06-28-2006, 03:22 PM

Welcome aboard! Looking forward to seeing your work! :)

06-29-2006, 05:32 AM

Hey rebecca thanks :applause:
You sure know how to make a fulla feel welcome around here!
I know we're only supposed to post in the main thread when we have five faces but since this is my thread im posting up number one just to gain some momentum.
Should be a good opportunity to experiment with lots of techniques and a bit of speed work.
Quite happy with this for a starting point :)
Tried out a couple texture brushes i aint used before.
Zhuzhu u are a huge inspiriation spent a good hour in your thread last night :)
cool. Next head soon.

06-29-2006, 04:09 PM

That's looking great! :) I did change the rule so that you can post 1 head at a time, so please feel free to post your work in the main thread. :)

Definitely looking forward to following your progress here!

07-01-2006, 05:25 AM

Ok not so happy with this one but throwing it up anyways.
Gotta keep moving or i wont get thru em!
Thanks for your words of encouragement Reb!
You work so hard for us!

07-01-2006, 08:07 PM

No problem! :) Nice to see your new piece, one thing I would recommend is to try to get the full range of values, from white to black, in almost every piece you do. But the trick is to be sparing in the use of light values, as images which use too much white / light values will look washed out. One thing I often do when I've gone too light in values is to add a low opacity layer of black above all of my other layers, and play with the opacity until a get more of a mid gray look. Then I selectively paint above this layer and bring out key points of light. This really does wonders in terms of giving form more of a believable sense of volume.

Hope this helps! :)

Hey heres an update on that old head.
Its a bit halfassed cos i didnt really like the head anyway, but hey at least i tried. ill keep your advice in mind in the future tho.
Cheerz Rebecca :applause:

07-02-2006, 01:26 PM

Ok here's another head ( a cropped in version of an uncompleted image).
Took a completely different approach today - worked in a way I've never worked before.
Partly from looking at zhu zhu's work and wip stills, partly from an inspiring conversation I had with my girlfriend today. I wanted to be more analytical and observe more closely while working. So I consciously painted with hard edged brush no pressure sensitivity. And i painted dabs. Blending with a couple texture brushes after.
I learned lots and even though it's not as good a likeness as I'd like i really enjoyed the process and am pleased with the result at this point.
Might continue with it tomorrow, or later in the week, though if i keep getting more and more detailed, I'll never get through 50 in a month :P

Sorry about duplicate post from the main thread. I'll edit tomorrow, maybe with an update or something.
Right now i deen some sleeep :D

07-02-2006, 05:27 PM

The grayscale is definitely improved (although of course, like all of our work, it can be taken further) :) and I'm really liking the results of your color piece. :) It's great that you are keeping the tones in the relatively mid tone to dark range and not going too light too soon. Nice work!

Cheers, :)

07-05-2006, 02:57 AM
Hey Bro

Looking really good that last colour study is great I really like it. The tones and detail in the face are really well done and I like the different textures in the beard breaking away from the crisp detail around the eyes and face. I really like the way you have done the eyes and nose. I think you do not need to do much more to the whole piece except maybe a little bit more in the jacket (whatever he is wearing) just to get rid of that big blobby brush stuff. But keep it real simple still as the main attention is in his face and eyes.

Hurry up I am waiting to see a lot more from you. Only 47 to go. All of this quality or higher thanks.

CHeers bro keep it up

07-05-2006, 07:42 AM
Haha churs mark! :)
I'll come back to Durer at some point. Like you say i jus wanna do the jacket really. Its pretty massive strokes on there atm. The original had a wider cropping with a hand in there, was thinking of including it all, 47 more heads.....? move on matty!
where were you on tues? we actually made it to lifedrawing! was good too. Fun place to do it. I'll be back there I think.

New head. Tried the Mullins scribble, but never bothered looking at his work before i did this! Silly move. I'll take a look at his stuff before my next one. Falling behind schedule badly too, but as long ss i keep at it i'll get a bunch done :)
This one was fun too. Didnt take too long despite all the scribbling :)

07-06-2006, 07:04 PM

Great to see the range of experimentation here! Looking forward to seeing more pieces. :)

07-13-2006, 11:16 AM

Another study, even though this isnt really head focussed. Was a new approach... again! Inspired by some glorius black and white images on Justin Sweets website i used a hard brush, only painting with black or white, and pressure sensitivity set to size. One brush size (8) and this is the size i worked at. Took a wee while but was quite fun again. I like trying out all these different styles. It must help somehow...

07-13-2006, 12:14 PM

Hehe, jus bein silly inphotoshop now :P

07-16-2006, 09:05 PM

A couple more. did some traditional media studies! haha. So not used to rendering with a pencil! Been on a mad digital jaunt for a while now! hehe was good fun tho. Forces you to keep it a little simple too.

07-17-2006, 09:11 PM

I don't know why, but I can't see any of your images. Can you repost them? :)

07-20-2006, 06:56 AM

knocked this sucker out in just over a half hour, pretty pleased with that.

07-20-2006, 06:58 AM

I dont know why cos i can see this new one...
Ill have a look later on. Gotta run right now.
Thanks for looking in anyways :D

... SHOULD be fixed?
If someone could let me know..?
Thanks yo :arteest:

07-21-2006, 06:03 AM

Ah, I can finally see your images again. :) Great stuff here! I am really struck by the black white pieces but really all of your latest work is appealing ~ looking forward to seeing much more!

Cheers, :)

Fantastic going with this one, Cavematty

Incredible result in the time.

(Can see your images some of the time...)

09-15-2006, 06:52 AM
I had a lot of fun with the heads so im quite excited about this one :)
Ive been drawing from bridgeman a little recently, and been back to lifedrawing classes for the first time in about 3years, so its a good time for this to come up, while my passion is running high.
Anyways, heres #1/50, its a copy of a section of #060

i hope some the guys that inspired me last time will be back (i know zhuzhu will be in right? hehe look forward to it mate ).

