The rock gator would bury itself in the earth and wait patiently for it's unsuspecting prey to walk over it's mossy vegetated back ...

looks great so far...good idea!

It is uncertain if the race of sapling fairies still survive in the realm of Middle Earth. Their hatred and mistrust of all races other than their own sent them into seclusion eons ago. If any have survived it would be near impossible to spot one. Their skills at cameoflage are only surpassed by their cunning and deceptive magics.

From the look of the drawing I figure that you have meet my mother-in-laws dog :D
I sleep with my bedroom door locked, afraid that "it" will make it in to my lair and like an anteater, try to find some ants up my nose with her cold slimy tongue. :D

01-11-2003, 08:35 PM
Does Tommy know about your ant infestation?
Hehehehe j/k Alice, you know I have a warped sense of humor.

Anyhoo ... this is all that I have for now. You'll notice that I'm leaning towards some sort of creature design that has a natural and vegetated appearance. This I suppose is a result of my unfinished 1st WIP Challenge entry (Enchanted Forest ( I'm going to try something similar again just because I like the textures. Hopefully it'll be different enough so that it's not a repeat of the previous attempt.

I love her ants!!!!! Even they are in my it?:D

01-11-2003, 10:14 PM
Oh thats it! Ill never propose to someone on a forum again :p

Speaking of Ants, that is a hole in the character setup to be filled, the little creatures, the spiders and moscitos and bugs in general.

Hey Kirt! ;) the rock gator is great! i love it! i already have something to model for the 3d challenge, otherwise i would have asked you if you could lend me this concept. At the moment im trying to draw my own idea, but i doubt it wont have the same quality as your drawings.

I went a little crazy with the fairy today. I was just going to concept it out a bit so I had more than a head shot. Next thing I know I'm adding in plants and finishing up this sketch. So, unless I come up with something better next week, this is going to be what I color.

01-13-2003, 07:36 AM
I absolutely like it. Yes i do.
I dig the pose, the expression, the plant to show the scale, everything. Color it

Update coming in a day or two. I don't work as fast as Tommy and I'm spreading my time between 2 other WIPs (see signature). Thanks for the feedback ... I'm going to go with the fairy for sure.

Kirt its not right, posting sweet art work then "putting it on hold" comon thats not right! :p

01-17-2003, 02:27 AM
Yeah I know ... I'm spreading myself pretty thin lately. I'm going to have to cut out some extra activities so that I can concentrate more on my art and this community. :D

I love this place and the people who visit here. Such helpful, kind and generous folks. :applause:

01-19-2003, 09:52 PM

01-20-2003, 12:56 AM
The natives are restless ...
Here's the update. I'm working a blue/green pallette and I'll have some accent color in here somehow or other. Maybe some ladybugs on the underside of the leaves?

Check ( for the larger version

01-20-2003, 01:33 AM
Looking very sweet Kirt.

01-20-2003, 04:45 AM
CGFreak - He's supposed to look mad. He has an extreme hatred for all other races ... and unless the viewer is a sapling fairy, which I'm assuming you are not, he'd look at you that way. :D

Here's a bit more for today ...

01-20-2003, 09:47 AM
Thats looking awesome Kirt. Your style and coloring is awesome.

01-24-2003, 03:28 PM
I hope you get a chance to update this weekend Kirt. Looks good so far. You better finish this one a day early!

01-28-2003, 12:25 AM
Looking solid Kirt keep on progressing, I'm anxious to see what kind of mood you will go for with the background :)

02-12-2003, 07:06 AM
OMG! I was on page 2 ... I better get back to work on this. :D

02-12-2003, 07:09 PM
you should be ashamed. :shame:

02-12-2003, 07:20 PM
Hi Kirt. A very cool character you've got there! I like your drawing style and the way you're colorizing your drawings and I wanna see it finished as soon as possible! :D oups, I'm beeing selfish...
Anyway, well done and keep going!

02-16-2003, 09:11 AM
still no update kirt?!... ;) :bounce: :buttrock:
you are not going to finish it? ... it's 16 of february :deal:

02-16-2003, 09:21 AM
I'm going to do my best to finish it this week so I don't have to worry about it at the end (again). Yeesh ... I start too many things at one time. :D

02-18-2003, 11:18 PM
Really like the way the wings tuned out!
cool, but not fairy-like.

02-19-2003, 05:49 AM
It looks like a fairy to me. Have you ever seen this book?

Lots of good (and bad) fairies in here.

02-19-2003, 01:27 PM
I was talking about them wings ;)

02-19-2003, 05:23 PM
dmcgrath - Yes, I have seen that book and it's one that is on my "to get" list. Great illustrations in that book that inspire.

Alice - Hmmm ... I've seen illustrations of fairies that have many different types of wings (butterfly, dragonfly, bat, aphid, etc). I suppose if you take any pair of wings and slap them onto the back of a miniature anthropomorphic creature you can call it a 'fairy'. :D

I know ... not very original for me. This has turned out to be one of my less inspired challenge entries. Bleah! But it's too late now to do something new.

02-24-2003, 10:17 AM
Latest update ... finally finished the fairy. Now I just have to finish up the plants. Then I'll touch up any last details and I'll be done with this one.

Here's the large version (

02-24-2003, 02:20 PM
Looking good there Kirt, maybe you should try and push the contrasts a bit.
Keep it up

02-24-2003, 06:46 PM
It looks excellent Kirt. I especially love how you rendered the wings...they look translucent:love: No crits here...can't wait to see it finished:D

02-25-2003, 10:51 AM
Fantastic, if you're going to finish those plants, then no crits here.
I really like this one. I'm waiting for the final...

02-25-2003, 01:22 PM
I like it with the vague background, kinda draws the attention to the fairy instead.

02-26-2003, 07:59 PM
Almost done ...

Large version is on (

02-26-2003, 08:42 PM
Wonderful Kirt.
I have to say this is my favorite.

Good luck

02-27-2003, 12:01 AM
Excellent, the contrasts did a good job on bringing the picture out..Nice details, If I could chose Id give it a nice sunlight lighting from the top right which I think would bring the character forward even more, but since I'm not, I'll only offer it as a suggestion :)

Like it alot :bounce:

02-27-2003, 10:48 PM
Final image - I did very minor adjustments to the previous image. Added the 3rd ladybug (because things are better in threes), did some adjustments to contrast and hue in certain areas so that the fairy pops a little more, and did a little clean-up/minor detail on the background plants. I could tweek this indefinately, so I decided to quit while it was at a point that I liked. :D

Now I start waiting for the next challenge. Good Luck to All!

02-27-2003, 10:58 PM
AWESOME! :D   :applause:

02-28-2003, 03:22 AM
Like the pic, Kirt. Haha - took me a while to find the ladybug crawling on the leaf in the right of the background.:bounce:

02-28-2003, 11:44 AM
Superbe!
