View Full Version : Car Shortmovie

Hi all,

This is the first thread I start on Cgtalk, so here are some Infos about who I am:

My name is "Roman", but my friends call me "Rom".
I guess my passion for cars started before I was able to walk, that's about 19 years ago now.
I was born in Germany on april the 25th 1986.
Today I live in the french speaking part of Switzerland, near "lausanne" to be exact.
I started 3D by creating maps for Half-Life and Unreal Tournament, just for fun (that was in 2003).
In July 2003 I started to work with the Cinema 4D XL7 Demo, and got addicted to it.
Since then I kept on working on 3D projects (mainly cars, buildings, and technical stuff) in my sparetime.
I use Cinema 4D R9, Paint Shop Pro 8, and Adobe Premiere 7
I'm a big Porsche addict, and my dream is to get to work for them as a designer, one day :D

if you wanna see some of my previous work, here are some links:

My Topic on (

Now let's get to the serious things... :D

This is a project I've been working on for quite a while now, and I really want to achieve this by the end of this year (autumn if possible).

I'm talking about a short film of about 5 to 10 minits, that shows cars driving around very Fast, and tells a little story about the drivers.

Here are some keys on what I'm aiming at:
- At least 5 highly detailed cars (~400'000 polys each)
- High Definition 720P
- 5.1 Sound
- Realistic but not photorealistic, it should look a bit flashing (exagerated)
- Dayshots and Nightshots
- Some nice electro music from Prodigy, Amon Tobin, and others...
- Realistic physics and performances
- High resolution textures, home made
- Simple lightning, no radiosity
- Inspired by the Gran Turismo 1 opening video

the cars will be:
- Mitsubishi Lancer Evo VI
- Mazda RX-7 RS
- Toyota Supra 2JZ
- ***
- ***

this is a little preview of what it's gonna look like :

I hope you'r going to like this thread, and this movie,

thanks allready for your feedback and support,

here are some snapshots of the opening scene of the Gran Turismo 1 intro:

I really like this intro, and I it will be my main inspiration for my short.

paint shop pro:

what do you think?

07 July 2006, 06:30 PM
what do you think of this filter?

(click for HD 720P preview)

07 July 2006, 08:25 PM

now that's a real stuff, i love it, nice models and the smoke camed out great,
but i got a question how dit you animated it ??

keep up the good work

sory for my english :D

07 July 2006, 10:24 PM

thank you :)

how I animated the car or the smoke?
about the smoke, it's quiet simple, you just set up the emitters correctly and they'll do their job. Nothing special there.

about the car, well I used some home made Expresso formulas for the wheels, and animated the movement with keyframes.

final Result for the filter tests:
allmost a genuine Cinema 4D render, just added some Blur with Paint Shop Pro.

render time: 1minit 22 sec :p

07 July 2006, 05:46 PM
Hi Rom all renders are great and i don't see big difference between them while i'm sorry to say this i liked the first one the most it is more realistic and has good exposure.

come on show us more work and less rush.:)

07 July 2006, 09:16 AM
some bits of a High res render:

07 July 2006, 05:58 PM
update on the Supra:

still a lot of work to do...

07 July 2006, 12:51 AM
Nice work, i'm very impresed. Very, very impressed by your initiative. Nothing to comment on the amount of details or about the renderings. Still shots differ from moving ones so there must be rendered using different techniques.

I'm curious about one thing. How do you plan to make 5.1 sound for all the shots. What software do you intend to use? Do you have a storyboard allready? Or you plan to change the hole "story" ass you progress with modeling and rendering?

hi milkey :)

thank you for your comment ;)

about the 5.1 , I use Cinema 4D and Adobe Premiere, I'll render the sounds with C4D, and then match the 6 channels with premiere. about the storyboard, I'm still working on it ;).

bro, i just started to see ur thread and its really awsome, i tip my hat to u. Now I just wanted to talk about that take off on the Supra. The first shot was way too fast, just seem like it jumped into 90 MPH without even spinning the tires. What i would recommand is the rocking that u did beofre the car took off, u do that a bit more and then when it takes off a bit of in place burning out with the tail spinning a bit to the side and then catching traction and off to the race. Now this probably gonna add some more smoke trail around the car. Now for that smoke trail, its going out from the sides a bit too soon, it should build up in the hull of the wheel exiting from the back before it starts to come out from the sides from over build up of the smoke. This may seem alot but i seen my friends burnout there cars and especially there supra's enough to know a bit from how it should look. Now, im not the true techy of the engine but i know if that super twin turbo sounds as powerful as it may be then the burnout should really pull that tail out when its taking off. One of the down fall to all that power in a supra major lost of traction on take off and turns. But I may be wrong so i suggest looking out video games such as Need for Speed: Most Wanted and if u get a chance and now a place go watch the rael thing happen.

BEST OF LUCK:thumbsup:

thanks a lot man, I'll be working on this animation stuff, and your comments will be helpful.

11 November 2006, 04:56 AM
Looks freaking awesome man, and by the way i wanted to know what are u using to render u images, they look really nice???

12 December 2006, 03:35 PM
thanks a lot :)

Is use Cinema 4D R9, (no radiosity).

here is an update, I decided to remodel the body of the car, and started my own Bodykit:

I'm trying to make a JGTC type Body kit for the road, and used an image made by "Dangeruss" as inspiration:

12 December 2006, 06:36 PM
I'm working on the wheels

01 January 2007, 04:46 PM
new render of the Evo:

03 March 2007, 04:16 PM
I made new rims for the Supra, 5 Zigen Hyper 5zr:

03 March 2007, 04:19 PM
wow looks nice...keep it up'

03 March 2007, 03:24 PM
looks amazing mate.
will be keeping an eye on this.

i think it has been said before, but i think there is too much traction when the supra pulls off. the wheels should spin more, and probably continue spinnin when changin into second if theres plenty of power. the traction should get stronger slowly as well.

hope this helps

03 March 2007, 01:58 AM
thanks guys :)

some new renders of the Evo:

Hey Rom, amazing work!

Du kommst aus Deutschland? Sprichst du denn noch deutsch und hättest vielleicht Lust etwas über ICQ zu labern? :D

05 May 2007, 02:56 PM
hi Milchschaumschluerfer, yes I was born in germany and I do speak german.

Made a new hood, and added stickers and stuff to the Evo.

Hi, I edited the posts, I've had some troubles with my server, sorry for that!

here is some new stuff: ( (

01 January 2008, 04:36 PM
wow!! you got your talent, you got your hobby, and you got your fans!
really amazing job!

I wanna ask you somethin', do you manage to render it all at once or you do some render pass and compose it??
Are you gonna make your movie with this hi-quality model, texture and lighting?? if so, how you gonna pull this off?? do you have some render farm or something?? cos I guess it's gonna take a time for each single frame to render..

I like your last rim shot, very cool! I like the yellowish tone color from the last 2 update.

Keep it up good, mate!
Can't wait to watch your movie!

Cheers!
