Hey everyone!

I finally finished this matte painting!

And here is a new one that I did , its pretty basic but it was fun :)

06 June 2006, 08:36 AM

I love those scifi images after getting up. Really good sketch in my opinion, I love everything. Composition, colors and lighting are just beautiful :-]

06 June 2006, 09:22 AM
I like it, but compositionally to me its a little right heavy. I look foward to seeing the progress of it though.

06 June 2006, 11:04 AM
hey thanks for the comments!

Here is an update , started my own painted background and started adding and getting rid of some stuff, almost at the final composition before I up rez and start detailing , any crits are very welcome!

06 June 2006, 05:21 PM
Getting rid of the photo sky was good, it was waaay too grainy.

06 June 2006, 06:35 PM
hey great ones here, very nice mood, I liked the first one better , the sky gave a very photoreal look for all the image, the aerial perspective in that one in that one is really cool , it's too bad the sky bitmap was too grainy.
I like the second one but I think if you try a 16:9 frame composition it will help you in adding elements for a much better image composition, it is too square to me, try working as it was a frame from a movie, a wider frame will let you think in new ideas for composition

06 June 2006, 09:02 AM
Hey Jaime thanks for the crits , haha you know i didnt even notice how square it was! lol I think it made a huge improvement changing that up

So I was playing around more with the painting , im trying a lot of different things here before I start a final, but I do agree with you about the first one looking better , it had a real mild look to it.

But anyways here are a couple updates , and thanks for the help and keep the crits coming :)

06 June 2006, 09:54 AM
did another concept up quick , hmmm i dunno where im going with this now lol

06 June 2006, 02:51 PM
Hey everyone

I decided i should keep practicing before i go and actually start to do a full on matte painting so i will keep posting up my basic ideas for now :)

Here is one i did this morning

06 June 2006, 10:02 PM
matellis , I think for your new matte painting concept, you have a great photo to start with, and you have all that detail hidden in the final result, I think the fog is too white and without depth, it is as white near and far the camera.and I think for the buildings or city you have in the background that would be as high and tall that clouds would be all over them , hope this helps

06 June 2006, 09:48 AM
Hey thanks for the help jaime and everyone , its really coming in useful :)

I just finished a sketch yesterday that I am happy about to go and start a matte painting. The idea is that its a saturday night and the city is rocking , maybe its a holiday that call for big celebration.

So I also started working on the matte yesterday , getting all the placement of the building started and once i get all the building I am happy with i will start tweeking the perspective on then start painting in detail and work on the color correction. here is what i have so far

Original sketch:

ok your last one is starting to look a lot better. Good job on setting up the perspective.
Might i recommend starting out with a hard brush and getting most of it set up, then when you are finalizing it and blending it all together, soften the brush slightly, down to 60-70% to file down those sharp edges and blend your strokes.

About your perspective, might i sugges you bring the right V.P. far more to the right, even out of the plate, as right now its making your buildings very skewed.

Keep it up

EDIT: i just noticed something wierd. You seem to have 3 VP's on the horizon. Is that intentional?

Hey sorry , I dont really know what you mean , are you talking about the matte painting or the sketch? and what areas , im confused. I havent started painting on the matte yet, right now my main focus is covering up the original sketch with photos , then i will go in and start correcting and adding extra stuff by painting. the matte is over 4000 pixels wide so im finding it hard to get good photos of high quality atm. so i have a feeling im going to be doing a lot of paint over.

Oh yeah there are actually about 10-12 VPs on the horizon , most are out side of the convas, i dont have all the buildings parallel to each other so only a few buildings share the same points.

06 June 2006, 01:18 PM
I'm referring to both pictures in your last post. I see what you mean about the photo bits in the last image. The first image in that post has a lot of blurry strokes, from a soft brush.

Regarding the perspective, dunno, maybe its ok to have that many VP's, but seems to look wrong to me. I'm not a pro though.
The main buildings that are skewed are the ones in the background in the last image. They have a right VP in the center of the page almost. This makes them very skewed.

started playing around today with a new matte , im still just practicing stuff so none are finished but i will finish the one for the challenge:)
this is about 10-12 images , and about 4-6 hours of over painting

07 July 2006, 07:43 PM
hey everyone , just posting an update , i got rid of the foreground i had. now im starting to add detail.

