duo with Santa Rosa chipset, then I'll get a tablet PC.

I agree that the scanning of traditional drawings is timetaking and boring... especially coz the scanned image is hardly ever as good as the original...
... but drawing traditionally is such fun don't you agree? :)

I'm still sketching away, at Borders. 30 minute guy from photo ref.

BTW, I've finished my 9th sketchbook on Dec 17, 2006. Yay!

I plan on studying the works of Alphonse Mucha ( with some copies, so stay tuned.

Also in light of some threads talking about the quantity and quality of critiques on CGTalk I'll make a major emphasis on how open I am to them on selected posts. Sometimes I'm drawing for fun so I'm not expecting serious crits. But keep an eye out for ones that I want to improve on. Hardcore crits FTW

Not sure how to go about with the arms and the sleeves look a little flat to me like there's no arm underneath. Ah well, time to work on the armor and get back to the skin later. Ok...

SirRon, to be honest, what I think would benefit you most would be to do pages and pages of Sketchbook studies, in traditional pencil or pen, of Anatomy Studies from books like Loomis, Hogarth, and books that can be found linked on this thread:

Check out razz's thread to see how many Anatomy Studies and sketches he is doing. That's how many you should be doing as well to improve.

Since I'm wanting to work on the arm, figure I'd start there.

I'll work my way up to muscles and skin soon. One thing I noticed from the Anatomy for the Artist book, I wish the carpal bones in the hand were more accurately depicted.

New one. I was going to do something like using a blue pencil to sketch in the muscles and a 2B to shade over it, but I tested the idea with Photoshop and didn't turn out well. So I'll just leave it like this.

At this stage in the game, I don't think it's as much about individual crits as seeing a large quantity of good quality work such as you have started :) - it takes hundreds of drawings like these / and life drawings to get really good, and it's impossible to crit each one - the main thing I can do is to encourage you to keep going in this direction since it's a good one - participate as much as you can in the Workshops and also intersperse your anatomy studies with life drawings if possible and master copies either traditionally, digitally, or both. Will be checking in to see your progress, keep up the good work! :)

The lower leg looks a bit too small on that army guy you're working on, and the forearms look a bit too big. But Rebecca's right, if you study anatomy and books like Figure Drawing for all it's worth by Loomis(i'm studying this right now), it'll help you tons.

Heyhey, I apologize if I've mentioned this before, but a book which I think you'd get loads out of is by Anthony Ryder:

Check out what Mu is doing with the book, which he loves:

Mu's Sketchbook (

I think Ryder lays out a very clear and good approach to drawing the figure and to drawing generally. I definitely recommend it! :)

You know I just realized some of the books I have are just art books or anatomy books. I don't really have anything that talks about figure drawing with except for Andrew Loomis and some George Bridgman.

I need to hit a life drawing class. Fortunately I know one I can just sit in.

These anatomy sketches are looking really good, Sirron! And the video of the samurai was curious to watch, i wish more people could do that with their work. The loomis style figures seem to have quite short legs up to the length from top of head to crotch, which should be about half the length of the body, unless you're going for some foreshortening, or slightly less heroic figures! Other than that, I'd say just keep going at it, only leads to good things!

Rebeccak: Yeah, the class is at my community college where I attended/worked. And it's only 15 minutes away! Gotta love that. Hope your class went well.

Zephyri: Thanks! I wish more people would show recordings of their work too. Can you imagine what if we saw artists like Rembrandt or Michelangelo do their paintings? I've learned a great deal from watching other people's openCanvas files. But I don't see a lot of people using that program, so I try my best to just record it some other way so everyone can see it. I hope it has at least one good thing to learn from.

I see what you mean about the shortness of the figures. Unfortunately I wasn't going for foreshortening or less heroic characters :sad: I think the thighs are too short and the spine is a little long.

I just saw your portfolio on ImagineFX. It made my day recognizing you and thinking that you posted on my anatomy thread :)

When I started this my motivation was completely sapped out of me. So I just took some time reading ImagineFX (that's when I saw Zephyri's page). I got some inspiration back so went back at it and just practiced getting the head at the right angle.

And just had some fun drawing a mech.

I think I'm too sketchy... need some more control.