09-21-2006, 10:44 PM
a couple more torsos:

been keeping busy with work and been going to life drawing again recently. Might post up a few of my drawings from the classes soon, jus to flesh this sucker out (get it nice and big like zhu zhus thread :P) and maybe even some of the drawings ive been doing from bridgeman? :P
These challenges are always a great motivation though :)

10-06-2006, 12:39 AM
Hey y'all. Been on holiday for a while, so i kinda fell outta the torso's contest. However I did take a Bridgeman and a Hogarth book with me... so its not like ive been doing nothing :P
It was nice to be away from the computer for a bit, but its good to be back too :)
Anywyas I thought id scan in a few of my favourite sketchbook pages and post them up on a regular basis, jus to keep track of my progress.
So here's the first couple :

10-06-2006, 02:49 AM
All of your work is fantastic! Some of the best shading I have seen too. Really like the pegs through the arm to understand the opposing curves.

10-06-2006, 09:29 AM
Hey Womball, thanks heaps for the comments. I must point out though that those are copies of great artitst works from instructional books. The pegs unfortunately weren't my idea :P
But thanks for your kind words nonetheless.
With that kind of response I'll throw some more up tomorrow then maybe ;)

10-06-2006, 11:38 AM
Hi....Matty.... :)

Just had a chance to check out your thread.....GREAT studies....All of them...:applause:
Really looking forward to seeing more of your work...

10-06-2006, 02:06 PM
Very nice sketches, Cavematty. Really enjoyed watching the through. Great to see you at the torso challenge. Just getting started, eh? Looking forward to more torsos from you. And the Hogarth studies are looking good! I likte the bottom one the most, nice sketchy lines in it, good gestures. Would love to see more of that. I always like seeing a gesture drawing and a more worked on figure of that gesture. Somehow they look so nice together :D

10-07-2006, 11:43 AM
Hi Matty!
nice studies!... great work on the heads too!

10-09-2006, 12:59 AM
He y'all, jus a couple more hogarth studies.
thanks for the kind words everyone :) Its really motivating, makes me wanna draw more and more! Which is a really fantastic feeling.
Hey anandpg, thanks for the kind words. I checked ur thread, ive tentatively been trying to learn zbrush lately, and ur work is great. genuinely inspiring.
Its great discovering new threads to keep an eye on by having you guys stop by mine :)
thanks heaps.

10-09-2006, 05:32 AM

Really gud work man.... I you could tell us what tools you used to draw, that will be great :)
Waiting to see more updates from you.... Two thumps up :)

- sivan...

10-10-2006, 01:26 AM
hey guys a couple more pages from lunchtime. Hogarth still. I jus got the dynamic hands book and im really digging his style in it.
One of the arms was posted yest but i drew on the same page so...

sivan - i jus use a 0.5 mech pencil and scan that sucker in. 2B lead tho. soft as u can get. The Bridgemans are done with a 4B cluth pencil, but i only posted up one page of those right? cool.

10-10-2006, 08:02 AM
wow those are really great studies - bravo!

10-10-2006, 08:59 AM
just dropping by to take a quick look before i get off work. :D

thanks for the paintover again by the way. it was a great help. ;)

10-10-2006, 10:42 AM
Hey Matty!!

Cool drawings again.. eager to see your ZBrush work! :bounce:

10-11-2006, 02:37 AM
hey guys. Thanks for the visits :)

Hey thanks intervain. It really makes me wanna keep posting regularly when i know people are stopping in :)
Thats why im posting today even though i only have one page to put up :( i got distracted last night watching dazed and confused - i love that movie. My gf hadnt seen it before.

Salubri3i - ur more than welcome, glad it helped. Yeah 'ur people' get a round haha! and they did treat me well - the first fellow was my best frined for years :) That anatomy book spirit dreamer was talking about in ur thread is the one im mainly drawing from in here, or a different one by the same guy anyway. It is very helpful, though yeah, you dont wanna end up with his style (i find his full figures a bit rubbery for my liking - he loves to exaggerate the cruves, but it really helps to clarify what he is teaching.

anandpg - ill post a zbrush study soon, promise ;)

anyways here's todays measely one page that i promised :P

10-11-2006, 03:11 AM

10-23-2006, 11:31 AM

WOW..your thread is a real pleasure....really like the lighting, and the way you captured it, in that interior...the reflective surface on that table came out great...:applause:
Captured a lot of energy and emotion in that bottom face..
Also like the mood and atmosphere captured in the landscapes...alot captured in these latest
works, with a minimal amount of detail....GREAT...
Forgot to mention the Hogarth studies....FANTASTIC...Will for sure improve any works you creat in the future..:)
Can't wait to see MORE..:)

11-19-2006, 06:31 AM

Hey guys. Long time no update...
Heres a sketch I did today. Was watching Six Feet Under (got out the DVD of season one... I really dont watch TV so its the only way I get to see the shows that everyone says are great... I went in there to get out deadwood http://conceptart.org/forums/images/ca_smilies/normal/smiley_bashful.gif )
This is painted from a pause screen of episode one. I liked the lighting. Took about 3 hours yesterday and a half hour today of tweaking and touching up?
Hope u like. Be updating more regualarly again for a while :)

11-19-2006, 07:10 AM
Hey mate

great sketch, the last one... really like it.
Small crit I have is one that has been pointed out to myself lately (which is why I'm now noticing :) )... the eyeballs seem rather flat and could use a bit more fleshy beige/pink, even though the eyelids are really wellpainted...

Hope you don't mind. It's a lovely sketch!
Keep coming here with more work please :)