07 July 2006, 09:53 PM
Very cool image.
But compositionaly confusing.
Try some piece of rock in the right bottom corner.

Besides it looks great.

07 July 2006, 03:15 PM
hey everyone , just did a bit more work to this , warmed it up a lot and going heavy into detailing the rocks/mountians. Im going to not touch the building anymore until i make some concepts for how they will really look. And i flipped the image to get an idea i the composition works well.
any crits would great :)

Hello Matellis, i like a lot you works :D
Can you tell me what tools you have? Wacom tablets?
Keep you nice work friend, I really like to see your matte paintings :)

PS: And good luck in the challenge:thumbsup:

07 July 2006, 04:45 PM
Amarildo: hey thanks for the comment , I dont have anything really special that i use , pretty standard computer thou i did just buy a wide screen monitor 2 months ago and gave it 2 gigs of ram and i have a tablet but its not a wacom :( just some cheap one i got at future shop for 80$.

heres an update

I started adding more detail to some of the building and more atmosphere. Also I am playing around with some clouds.

Here are the photos that I used , I made a very basic sketch of what I wanted to do then i found these pics to get me started, but they are almost all painted over now so I am worried that its losing a realistic look.

07 July 2006, 09:14 PM
Hey everyone , just started detailing some more , adding some clouds and refining the buildings to the shape i want , everything is still very loose and needs some heavy detail tweeking but that will have to come tomorrow , time to get started on more Atlantis sketches!!

07 July 2006, 10:48 AM
hey this looks really promising! now where do you find the time to do this and the atlantis contest?

07 July 2006, 08:17 PM
Ismini: thanks haha and i dont have a job right now so i have all the time in the world :)

So I have been working on this a bit more , detailed a lot of the background, changed the sky and now I am working elements into the foreground as well starting some paint over with them. I don't know if I will make the city in 3d or just paint it so I havent really put much into it, mainly what i have there is just for placement. Any crits would be great :)

And here are some close ups of the background. You will see that i started adding structures, a bridge going across the river and some roads. Also here is a close up of the mountian that I am working on for it. Still lots of tweeking to do thou.

07 July 2006, 11:50 PM
That's just great, Matt!
Very paint-like yet photoreal.
I like the colors and mood. The mountain in the background is awesome.
I like the composition better too.

For the buildings, I would recomend you to use photoreference of buildings of big cities.
See some Dylan Cole's mattepaintings, and you'll see, it's great.

Great work

Hi Matt, nice to see you.

You are getting better! The matte paintings are very good. I like the rocks on the right bottom of the snow mountains one.
Your concepts looks nice too. I would suggest increasing contrast in the last one.

good work:thumbsup:

11 November 2006, 06:43 PM

Hey thanks for the replies everyone, and yes I am alive haha I just havent had the internet since july , I miss it! ahhh hopefully I will have it sometime soon thou ;)
I am glad you like my concepts and mattes! I will start working on some new ones today and I submitted the crater matte to the final gallery :) thanks for the kind words and I hope to have some new concepts soon:)

11 November 2006, 09:25 AM
Nice work. I really like some of your stuff, how do you pick your colours for the mountain ranges do you use photo reference or just make it up on your palette?

11 November 2006, 02:57 PM
Hey thanks for the words Richard , I come up with my own color palette pretty much, I usually lay down a gradient first then do some ine art and then try and find pics that have almost the same as what im looking for or just change it up with curves in photoshop. Here are the references that I used for the crater painting , i changed most of them. First i would skew them so they didnt quite look like the original picture and then use curves to get the colors right , then i would paint in new detail over top. Im still learning a lot everyday that I open up photoshop and painter but its fun :)

11 November 2006, 04:46 PM
Hey Mat, thanks for the swift reply, i think what lets me down is i dont do enough reference material, did some doodling and i think the gradient idea is good. I hope to see some more of your work.I have been playing around with a crater matte of my own, the ideas are there it is just the colours letting me down. I also have a prediliction for detail, looking at other mattes that have been used in film and television the brush work is rough and painterly. So I am still learning. The hard part is having a photographers eye, I can proof read a contact sheet in seconds so I am pretty hard on my self when it comes to my paintings.