I agree with Zephyri that the piece in post 66 is really lovely.

on the heads...
be careful to not to skew the head when drawing it under an angle. this can be avoided by drawing a cross before adding the facial features. The horizontal bar of the cross represents the browline while the vertical bar of the cross represents the center axis of the face.

I strongly recommend checking out Loomis' book Drawing the head and hands where he explains this elaborately. you can find them as pdf's. I think someone posted a link to them in my thread not too long ago...

It's a great book and his technique is easier to learn (imho) than others. The great thing about it is that one can practice this technique even when he has just a couple of min to spare (like I'm currently doing while being at the office, having to wait a bit while our systems run reports etc. (my office notes are often loaded with loomis heads these days, along with other scribbles, much to my bosses ennoyance :blushes:

It's been about year to a year and a half since I've been in a life drawing class. I forgot how 10 and 15 minute poses felt like haha :)

I walked in last half of the class so I didn't get much. It was good, even saw some friends there. Always good to see my old life drawing teacher.

the top of that last mecha is looking really nice, i think maybe
slimming the legs down and putting just a bit of curve into them would help de-stiffen the pose. I don't know whether you'd be able to see any online, but some of the newer marvel tv shows... evolution i think it was called, had some lovely drawings in the end credits that made me think about what you could get away with in terms of the curve of legs... I wish I could find the reference for you. Maybe try having a look for some marvel characters online, or get a hold of the 'drawing comics the marvel way' if you can, they put a lot of emphasis on the looseness and expression of even still drawings like that one. Whew, novel length post!

I have seen those, just haven't put the time to watch through them.

Top two I looked at Loomis, middle are from my head, bottom are caricatures of people I saw while waiting for my pizza.

Doing this made me want to start my study of Alphonse Mucha. Which would be this one (

Oh yeah, something I kind of thought was cool of Loomis to say was "Now let's get to work in earnest". You don't hear anyone talking that way anymore. It has that good old fashion feel to it... Well I thought it was a nice phrase. :)

I'm kinda surprised I can get this kind of shading with a .5 mechanical pencil. I haven't seen it really done, but what if I drew the model as a skeleton? Hmmm...

Great set of studies from your life drawing class - very dynamic, I particularly think the last one works well because the drawing has an area of focus but the whole drawing is active. Nice work. :)

razz: Yeah it's fun, sometimes I feel like I'm Superman with X-ray vision hahaha! I don't think I should tell my friends I can see their bones, muscles, or through their clothes. ;)

I've been looking through this book ( for some of my bone studies. I'll look at some from Anatomy for the Artist because it has some photos.

One detailed, and 3 quick ones.

Need to figure out how that clavicle works with the scapula. I know it connects with the acromion process, that thing sticking farthest out from the scapula. Well this isn't called a study for nothing :)

SirRon, and it's very great, knowing bones is as important as knowing muscles. What I think sucks about anatomy books is that there's so many of them and it's hard to choose the one that is really great. Yeah, there's some well known and good books by Bridgman, Hogarth, Loomis, some everyone knows, but again chooses between these because as they are about the same subject, they're very different too.
Some decisions to make before seriously studying one or two of those complete guides for artists...
Ok, I don't want to go philosphing here really :D

NR43: Yeah, sometimes I don't like it either. The 'schematic drawings' don't read that well to me. But the other drawings are great. I actually prefer this one ( but it's heavy and a hardcover so it's not easy to carry around.

razz: I think the best way to study bones is to actually have a skeleton instead of a book :) Unfortunately I don't have the money to do that heh.

I'll try to do some 3/4 views now that I have a feeling for the orthographic views.

More skeleton studies...

When I was back go doing the skeletons in the life drawing class I had this nice little sense of confidence when I was drawing the shoulder. Wish I had a view from the back though.

Oh... and pardon the observational notes on one of my pages. I like to jot down ideas on why someone or something looks a certain way. It's so cool to look at someone's shoes and imagine the places they've been to or what their occupation is. I'm weird that way :D

On a side note, check out our unofficial animation challenge. We're voting on best animations at the moment.

Hi Sirron!

The bone studys are very nice... keep at them ... you will see very soon how they help you by understanding the human figure :)

Something to your potraits: Try not to create faces from imagination ... talk to friends or your parents and ask them if you can draw them. You must learn painting potraits by drawing persons from life. This is the best helping methode I think. But you can surely use what you have learned by theory and test it out. ;)