Regards Rich

Hope it isnt too cold where you are!

11 November 2006, 08:18 AM
nice work here!!
someone even looks like realone

11 November 2006, 06:06 PM
Thanks Fryrice :)

No worries Richard, and I know what you mean. References are very important and I didnt realize it until about a year ago. I think reference material has improved my work a huge amount. I look back at the stuff i did and think wtf was i thinking then! And it is always good to be hard on yourself. You are your own worst critic. I still have a lot to learn myself. I really find it hard to keep things simple for some reason too. Also posting on this site has helped me a lot. There are so many great artists willing to give you there time to help you improve.

And here is a concept that I started yesterday that is close to being finished :)

Thanks for the comments everyone and any crits would be great!

11 November 2006, 06:21 PM
The new one looks very good!:)

11 November 2006, 09:43 AM
That a nice idea, you have a strong colour range and the setting very organic. If you look at a beetle the irridescent colours that reflect of it shell remind me of this painting, very off worldly and interesting.

I look forward to seeing more of your work,

Regards Rich.

11 November 2006, 10:41 AM
"And here is a concept that I started yesterday that is close to being finished"

Beautifull colors and concept i like that :p .

Very nice reference, where do you find they lol .

01 January 2007, 03:18 AM
nice work Matt..those sci-fi scenes are looking great, really nice use of color:thumbsup:

01 January 2007, 07:46 PM
Hey everyone and thanks for the kind words.

I finally have the internet again! it took a while but its all good now. I havent painted much in the last month or so , just practicing making custom brushes and mixing colors etc. I do have one concept here that i started but I wasnt feeling it so I decided to not finish it but I will show it anyways :) I think I will redo it because i do like the fall colors and its something that is new to me to paint.

01 January 2007, 08:39 PM
great sketch matt ...
how about putting some mountains into the background ???

01 January 2007, 05:26 PM
this latest looks interesting.. impressive start..

01 January 2007, 05:14 AM
haha I was thinking about mountians but i wanted something different so i just put a lot of haze and so hills but i dont thin the hills are noticable in that version.

Here is a matte I started two nights ago. Its going to be an alien light house on a very unearth like ocean. Still in a very wip phase. Also I think i will change the bright sunlight , I do want a high contrast at my focal point but I think i will do that instead with a green light coming from the light house and not the sun, but here is the progress so far.

01 January 2007, 12:45 PM
nice colours in the last one... mystic..heh
i love the concept of your previous one! keep it up!

01 January 2007, 03:01 PM
Hey thanks for the reply :)

Just a little update here , just started adding in some more photos after finishing the final concept , still lots to do to the photos i added , they still are not fitting the scene good , but yeah I thought I would post what I have so far anyways , any crits?? :)

01 January 2007, 05:47 PM
hey matt, good progress sofar. You nned to add mroe details on the rocks on the left side. Can see your brusshstrokes

01 January 2007, 08:23 PM
Hey Matt!
The last one is looking AWESOME. Amazing.

Keep it up.

01 January 2007, 02:35 PM
Hey levi , yeah im still in the middle of adding pics and much of the sketch is still showing but it is slowly getting filled in , im working 7 days a week right now so its a bit hard to get the time together to get a lot done but thanks for the crit dude!

Thanks Pavel :) I hope i dont mess the rest of it up , i have a bad habit of doing that , soon i will post my references that im using.

Just remember that I didnt share the idea i had for this. So the idea is that this is an alien planet and thats not an ocean made of water but rather a heavy gas. The rocks are not orange rather a dark grey but the moon is made of some kind of orange rock so the sun light off the moon refects a heavey orange all over the world. So then they created ships to float to this gas ( just i have to design one i think). So they need light houses and the best color they could think of that could be visible is green. and yeah thats pretty much it for the idea.
